1 Killed in Shooting at Virginia Beach Municipal Center, Officials Say
At least 11 people were killed and six others injured in a shooting at a municipal center in Virginia Beach on Friday afternoon, the police said.

Chief James Cervera said the gunman, who was a current city employee, was dead but it was not clear how he died.

“This is the most devastating day in the history of Virginia Beach,” Mayor Robert M. Dyer said at an evening news conference.

One of those injured was a police officer, who was saved by his bulletproof vest, Chief Cervera said.
Amazing that 11 killed is barely a blip on the radar these days.

From the Post:
City Councilman Aaron R. Rouse Tweeted, “Pray for our City!” He later said, “This day will not define Virginia Beach. . .We will come together.”

Gov. Ralph Northam, who came to the scene, called it “a horrific day for Virginia.”

“Our thoughts are with the victims and their families,” Northam said.

For what they need? How about more restrictive gun laws 10 years ago, that's what they need.

Thoughts and prayers.

It's totally not a situation I secretly hope for, nosiree. But darn the situation!

Gun to my head, I'd say this is a much better own of the libs than what Gavin McInnes did.

Except that the gun folks will just say this is more proof that the world is super dangerous and we need more guns to protect us from all the guns.

You know the thing where people see your daughter and they decide that a funny thing to say is "You better get a gun."

Can someone explain to me like a 5 year old what the joke is there? Is it that they think my daughter is attractive and therefore more likely to be raped or something but less likely if I have a gun? Or do I need the gun to kill the rapist? It's definitely something rapey, right? It's always in the context of the way she looks.

"Everyone is going to want to fuck your grade schooler pretty soon so you'd better be prepared to murder them" is timeless, dude.

(But no, its not just rape, its also consensual, which girl/women aren't really equipped to decide for themselves as long as they still have fathers!)

I guess the less rapey take would be them saying "there will be a lot of suitors for her hand and you are gonna want to shoo them away", I guess.

I think it's more a play on the old "be cleaning the shotgun when a boy comes to pick her up for a date" thing than "SHE GON' GET RAPED!"

But I have always thought it's creepy for men to comment on the looks of friend's daughters.

Its also weird when moms do it because the inverse is "your daughter profiles to be kinda ugly so you're safe".

Jesus...people worried about my daughter having consensual sex is almost even more fucked up. I'm just going to pass it off as people not thinking about what they're saying because anything else leads to irredeemably creepy.

So, my daughter has acquired a boyfriend now, away at college. So, I’ve heard that gun joke several times now, from people we’ve told. Not sure how to react except to chuckle along with them.

I guess it means, “you better not be an asshole to her or else I will fuck you up.” Which, I guess, speaks to to the protective father instinct. So I get that. (Although I certainly don’t plan on threatening some poor kid.)

It may be a gross, misogynistic and backwards joke, but it gets you elected Governor of Georgia! Or maybe Brian Kemp being the Secretary of State overseeing his own gubernatorial race and blatantly cheating got him elected. Either way, fuck Georgia.

Not the Onion:

I wish the gay community were more accepting of gun supporters. I should know.

(Even the headline is messed up)

An Op-Ed from the Social Media Manager of the NRA. It's an interesting read.
Why is a community that prides itself on inclusion and tolerance so intolerant toward the Second Amendment, the NRA and those who believe in the right to self-defense?

I fear that the gay community has so aligned itself with an anti-gun political party that it has become unable to see beyond party lines. This is not a time for ideologues. The fight is not over. We must be nimble, inclusive and open to new ideas. And before we can fully be all of those things, we must feel empowered to keep ourselves safe.

In a sense, the NRA is right that there is no reason why being gay should lead to a particular opposition to gun rights.

But it's the NRA's own fault for choosing to be the big face of right-wing extremism.

Harvard Rescinds Admission for Parkland Student Over Offensive Comments
A recent graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., who became a gun rights activist in the wake of the deadly shooting that killed 17 people last year, said on Monday that Harvard College rescinded its admission offer over racist and offensive remarks he made as a 16-year-old student.

The graduate, Kyle Kashuv, 18, announced Harvard’s decision on Twitter, posting letters he received from the college — first asking him to explain the comments, and then informing him that it would no longer accept him, citing its serious consideration of “the qualities of maturity and moral character.”
And now of course the entire Conservative echo chamber is decrying this as 'liberal bias' and claiming victim status.

Maybe they should pick themselves up by their bootstraps and have their rich fathers buy their way into Harvard like it should be.

Or maybe they should shut their stupid racist mouths. I'm sure his soon to be scholarship from Liberty University will serve him well in the future.

"In a sense" bullshit. All groups who are systematically oppressed should oppose means of repression.

If only the German's had a word for this feeling...

N.R.A. Shuts Down Production of NRATV
The National Rifle Association has shut down production at NRATV.

The N.R.A. on Tuesday also severed all business with its estranged advertising firm, Ackerman McQueen, which operates NRATV, the N.R.A.’s live broadcasting media arm, according to interviews and documents reviewed by The New York Times.

While NRATV may continue to air past content, its live broadcasting will end and its on-air personalities — Ackerman employees including Dana Loesch — will no longer be the public faces of the N.R.A. It remained unclear whether the N.R.A. might try to hire some of those employees, but there was no indication it was negotiating to do so.
