I saw Hornsby sit in with the Dead after Brent Mydland died. He was a pretty good fit.
I was going to post the same thing. His songs definitely were not Yacht Rock that night.

I wasn't aware Yacht Rock was a thing until one of my favorite podcasts brought it up. He actually convinced Sonny Ledford (he of Myrtle Beach Myrtle Beach Goddammotherfucking Myrtle Beach fame) to do a full show in his Yacht Rock alter ego persona.

Anyways, I apologize for possible diverting attention away from the Great Pruitting of twentyaughtsixteen, but.. A question:

Warren Zevon?

Me too, but I was disappointed. No spontaneous combustion.

Not in this adipose semite's opinion. He has some pissed off lyrics that are anything but fun and breezy (Exciteable Boy). If you want to put Werewolves in there, fine. But it does mention ripping someone's lungs out.

Yea but then comes back with that punchy line about him being sharply dressed. It's a wash.

FFS indeed!

A more interesting case would be Jimmy Buffett. Right era, generally the right subject matter, generally the right mood. Not that they're the ultimate arbiter, but I'm pretty sure Sirius/XM rarely (if ever?) includes him on their Yacht Rock channel. For no easily explainable reason, I say no. Though if something like Come Monday was someone else's song it would almost certainly work...

In my defense... I clearly stated I'm not quite sure what the genre really entails AND the link to the Steve Forberg stuff sure has a lot of Warren Zevon influence.

I wouldn't complain, but like I said...

I guess he's just his own genre at this point?

Buffett has his own channel. Otherwise, he's Yacht Rock.

Yeah, anything that sounds like What a Fool Believes is YR as fuck. Michael McDonald is on the Mount Rushmore of Yacht Rock.

It was weird that Hall and Oates were the antagonists in the series.

Yeah, I think of Yacht Rock as anything from that mid-late 70s to early 80s period of pussified (redundant?), blue-eyed soul. Almost always sung in a falsetto or naturally high voice.

So, not Teddy Pendegrass?

Joe Jackson's "Steppin Out" is included on my before mentioned Yacht Rock box set.

Always thought of him as more New Wave. I guess it could be listened to on a yacht, you know as you do lines with some hottie with huge hair those weird high hipped bikinis.

to quote Yacht Rock maybe episode 10 or 11 wrt Buffett:

"it's mellow, but not smooth. mostly shitty."

i concur.

I will venture to say that I am the Swamper who has spent the most time on yachts, and I can state without a doubt that I've never heard any of these musicians while on a yacht.

Which merely proves the completely likely theory that people who own yachts really suck.

Okay, now I understand how a Bruce Hornsby fan would get upset when an artist he likes gets dumped in with shlock like Kenny Loggins.

Teddy Pendergrass is soul.

Hootie and the Blowfish are Yacht Rock.

I'm no Hootie fan, but theirs is/was a completely different sound than yacht rock.

So I've been thinking a lot for some reason about the Mount Rushmore of yacht rock.

Here's my opinion.

Michael McDonald(obvs)
Kenny Loggins
Christopher Cross
Rupert Holmes (who I hate but I gotta be realistic)

I'll more or less not argue the first three guys.

#4 is a tough call, but nobody should argue with those top three.

You should not hate Ruppert. Because he made this song. A pop song about cannibalism.

Is Air Supply/Reo/Boston, or at least the soft 80s version of them, not Yacht Rock? I'd give the 4th spot as some combined tribute to that stuff (but the face is still Toto).

Yacht Rock on S/XM is touting a new Barbara Streisand channel. Is this the end of Yacht Rock radio?

I don't think Boston can be considered 'Yacht Rock', as bad as the song Amanda was. Songs like More than a Feeling are just too accomplished to wear the boat captain's hat.

They had said all along it was going to be off on Labor Day. Though supposedly they reserved one of the Internet channels for it. Just can't get it through your car radio any longer I don't think.

It's on Channel 714 now. Some newer cars/radios might get that. I don't unfortunately. But should be available for internet radio enjoyment year-round.
