Also getting a chuckle from Lichaj's post game presser. Apparently his wife said he gets a dog if he scores a hat trick. So he stepped up to take the penalty and was basically told to go away. So now all of the Forrest fans are blowing up his wife's twitter with pictures of dogs and posts saying to get him a dog.
Lichaj got a dog....cute pup. Dog's name....Gunner.

So is there more than weekly wages or am I just realizing now that Premier League players are roughly on scale with NHL players?

There's potentially more in endorsements, and some of the contracts are announced as post-tax, but otherwise, you're spot on.

I think I assumed, because of the transfer fees, that the players were on like an NBA scale. Like Ederson making under $3.5MM is mind-blowing.

And I believe that players often get a chunk of cash when they are transferred - either as a percentage or as a signing fee that is tacked on to the amount one club gives another.

Not always. It's been reported that Coutinho paid $10m of his own money to Liverpool to facilitate the transfer to Barcelona.

Yeah that benefit is negotiated into the contract on a player-by-player basis. Although 10% was a pretty common number in Europe for a while. However the MLS Labor agreement includes a provision that no $ goes to the players on transfer are allowed in the contract.

I'm not upset about this one, but I probably should be. As great as Sanchez has been for Arsenal, I feared him leaving from day one. Every emotional outburst on the field, and there are many every single game, I used to worry about him wanting out. This was inevitable for the past 6 months to a year. He demanded to be the highest paid player in the EPL, and Arsenal can't afford it, and refuse to pay high wages even if they could afford it. I was worried they would hold Sanchez through the season, and end up losing him on a free transfer. With all the talk of a trade for Mkhitaryan, I assumed there would be money coming with Mkhitaryan, so that kind of sucks.

I actually haven't seen much of him at ManU, but I loved his play at Dortmund and the very few times I saw him for Shahktar. I think his style fits well with Arsenal. If Arsenal can sign Aubameyang, I'll be happy. Arsenal has a team negotiating with Dortmund today, so hopefully this gets done. Just saw Aubameyang is 28, I would have guessed several years younger, so I'm surprised Wenger is after him, but I think Wenger has one more year, max. The weird thing is Aubamayang just signed an extension with Dortmund through 2021, after refusing to negotiate a new contract. Not sure what that means, or why it happened. All the talk is that Dortmund want Giroud in order to make a deal. How weird would it be to see Arsenal make 2 trades in January involving such high profile players?

As for Walcott, kind of sad to see him go, but he only sees the field in Cup matches and Europa League at this point. He was on the verge of becoming World Class several times, but injuries or loss of confidence prevented that from happening. The year he broke his leg against Tottenham, he was at the absolute top of his game, and just never quite made it back to that form.

But we will always have this amazing hat trick against Newcastle. Shots to Cerrano and Rass.

Mkhi reminds me of Ozil for some reason. He's not as laconic, but there's something about his skill that reminds me of Mesut. Watching them together will be interesting.

Ozil might still be sold this month, which would make sense if Mkhi replaces him, and that sale funds the Aubameyang purchase. I just haven't heard anything about offers for Ozil, and he seems lazily content to continue with Arsenal.

I was thinking the other day about a midfield of Mahrez, Ozil & Mkhitaryan - how would you like to be in the back 4 behind them

Nordic Messi (MIx Diskerud) could not cut it with NYCFC or with IFB Göteborg. So he is now a member of Manchester City.
Okay the only explanation for this is someone owed his agent a favor or Man City is so bored with this year's premiership race that they are seeing what they can do to make it interesting.

Ah that is a really nice bonus for NYCFC's salary cap management. Having a sugar daddy that can just pickup a bad contract is something most MLS teams don't have (we miss you Chivas USA). But also guess it helps that he has an EU passport.

Pretty interesting three-way trade of strikers:

Aubameyang from Dortmund to Arsenal
Giroud from Arsenal to Chelsea
Batshuayi from Chelsea to Dortmund

I'll miss Batshuayi's enthusiasm and poaching at Chelsea, but for whatever reason, Conte never really trusted him. Probably just too sloppy with the ball, but he's young and strong and has a very good overall goals/minute rate.

I think Giroud probably fits Conte's plan for striker at Chelsea better. Like Morata, he can be a target guy for crosses to the head. Does Chelsea now lead the world in handsome strikers?

Fascinating player. Notice in the entire compilation, they could only find one shot on goal, and one long range speculative shot that went way wide. He is the fastest player I've ever seen, has unbelievable moves, but it's like watching someone drive a Ferrari into a wall. I remember the announcers talking about him when he came on against Arsenal. He was instantly game changing, yet all of his flash led to absolutely nothing. They said he had never scored a goal, and I see he just scored his first goal in the Championship this year. In the last 2 years, 53 appearances, one goal. I can't comprehend a forward being that skilled, with such a horrible rate. If he can ever put it together, he will be a ton of fun to watch.

So on the weekend, Spurs were lucky to leave Newport County with a tie.

Today, they made Man U look like Stoke.

Go figure.

(And how much fun to see Alexis Sanchez play like he had gout?)

And they had pretensions of challenging for the Champions League before the season started. Winners of 1 in 9 played. They were the worst team Spurs have played this year.

WTF just happened there?

The last 15 minutes of that game was next-level insanity. A guy who never scores hit a shot Ronaldo would have trouble duplicating, an offside and dive rewarded with a penalty, the best scorer in the EPL hits a brutally bad penalty. An offside goal (albeit an absolutely outstanding goal), and a brutally bad penalty call made by a linesman, and then the goal as time ran out?

Stunned. I'm pretty much hoarse from yelling.

Happy as hell with the way Spurs played that second half. My Liverpool buddy is more pissed off with his team than with his ref.

I HATE Erik Lamela. This is his 4th season at Spurs and I can honestly say that he has never once been a factor in a game. Can't pass, fouls all the time, can't shoot, not a good tackler.

This is a still from the first time he played a major role in a big game for Spurs. And it was a heinous dive.
