In case you wondered how we're doin' out here in the desert. The low last night was 89.

For some reason, relying on prisoners that work to support to California firefighters isn't working out this time because they are overridden with COVID.

The prisoners earn between $2.90 and $5.12 per day, plus an additional $1 per hour during active emergency for their potentially life-threatening efforts. At least the laws have changed it so some of them can actually become real firefighters after being paroled.

Yeah, that's insane. The low was 79 in SLC this morning - but damn I'm glad I live up in the mountains right now.

We have the joys of 45-degree daily temperature swings - and running the heat and air conditioning at the same time - but god I don't miss extreme heat.

Yeah, we were planning to camp in central Idaho this weekend, but that area is looking pretty bad on the smoke maps.

Looks like it won't be a huge deal for you (most likely) but man are parts of the TX-LA border going to be vaporized

Apparently SLC has the fourth-most-polluted air in the world today. From the CA fires.

Hurricane force winds this morning in Salt Lake City and points north. The entire southeast side of the city is without power.

And up here in the mountains, just a little bit of snow.

Yeah they were talking about cooling centers a couple days ago. Now they have warming centers because thousands of people still don’t have power after the windstorm.

My pops in SE Wyo went from 100 to snow in ~36 hours. He got about 6” yesterday (nice). The snow came with crazy wind so there are trees down everywhere. Welcome relief from the fires though.

We drove from Jackson to Casper and then Casper to Denver the last couple of days. 93 in Jackson then about 3-4 inches on the car yesterday morning in Casper.

I have no idea how people can live in WYO....and we only saw one Confederate flag!

Something really weird around here. I don't smell smoke much anymore, but the air and sky appear to have a yellow filter on everything. My house stays fairly dark even with the curtains and blinds on the windows pulled open. Like we are living in some post-nuclear world. The SF Comical has an article about it.

I just bought plane tickets out there to spend sometime with my sister who's having a really rough time right now and kinda wishing I had taken a second to remember the fires. Hopefully things are looking better in two weeks.

Albuquerque had wind gusts of something like 70+ yesterday for several hours and like the rest of this part of the country went from summer to winter overnight. Really crazy weather.

Still 100,000 folks without power in Salt Lake City (temps down in the 40s down there). My son stayed here overnight so he could stay warm and recharge his laptop and phones.

That is so fucking creepy.

Still no power in a lot of places here. School district cancelled classes today about ten minutes after they started. And cancelled the rest of the week.

So our fourth First Day of School for this year will be next Monday.

Yeah, it felt like we were living on Mars yesterday. Frickin' eerie. Not to be redundant, but here's a couple shots my wife took from our house. The construction workers across the street set up big lights on their job site - in the middle of the afternoon!
