advice for downloading

i havent done this sort of thing in awhile. i just got a surface 3 and am about to go on a very long drive to colorado and back and want to load movies and books onto it so i have something to do in the car. where can i download movies, how do i go about it, and how can i do the same, preferably with stuff that is somewhat good. recommendations are welcome, software ideas are welcome, and the thing is i have no money to spend on this endeavor so if anybody wants to pm me that'd be great.

I call my Dad and he dropboxes me movies and books. He won't reveal his sources for some reason, and it seems like companies are doing a better job pulling pirated materials. I stopped when they enforced an anti-pirating law and Verizon sent me a notice from NBC's Legal Dept warning me that I illegally downloaded something 9 months prior.
