Sure, but what's Chris Berman have to do with it?
Re: 2017 NFL Offseason
Spanos will be the most hated man in his hometown, with no offset from L.A., where they won't even give a shit.

I'll be really impressed if the next coach can win with the 49ers. The talent just isn't there, anymore.

He can take Jimmy G with him, potentially...for a price.sancarlos wrote:I'll be really impressed if the next coach can win with the 49ers. The talent just isn't there, anymore.

Re: 2017 NFL Offseason
The Jimmy G thing is the only reason I could see him going to SF. Gets a player he's coached for cheap for a year, plus can negotiate. Another bonus is that he gets to build it in his image and not piss off everyone like he did in Denver as there is no one that's a fan favorite/star.
If he waits for a year he would have to bid for Jimmy G, and who knows who's open next year. Arizona maybe? Colts?

Apparently Doug Whaley was actually involved in hiring new Bills HC Sean McDermott.
I've been through too many new coach hirings to have an opinion until mid November 2017.

Re: 2017 NFL Offseason
Assuming that it would require giving up one or more more draft picks from the first half of their draft, the 49ers would be nuts to trade for Garropolo this offseason. They had a historically awful defense this year -- dead last in rushing yards allowed, total yards allowed, and points allowed, while allowing opposing QBs to average a 97 QB Rating. Even with Pro Bowl-caliber QB play, I doubt they could've won more that 5 or 6 games max. They need to use their early draft picks on accumulating high-end defensive talent and use 2017 as a rebuilding year to get that young talent experience. (In my opinion, Myles Garrett or Jonathan Allen #2 overall is a no-brainer.) If they trade the picks for Garoppolo or, alternatively, use the #2 pick on a QB, they may have a better offense, but it'll be nowhere good enough to counterbalance such a bad defense.Rush2112 wrote:The Jimmy G thing is the only reason I could see him going to SF. Re: 2017 NFL Offseason
I also think that McDaniels will wait until he gets a very, very positive situation to leave after how poorly things went in Denver. Is he really going to become a worse head coaching candidate by staying in New England and possibly getting more titles as an OC while working with Brady and Belichick, not to mention continuing to distance himself from the Denver flameout at the same time? He's only 40 years old. Maybe he will just wait out Belichick and take over NE down the line.

Re: 2017 NFL Offseason
Did LA really need another NFL team?
You know what you need? A lyrical sucker punch to the face.
Re: 2017 NFL Offseason
Nope.
From everything I can read Spanos is convinced that the team will be worth more in LA and even though the NFL would likely rather keep the team in SD (if for no other reason than to leave LA open as a possible relocation threat for other teams), enough of the other owners like Spanos and/or feel like they sort of screwed him over by siding with the Rams' LA stadium plan instead of the Chargers/Raiders plan that they're willing to let him do what he wants here (plus he'll be paying them all millions of dollars to move, too). Dumb.

IIRC, they gave him the LA option when they sided with the Rams a year ago. So, they really can't deny his right to exercise it.pass wrote:... they're willing to let him do what he wants here (plus he'll be paying them all millions of dollars to move, too). Dumb.

Re: 2017 NFL Offseason
Yeah, this sucks. I'm originally from the L.A. area and the Chargers sort of became my team by default when the Rams/Raiders left, but I didn't want this at all. You can make fun of their relatively lukewarm levels of fan support, but that team's identity was tied to San Diego.

Re: 2017 NFL Offseason
I find it hard to believe this is the best the Rams could do. Does Kronke think he's reaching Millennials with this? Tough to envision how he can get older veterans on board. Having Kirk Cousins throw incomplete fades to Desean Jackson hardly seems like a criteria for taking over a team in the second largest media market.

Re: 2017 NFL Offseason
Are the Chargers really angling to be the Chivas USA of the NFL?
Re: 2017 NFL Offseason
And, the Rams just hired Wade Phillips to be defensive coordinator. He'll turn 70 this year. So, nearly 40 years older than his boss.Johnnie wrote:

I like the Broncos' hire of Vance Joseph, but I'm sorry to see Wade go.

Re: 2017 NFL Offseason
Not apprehensive after the last young hot coordinator worked out so well? My coworker likes his ties to CO, but just one year as a DC? I know Miami had injuries, but not like that D set the world on fire. I guess he does have Elway to throw ideas off, and who he hires as his coordinators, but i am surprised that Wade left, especially because they'd worked together with Texans.sancarlos wrote:

Re: 2017 NFL Offseason
He has been widely applauded by coaches and players who were with him at all three of his previous NFL coaching stops. He seems to have a strong presence and solid maturity, from what I've read. I'm willing to give him a shot, although you never know with a first-time head coach. And, I'm proud of the franchise for hiring an African-American. It is widely expected that he will name the current defensive backs coach Joe Woods as DC. The leading contender for OC is recently-fired Charger coach Mike McCoy, who was Denver's OC during the Orton/Tebow years and the first year of Manning with the Broncos.Rush2112 wrote:Not apprehensive after the last young hot coordinator worked out so well? I'm not on Twitter that often, so it's awesome too see the media sections of these teams having fun and interacting like they did. Those @ replies between the Dodgers and Lightning are perfect.

Re: 2017 NFL Offseason
Looks like the Raiders just got a big step closer to making their move to Las Vegas a reality. They've got Mark Davis' stake, they've got the Nevada public money stake, but still needed the third piece. Which was expected to come from Sheldon Adelson, but he's been playing hardball in his negotiations with Davis - likely demanding a sizable ownership stake, which Davis doesn't want to give.
But, as noted in the Las Vegas paper, and in this piece in the SF Comical, the Raiders say that Goldman Sachs has guaranteed the necessary third leg of the financing stool, should they not get it from Adelson. So, that solves the financing issue, and the NFL is expected to approve the deal.
