Brian Burke really ought to star as an arch-villain in a Hollywood superhero movie. With his demeanor and look, he'd be perfect.

Just because it'll be fun to look back on in a month, Rangers forwards ...
Don't trade: Kreider, Zibanejad, Miller, Hayes
Only in a no-doubt trade: Stepan, Buchnevich
For the right return: Nash, Zuccarello, Vesey (although it would be shitty)
Expansion guys: Grabner, Lindberg, Fast

Re: 2017 NHL Offseason
fwiw, I'm betting the Sharks lose one of these four guys to Vegas, in order of probability:
1) D Brendan Dillon. Serviceable 5/6 defenseman. Tough, good shot, slow, decent contract.
2) LW Mikael Boedker. Disappointing free agent signing. Overpaid, speedy, can't finish, but has potential.
3) D Paul Martin. Old and showing signs of age, slowing down, overpaid. But smart player who paired well with Burns.
4) W Joonas Donskoi. Had disappointing down season, partly due to injury. Has potential, might be protected.

There is more than a 50/50 chance that the Flames will not get a new arena and leave.sancarlos wrote:Brian Burke really ought to star as an arch-villain in a Hollywood superhero movie. With his demeanor and look, he'd be perfect.
The Flames are a extremely poorly run organization and the city in general has no appetite to keep them. At this point only a successful 2026 Winter Olympic bid would get a new arena and the city hasn't decided whether to pursue that or not. They need to decide by the end of the year.
Starting this year the Saddledome will be the oldest NHL arena (I'm counting MSG as new since they spent a billion in it). And the Stampeders play in the oldest CFL stadium. Even if they signed an agreement today it would take another 3-4 years to build. They are nowhere close.

I guess Quebec would be the obvious destination of choice, if the league would allow it, eh?

can't move teams west to east or east to west.

Re: 2017 NHL Offseason
Of course they can, they'd just have to move Columbus (or possibly Detroit, but most likely Columbus) to the Western Conference.degenerasian wrote:sancarlos wrote:I guess Quebec would be the obvious destination of choice, if the league would allow it, eh?

ETA: That said I'd be surprised if Calgary moved. I suspect the NHL would exhaust all options and then some before moving a Canadian team at this point, even if it was to another Canadian city.

Re: 2017 NHL Offseason
I think Columbus and Detroit have agreements to never move West again. Especially since all 16 teams in the Eastern Conference are in the Eastern timezone and the 15 other teams are not.brian wrote:Of course they can, they'd just have to move Columbus (or possibly Detroit, but most likely Columbus) to the Western Conference.degenerasian wrote:sancarlos wrote:I guess Quebec would be the obvious destination of choice, if the league would allow it, eh?

Re: 2017 NHL Offseason
Well, I doubt those agreements are written in blood. The NHL probably has some latitude even though I'm sure they don't want to mess with the conferences if they don't have to.
By the way, all 31 NHL jerseys with the new adidas designs will be unveiled on 6/20.

Re: 2017 NHL Offseason
Very excited to see which team super fucks up, either on rules or by thinking a contract that is very draftable isn't draftable.
Re: 2017 NHL Offseason
I guess this an awkward side-effect of going to the Finals in a year with an expansion draft but word coming out of the celebrations in Pittsburgh makes it sound like MAF really is willing to waive his NMC so he can be exposed (and Murray protected) in the draft.
I felt aswirl with warm secretions.
Re: 2017 NHL Offseason
Yeah. That worked OK, I guess.mister d wrote:He waived it back in February, probably to avoid a move before the deadline (I think his NTC was limited?).

Re: 2017 NHL Offseason
Seems like he really loves it in Pittsburgh. If I were a fan, knowing they'd told him months ago they planned on throwing him out would really put a damper on this season.

And then to get benched after keeping the team afloat for 2.5 rounds in the playoffs.
:(
MAF didn't have much of a choice here unless he wanted tarnish his legacy on the way out of town, but from all accounts the front office and Sullivan were open with him. Absent the absolute storybook ending, this turned out about as well as possible (including Murray being pretty incredible the last two games of the series).

Re: 2017 NHL Offseason
Curious if VGK takes him. It's the obvious move especially if Pittsburgh doesn't expose anyone "better". There's been rumors they might try to get some younger goalies with more long-term upside though.
(Also seen rumors that MAF's wife was house hunting in Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago, so who the hell knows what's really going on?)

The parade for the champs isn't until Wednesday, so you aren't raining on anything today.mister d wrote:Gonna be weird when Vegas flips him to the Flyers, huh?

Re: 2017 NHL Offseason
Everything I've read says that the goalie that Vegas really covets is Washington's backup, Philipp Grubauer. That's not to say they might not want MAF as their second goalie.brian wrote:Curious if VGK takes him. It's the obvious move especially if Pittsburgh doesn't expose anyone "better". Re: 2017 NHL Offseason
I suspect they'll probably try to flip a few goalies since they can draft something like 4 I think? Lots of teams might be willing to part with a draft pick to upgrade their backup (or starting) goalie situation.

At least they didn't have to "waste" a spot protecting him I guess.mister d wrote:I hate the contract and usage of Girardi because it forced today to happen.

Re: 2017 NHL Offseason
Gotcha. I think there's likely to be a lot of moves in the next three days that will make a lot more sense once the protected lists are released and VGK can start announcing trades/deals they've made.mister d wrote:If there's not a move coming ahead of expansion, that's actually worse than protecting him. Nick Holden sucks.

Re: 2017 NHL Offseason
Yeah, that's the hope, and re-signing Brendan Smith would be just fine. I was really annoyed they didn't atleast ask Girardi and Staal to waive their NMCs just in case that deadline passed and a trade for a D came up, but I guess they already knew.
Re: 2017 NHL Offseason
You follow the Rangers much more closely than I do, but I thought that Girardi is worse than Holden. No? (Also, older.)mister d wrote:If there's not a move coming ahead of expansion, that's actually worse than protecting him. Nick Holden sucks.

Re: 2017 NHL Offseason
Honestly, I have no idea. Girardi was so overmatched in his role that I don't even know how to assess what he really is and how well he could handle a standard 3rd pair role. I think definitely better than the stat translations and maybe a bit better than most Rangers fans think, especially given his right-handedness. Holden is a 7th defenseman who can step in on either side but shouldn't be playing regularly on a playoff team. Right now, I'd be happier protecting two than adding Holden to the list.

Re: 2017 NHL Offseason
With the caveats of (1) something is up with Drouin, (2) defense isn't yet publicly quantified, (3) this is Yzerman against Bergevin and (4) I know nothing of Sergachev beyond his draft spot and a scouting report, this seems like a huge Montreal win.
Re: 2017 NHL Offseason
Very weird that Drouin goes so cheaply. More news to come?
