Helicopter hovering overhead seemingly less than a mile away which means either (1) something really bad happened or (2) its a slow NYC news day.

Trains into the city are down and apparently some people had been on them for like 2 hours without power which I imagine was pretty miserable.

(The Maplewood train station is 0.9 miles from me so if the train was there or somewhere b/w that station and South Orange, my estimate of how far the helicopter was away was pretty dead on. Nice work, Mister D!)

Glad I didn't go in today, Wednesday is my usual in-office day. My wife was stuck on a broken-down train for 4 hours in July while 8 months pregnant once. About as fun as you'd expect. No air, but they were able to open windows to get something of a breeze in, and I think they delivered water bottles at some point.

ETA: Overhead wire issues at the Maplewood Station completely shut down the M&E lines.

Any locals like Chris Gethard and want to see him up close and personal in Union's funkiest (and recently repaired*) little cafe?

I was about to buy tix but we have a family wedding in WV that weekend and might end up leaving Thursday evening.

He'll be at Fest in Gainesville this October. Really looking forward to seeing him live. And Cloud Nothings, Less Than Jake, Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits, Dillinger Four, Sparta, Samiam, and like 200 other bands.

Princeton?

The very good Greek place in the U has had a little ice cream stand in the restaurant for a couple of years, but they just this month opened a full storefront just for ice cream a couple of doors down from the restaurant. Pistachio was great.

We have had shit ice cream here since moving (hence knowing about a place in Bloomfield) but there's one opening this week, one that's going to sell out of a local shop, gelato also out of a local shop and rumors of another. In the words of the great Tracy Chapman (08-24-93), "the times, they are a-changin'".

One of the oldest's 3 or 4 jobs is at Fagic Mountain (changed so certain swampers can't find her) and they make their own stuff, plus I like their soft serve vanilla (sometimes that's all I want). They've gotten pricey the last couple years (but so has everyone, thanks Biden) to the point that she's sometimes embarrassed to give the total to some poor family who is going to need a loan to pay for 4 milkshakes.

Driving on Rt 22 I noticed a new dispensary in Scotch Plains that looks almost open, building painted and signs up (A21 Wellness and Dispensary). Driving past later, I saw a sign for another yet to open dispensary a few doors down. Just Googled, there are seven dispensaries that all received state approval on Rt 22 in Scotch Plains. That seems insane to me, it’s a small strip of road! Last I checked, there were only 13 licensed recreational dispensaries in the entire state, now they are opening 7 on the same road in one town? One is slated to be a 4 story operation with manufacturing onsite.

We’re getting a second one on 22 in the U. Don’t feel like reading back to see if it came up here but this next part I’m writing feels familiar (it’s pretty close to my house but on the wrong side of 22 and therefore difficult to get to).

They finally knocked down the Amboy Cinemas.

Also apparently Jack Antonoff is getting married on LBI this weekend and think of like the most famous people you can think of and they’re all headed there so glad we scooted past there before 10:30 this AM.

Ha, thought of you as I drove past the one remaining wall and half a sign today. Actually, we went to Holmdel Park, as my son wanted to show us the 5K course there for years. I don't think you were at Holmdel much during the elementary school/middle schools, were you? Wolfpack ran there almost every fall weekend.

I Googled, and Jack Antonoff married actress Margaret Qualley (the daughter in The Leftovers), and she is the real life daughter of Andie MacDowell. Qualley previously dated Pete Davidson and Shia LaBeouf, so not a good track record.
