Site Update

Post by Shirley »

Hey Frogs. At some point tonight, I'm going to try to update the board to the latest version of phpbb. We should always be up to date for security reasons, but we are actually way behind again.

I'm not sure exactly when I'm going to get to this or exactly how long it will take, but things are usually pretty quiet at night on the west coast anyway.

Wish me luck! (yes, I will back it up first)

I figured out how to do what I needed, but I'm out of time for tonight. I had forgotten just how screwy the directory structure of this site is. Night, frogs.

Aaaand we're back! It worked this time. We are officially up to date with phpbb.

The one thing that's different is that it didn't bring across a couple of the old styles. I'm not sure which style I was using before, but it's not this one. I think I had a green one with avatars on the left, but I don't remember what it was called. I can install a few other styles if folks want. Or should I just leave it like this?

27 minutes. Not bad, not bad.

I'd prefer a green style like the one I was using, but that is so not a big deal, don't bother unless other folks ask.

Well, I figured I'd (re)learn how to add styles. I'm trying with one now. Not sure if it's the nice green one though.

Ah, that's better. subsilver2. Maybe I just like this one better because I'm used to it. You know, what I'm gonna make this the default one for everyone. If folks prefer the blue one with the avatars on the right, just switch to prosilver.

Ohhhhh, the prosilver style, which is the default style for the latest version, DOES reformat itself for mobile. That's nice. Hmmm, I may have to rethink which style I choose as my default.

I wonder if there's a way to keep the mobile version that I like (prosilver?), and switch to the way the older version looked on a PC? I'll have to do some experimenting.

Question for people who are responding to this thread this morning--when you go to the reply page, does it direct you to the top corner of my spreadsheet (instead of the actual reply window)? I'm thinking not, since you don't have edit rights to the spreadsheet. (Also, confirm that you in fact can't edit the spreadsheet.)

Also, are you directed to the top corner of the spreadsheet whenever you navigate to this thread?

Yes, it seems like it "jumps" sometimes to the spreadsheet.

By the way, since the update the site now loads neatly and at a readable size on my mobile, instead of the millimeter-high text like before, so that's pretty sweet.

I don't know how to fix that. I guess it is just an annoyance that will come up every time there is an embedded Google sheet.

Hey, I got the profiles switched back to the left side. That was the part of this style that was bugging me the most. I can live with the colors, but having the avatars on the right is just wrong.

Any other issues?

Of course, this is incorrect. Fortunately, in service to the 'different strokes' approach to life, this is optional.

I can't edit it.

Be careful when you reply to a thread that has your spreadsheet in it, it seems to default to editing Cell A1 in the spreadsheet rather than the Swamp reply window.

Clicking on a link goes to the linked site in the same tab, rather than opening a new tab. Is this something that can be changed? Prior to the modification, links opened in new tabs.

Anyway we can make the media tags still work for youtube videos? Not so much for old guys like howard who are set in their ways, but for backwards compatibility (check out the Random Videos thread, for instance).
