If, as reported, they "forgot" to run this all by the Army unit and the Div II school, then I stand by my "oops".

Smarter now to pick a new name everyone doesn't hate and make even more on the presales.

Vacations because then people who are there on vacation will think about watching hockey.

It is not like the logo wasn't familiar either (short lived National Lacrosse League team)

Does anyone else remember the Jacksonville Jaguars' original logo that they had to change because it was too similar to the car company?

wikipedia wrote:The day after the NFL awarded the expansion team to Jacksonville, a triumphant Wayne Weaver held up the Jaguars' proposed silver helmet and teal jersey at the NFL owners' meeting in Chicago. The team's colors were to be teal, gold, and silver with black accents. However, this jersey and helmet design, with a gold leaping jaguar, created controversy. Ford Motor Company, then-parent of the automaker Jaguar, believed that the Jaguars' logo bore too much resemblance to the automaker's logo. Though no lawsuit was brought to trial, lawyers from the team and the automaker negotiated an ultimately amicable agreement whereby Jaguar would be named the official car of the Jaguars, and the Jaguars would redesign their uniforms.

I have to be honest...I forgot that team existed until I googled the Vegas NHL logo and it came up.

This is the NHL. They'll drag it out, end up in court, bankrupt St. Rose and end up having an expansion draft featuring a team with a temporary logo.

Knights sign their first player.

Will be a surprise if he ever skates a shift in the NHL for VGK but still a noteworthy milestone.

Chicago Wolves to be VGK's likely AHL affiliate.

Kind of surprising if so since the Wolves have always been independent, but short of starting a new AHL franchise from scratch somewhere this makes a lot of sense. Despite the distance, pretty easy to get players between Chicago and Las Vegas with something like 10-15 nonstops a day between the two cities.

Hm. There's an ECHL franchise here in SLC, only six hours up the road. It would be pretty easy to upgrade them to the AHL.

Yeah, that was my guess initially when Vegas was awarded a team, but NHL/AHL affiliations are weird and not the same as MLB/AAA as far as being 1 for 1 though the trend lately is to have a dedicated AHL affiliate which the NHL team essentially helps staff and operate.

AHL apparently has no taste for expanding though.

Yeah, I'm surprised that Vegas didn't follow the lead of the three California teams, who've all moved their AHL teams westward, close to the parents. But, whatever. For years, the Sharks' affiliate was in Massachusetts and the Kings' was in New Hampshire. Chicago to Vegas is a really easy trip in comparison to those.

VGK announce local radio partners, which isn't really too exciting for y'all, but one interesting takeaway is that all 82 games will be available on a local Spanish-language radio station, making Las Vegas the only NHL team to broadcast all 82 games in Spanish.

This is only cool if the Spanish Announcers table is by the ice and players get slammed through it on a regular basis

It's reportedly Gerard Gallant.

ETA: strikethru reportedly. VGK just dropped a press release announcing it.

Everything I've read says this is a great choice from a hockey perspective. Less so from a PR/media standpoint, as Gallant is said not to be a smooth media-friendly type guy.

Strangely, that should work here. I don't think this is going to be a market like Toronto, Montreal or even Detroit/Chicago where there's a lot of coverage in the local media (nor will fans here seek out coverage in the local media). I could be wrong, but I fully expect the papers in town and the media to more or less not even cover the Knights. Don't get me wrong, they'll have beat writers in the papers and the whole nine yards, but the newspapers in this town suck anyway, so...

NHL announces they're going to combine the NHL Awards Show and Expansion Draft reveal into one event. Pretty smart. Wednesday, 6/21 at T-Mobile Arena.

Tickets go on sale in advance to VGK season ticket holders, but I'll be in San Diego that weekend unfortunately otherwise I'd probably consider it. Supposedly upper bowl tickets will be $20-$40.

I won't be there, but if I was in Las Vegas at the time, I'd certainly attend.

That's pretty awesome. I could actually go to that if I cared at all. I just texted you on possible dates I'll be there.

VGK signs its second player and it's an interesting one. Interesting in the sense that there's a 99 percent chance he's on the roster next season.

They got a guy worth paying decent money. So that helps them get to the cap floor with other guys who.are young and inexpensive.

Rumor from Russia that Dadanov is about to sign with the golden knights as well:

Maybe they'll trade for Ovechkin if he's tired of losing in Washington

I like the Shipachyov signing a lot, especially after sleeping on it. Relatively cheap, short deal for a guy who is still basically in prime years and third in KHL in scoring. If it was three or four years, maybe not so much. Two years is great. Almost worst case scenario is that you have to pay him again in two years if they're contending for a playoff spot.

Also shows the fans that the team is not joking about shooting for the playoffs right away. This gives them some flexibility in the expansion draft to not have to go too young or too veteran. It's obvious, but the trick is going to be collecting as many assets (both players and picks) to be able to contend for the playoffs in a couple of years but still draft a lot of assets that are cheap and that will hopefully pay off in three or four years.

Also, Russians fucking love Las Vegas. Could also be the first sign that having a team in a -- let's say unique -- environment will help with FA signings. No income tax always helps too.

AHL affiliation with Chicago announced.

Not sure what that means for Saint Louis, who gets tagged pretty badly here by the Wolves management.

That's a really interesting (to me) angle... I will say, as the article points out repeatedly, the relationship between the Caps and the Bears is extremely strong. GMGM gets a lot of credit for leaving the franchise in really good shape.

Broadcast partner to be ROOT Sports.

My take is that it's an interesting play to eventually try to usurp the Avalanche as the "Team of the Rockies".

I think the ownership is thinking big about trying to make the team a worldwide brand to correspond with Las Vegas' status as a world capital of tourism, so this is more evidence that they're trying to build out an audience as large as possible from the get-go.

I am actually surprised by this. Teams have been trying to take bigger control of their rights recently. Going with a non-team affliated/owned channel is a bit strange. Examples: YES, MSG, MASN, Monumental Sports (Strong Arm deal with Comcast Sports Network for Wiz/Caps), NESN.

Bet ROOT is excited as this gets them no the cable providers they did not have deals with. Does this mean ROOT fights for some more local TV rights in the wide area they are covering.

Yeah, basically. They'll need to get added to cable systems in southern Nevada for starters. But I assume this deal is contingent on ROOT basically taking whatever carriage fees the cable systems offer and not playing hardball like the Pac-12 Network has with DirecTV for years, etc.

I think it makes sense because they were never going to have time to create their own TV network and even if they did the rights aren't as valuable now as they likely will be down the road. For now, this gets VGK games broadcast live in five whole states (comprising most of the Intermountain West other than western Colorado) and a big chunk of Arizona and southern California. In five years they might have the bandwidth to consider a regional cable network of their own. (Also, goes without saying who knows what the sports broadcasting landscape is going to look like in 5 years -- this is another acknowledgment that the safer bet that kicks the can down the road a little is what they're doing.)

1,347 pages of examples submitted to patent office to try and settle the denied trademark idiocy.

(Would be fascinated to see how much this is costing them in legal fees.)

Ice is down for the first time in the (still not fully completed) training facility for VGK. Could give a hint at what T-Mobile will look like with ice down (as far as center ice).
