Annular Solar Eclipse Next Saturday

A solar eclipse will be visible from numerous U.S. states next Saturday, Oct. 14, a day highly anticipated by self-described “eclipse chasers” who have called the events life-changing, equating the sight to “looking upon the eye of God.”

October’s eclipse is annular, meaning that the moon will be between the Earth and sun, but at or near its farthest distance from the Earth. That means the sun will create a bright ring effect around the moon. You might now be able to see the "ring of fire" unless you are in a specific band, but you will be able to see the eclipse.

Link, with map showing band

Link where you can put in your city and see what time the eclipse is best seen

Important: Wear protective eyewear when viewing eclipse (unless you are a moron, like this guy)

Oh my. Thank you for reviving this thread. I completely forgot when that dumbass was looking directly into the sun.

We didn't stand a chance during the pandemic.

The highway department already has their message boards warning people of heavy eclipse-viewing traffic.

For me it continues to be his diatribes against Wind Farms. Everyone makes just about the whole "windmills cause cancer"...but he didn't really say that...he said that the NOISE from the windmills causes cancer.

We looked at going to Fredericksburg for the one this April until we found an AirBnb for $20k a night that’s normally $200. I think it goes right over my Mom’s house so we will definitely be there.

That’s kinda an evergreen sentiment.

It’s gorgeously sunny there too, right? My wife’s watching a live feed from there.

Like 350 days a year or something. It was such a revelation to live there after a few years in Germany when the sky was always gray.

The eclipse in April is gifting our children with a day off school, as we should have one minute and 18 seconds of full eclipse during the middle of what is normally busing kids home.

I expect 100% cloud coverage during the eclipse.

man <geek alert> - no lie i've been waiting for this since i was 9 :) - flashback to 1979 elementary school, us watching a west-coast eclipse on tv and them mentioning there'd be a total eclipse in 2024 was just too fking science fiction to believe it'd ever arrive and yet here we are.

where we live is very literally in the most direct path possible. i bought the 10-pack of eclipse glasses last year - i'm ready.

....

it absolutely is gonna pour that day.

I just booked a couple nights in downtown Cleveland, about 6 blocks from the waterfront/Rock n Roll HoF, so assuming I can get a sitter for my kittie-cats, I'll be there. The Guardians have a game that night, so I'll be able to check another ballpark off the list.

My dad turned 75 last month and what he wanted was for us (he and my mom, my sister and BIL, and my wife and kids) to all get a house somewhere in a prime viewing zone (or close enough to drive). We've got a cabin somewhere slightly south of Rochester. Should be fun.

Been driving through Illinois and Missouri for last four days and there is eclipse-related stuff everywhere. Just caught a load west and frankly kind of glad I’m not going to be driving around here at the time this is going on.

Still not a lot of clear skies forecasted west of Champlain. How many super-enthusiasts are out there that are willing to drive last-minute to the nearest guaranteed good spot? If it's more than like 10, Vermont is in trouble.

I was just coming here to ask if there I’m wrong to not care about this. Scheduled a call for 2:00. People keep posting where you can get free glasses, and I have little interest. The last one I was working from home. Went outside and two neighbors were out, one had glasses. Passed it around, and we were all like “ I guess that’s it?”
