New Year's Resolutions

Post by LewP »

Hey Swamp,

Long time no see!
As we enter 2017 and another New Year, the subject of new year's resolutions always comes in to play. Yes, I'm certain the usual weight loss and stop smoking resolutions will be the most prominent, but will people also have weired, off the cuff resolutions?

I guess my resolution will be to enjoy life more. I need to stop freaking worrying so much, especially when it comes to money. How about you?

I've been thinking about this...

And aside from being more committed to the gym in the coming year, I want to learn to ride horses.

1) Continue to make financially sound decisions. If I manage things correctly I could have my house paid off in another 24-26 months. That's a big goal in addition to starting to fund my retirement.

2) Maybe add another pup to the family. Depending on the status of Kaylee's cancer and if/when it comes back.

3) Be more accepting of views other than my own. Try to put myself in the shoes of others more often. Volunteer/give back more. Be slower to anger and continue to learn to control my temper.

4) Spend more time growing my business and less time on social media.

5) Spend more time with my immediate family. Couple fewer binge drinking nights and a couple more nights playing games or visiting with the family would do me good.

6) Maintain my weight. I'm in the best shape I've been in for a long time. I'd like to stay on the wagon as long as possible.

Just a general health resolution. Trips to the gym are fine, but I should eat a hell of a lot better.

And I'm going to take up meditation. Stress levels are pretty good, but I had the first and God willing the only panic attack of my life three months ago.

Oh, and taking curling lessons next month!

Be a better parent (more patience with my older son).

I don't bother with the exercise/weight nonsense because that will never happen.

Chart my own path instead of riding the one imposed by others. Wife got laid off and it's a great opportunity to reevaluate everything but we're already heading down the first new gig business as usual path. And it's not in anyone's best interest. Making the easy decisions instead of the right decisions way too much.

I'm not a big resolution guy, but this dude kinda gives me the idea that I need to learn some skills. Or maybe hone them better. I can juggle three things, but not 4 or 5. And I can spin a basketball, but not like a Globetrotter. And I can solve a Rubik's Cube but it's because I memorized 8 algorithms and not because of my exceptional spacial relations abilities.

That's a cool idea. But it really took that guy almost 7 hours to learn how to do a wheelie on a bike?

I'm sure it's most due to balance and weight of the bike. When I was younger I was able to do it quite well on my own bike, but not on others. I'm sure it would take me many cumulative hours to get better on a different bike and surely longer if I tried today.

Kind of reminds me when I was learning to do double unders when I started CrossFit. I simply couldn't do them. I never had the timing right. Then after 10 minutes a day for a few weeks I'd get a couple and it would build. Eventually I got to 30, then 50, then 80. My personal best is 122, I think. It kills my forearms.

Edit: here's how to solve a Rubik's Cube

I've never been a resolution guy, but what the fuck, maybe typing out some goals will help me do something to break my current zombie sleepwalking through life rut.

1.) Lose weight, of course. Giving up beer would be the easy solution, but that ain't happening. Sadly, beer has become my only hobby. Drinking, buying and making. Now I've found several parents on my kids sports teams who are equally into beer, so I've been making friends with them, and reconnecting with a college friend over this obsession.

2.) Join a sports league. Haven't played on a team since having kids. All of the adult soccer leagues I'm finding play on weeknights at 9-midnight, and are all 20+ minutes away. I need to suck it up and commit.

3.) Meditation might be a good idea, people say it helps with "being present," which is my biggest issue with depression, which is the cause of the zombie sleepwalking issue.

That's a good start.

That's my only resolute, uh, resolution. Starting with the Headspace app and shooting for everyday in the morning before work. So far so good.

We’re going to break up the routine and do Dryuary. Anything that lacks the sameness of the last 20 months has to be a positive, right?

Haven't had FB on my phone for years for this reason and it helps. FB is less doomscrolling for me than Twitter, but there's nothing good there.

- Dry January
- Daily vitamin
- A little more skin care
- More food shortcuts in service of not grabbing dumb quick shit for work lunch ... (first one being premade dressing and pre-shredded carrots for salads rather than pretending I'll grate one every day if I'm busy)

I mentioned this in the New Years Thread:
  • Better portion control on meals - I almost never do "seconds" on dinner, but going to try to do smaller first servings
  • Food waste - decided to be more aware of what I'm buying at the store, and not having things that sit in the refrigerator for a while and end up getting thrown out.
  • Wearing something beyond polo shirts when I go into the office - I've got a closet full of nice button down shirts that I almost never wear, using the excuse that they'll get wrinkled if I take them to work in my bike bag.
