I bet Vegas is not last in the West.

They certainly drafted like that was their intent.

You can prop wager that in Vegas, I bet.

Anyway, as bad as Colorado and Vancouver are likely to be, I expect they will each be a lot better than Vegas this season.

I suspect you need to put Detroit lower.

I made my comment before I thought to myself "who is Vancouver's goalie?" and then checked. Vancouver might contend. I think the Avs should be a small tier up if they move Duchene for current help.

So the Las Vegas team can't have beards? What happens in the playoffs?

What are you talking about? I don’t think they have a rule against beards, do they?

I just read an article that included a picture of Deryk Engelland and he had a beard. Link?

Well playoff beards are a policy they won't have to worry about for another three years.

I am really surprised by that rule. 5 o’clock shadows are very common in hockey (like all sports).

Loser point is the dumbest thing. Still don't get it. Bring back ties.

Fucking NBCSN. When your team is playing in the second half of a double-header, you can count on missing half the first period.

moving this here

MaxWebster wrote:timing horrific as they're down 0-3 already (or maybe perfect timing...) but the Jets *should* be a top 3 in that division based on talent alone. goaltending was the scapegoat last year, not without reason, but it's almost never that simple.

Goalie should be a strength if anything. Neither is elite, but they can hot-hand themselves into a real good place.

The Jets lose too many stupid games like this to be a contender. Defense and goaltending is not good enough. I watched the parts of it yesterday and Byfuglien was skating randomly everywhere. That's no defending.

For the Flames, I'm not too disappointed in yesterday, they were quite organized but couldn't get anything going offensively. Not many teams will hold Edmonton to 2(3) goals this year.

Looks like there are a few rows of empty seats in the lower section on Little Caesars Arena for the Wings' opener. That's good, right?

First time in 100 years that 4 players have opened the regular season with a hat trick.
Wayne Simmonds, Connor McDavid, Alex Ovechkin (18th career..most of anyone since 2005) and Brandon Saad

Going to the Caps- Montreal game on Saturday night.

I don't think hockey-reference can do this - when's the last time 3 different 21-and-unders scored a goal in the same game?

yeah i'll agree with you and even this summer it was downright puzzling that management and Paul Maurice especially was rehired. Again, trying to not take the easy route here but if you've got that much talent that's NHL-established or ready and you're playing like a bunch of drunken chickens in your own zone for years... where does the problem lie other than an obvious conclusion?

If you have Cox Cable (the largest cable company in town), it won't. They still haven't worked out an agreement to carry the network that has the TV deal. It is on if you have DirecTV, DISH or CenturyLink. Rams Fanny and I are going up to a bar (where there is also a fundraiser for shooting victims going on) to watch the game tonight.

Further thoughts on this...

I looked at Vegas's roster, and their defense looks pretty respectable. That should keep them in a lot of games. They will be scoring-challenged, though. (They are kind of the opposite of Colorado, who has good forwards but a weak defense.)

Speaking of Colorado - Mr. D, did you see the game last night?

No way the Caps finish second in the East. They are extremely shaky on D and their bottom 6 have a what the fuck is going on vibe that is either going to sort out and make them a decent squad or put them in fighting to make the playoffs scenario.

In a related story, there's gotta be a better/shorter way to refer to "AT&T Sportsnet Rocky Mountain". That doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

Just gotta get rid of 98% of the coverage area and then it can be named after a city.
