Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - spoilers, eh?

Post by rass »

A Swamp or two had dedicated Harry Potter threads, and even if some of the more dedicated posters are gone, I'm giving it a go here.

Pretty depressing (story-wise) start to the book. Reading a script isn't as bothersome as I worried. Story is kicking in now, and not sure if it like the macguffin, but it's early. Might be a late night.

(I had pre-ordered the book from Amazon, but I wasn't due until Wednesday. My wife took it upon herself to grab a copy for me from Target this morning, and I was able to cancel the Amazon order.)

I almost bought it today. But I think I will wait for a paperback version. Not a huge play fan, but will eventually break down and get it.

It's been pretty easy to fall into a reading rhythm with the script-style. If you're at all concerned about some 2005-Dumbledore-dies-ish spoilers, I say go for it.

We closed one of the local sushi joints at midnight last night. The children's bookstore next door had a line out the door of ten year-old girls and their mothers anxious to buy the book. I'm guessing a couple of swampers were in those lines in your own towns.

Finished the book after dinner last night.

I think it could be a hell of a play and in-theater experience, especially given the cash I assume they had to put into the production.

It's a little hard to fully judge the story, since writing a script and writing a novel are so different, but it was fun to be back in the HP world for a bit.

The macguffin I referred to was the time turner and the use of time travel to drive the story. I guess I really didn't like it, even though I did in general enjoy the read. I thought Harry was too rough on "Dumbledore" in the scene where he argued with the portrait.

JKR has recently said she's done writing HP novels. If this story is to be taken as canon, then that probably makes sense, and I think maybe for the best.
