If there was a cow that roamed free in a town and the residents liked it and then some smalldick paid $55K for trained hunters to lure the cow just outside of the town limits so he could kill it, you'd see plenty of outrage.

Nobody lets cows do that though because there are lots of cows and there aren't movies with a roaring cow in the opening logo.

I know I'm super late to this (out of town last week), but there's a segment on a This American Life about girls finding a wounded baby animal (I want to say it was a deer) in some rural area where hunting was prevalent. (Montana, or something like that.) And these girls raised it like a pet and EVERYONE in the town/area knew it and then some asshole shot it, because he was an asshole.

I don't know how much outrage it engendered, but there's a rough equivalency here. Lots of towns/regions have the equivalent of a mascot, and if you kill it on purpose, you're an asshole. Not really much debate, IMO.

But I also am glad I didn't have to sit through yet another episode of Faux Internet Outrage Theater last week. People need to stop mindlessly jumping on these viral outrage campaigns and think about the consequences before the join the latest online mob.

I know that's not exactly a hot take or anything, but when you watch this stuff happen from a relatively unplugged vantage point, it's pretty scary how quickly and how deeply people flip into "Burn the witch!!" mode. I'm not the type to constantly think "Man, this could happen to anyone! This could happen to me!"... But given what I do for a living (public relations), this trend absolutely freaks me out.

The pause in this sentence kills me, renders me mute. "Put your..." he starts, echoing the instruction already issued to him, and then he pauses, realizing he hasn't got anything that the word "put" can apply to, and so swears, stalling for time—"FUCKING", his tone escalating—all the while tugging ungently on a sticky seatbelt, and then he realizes the nub of the sentence, the point of it: to ask the cyclist if he would mind being quiet—and then the words all come to him at once, in grunts and chirps, until he is bellowing the most simple building blocks of the instruction that he can manage—"MOUTH SHUT!" before driving half a yard and then braking. God that sentence is perfect. Carve it on my arm in Cyrillic text. Laser etch it into my gravestone when I die.

I was about nine years old, and as a good Trojan fan I hated everything UCLA. But, one of my babysitters, a close family friend, was dating Mel Farr, and I met him, and he was really nice to me. A turning point in my life, I started thinking UCLA wasn't so bad.

Mel Farr and Lem Barney were my favorite Lions of the late 60s and early 70s. The Lions were actually good, and they were much of the reason. Dual rookies-of -the-year when they entered the league.

My youngest has always been subjected to bullying. She is trusting and not very aggressive. This summer she's being mildly bullied by kids who are 9 and 10; she is 14. She is bigger than most adult women, so she towers above them. But even young kids quickly realize that she is an easy target. Older ones get it even quicker.

We know she will face a life of this, and of course, much worse forms of exploitation when she is chronologically an adult but mentally still a kid.

What can a parent do? Especially as we know she'll outlive us by decades? That's a thought that will go through our heads -- and those of every parent of a special needs child -- every single day, forever.

Apparently it's a thing in China and Taiwan for a motorist who hits a pedestrian to back over them to make sure they're dead. The reasoning: motorists have to compensate the victims, and the one-time cost of funeral expenses, etc. is less than long-term care for an injured person. Also because in the absence of a living victim, it's easier to evade criminal charges.
