Wow. Was that expected? I didn't hear any rumblings of a manager shakeup there.

I knew it was possible but it's still pretty surprising to me. The tweets to this point suggest that it was for personality/clubhouse reasons, which is very plausible, but it's also plausible that they simply don't want to pay him the money he will command. We'll know more when the replacement is named I guess.

Its already leaking out that its clubhouse stuff and not as mutual as originally framed. I'll say (1) the new manager will almost assuredly make more dumb in-game decisions and manage the pen worse and (2) it was necessary if the disconnects involved the young guys. Looking back, its super weird that his prominent defender post-non-challenge was a guy who had only been around for a couple months.

Jesus. Girardi gives a pretty sincere and raw quote and the Yankees give ... this ...

Nobody roots for the Yankees because of their people skills.

Well, he still thinks he's a catcher so I don't blame them.

It really might be as simple as that. If they didn't think he could effectively manage Sanchez, which is pretty possible given his career and his dislike of Posada, he couldn't be their manager going forward.

No way, not at this point. Next time this comes up, if Cashman isn't GM, it might be in play?

I know Mattingly's ability as a manager is open to question, but you don't get any more "True Yankee" than him, do you?

I don't know that you get any more "mediocre, uninspiring manager" than him either. I expect this choice will be a non-name that can handle kids and numbers and be content letting the players be the sole focus. Its too early to have actual names floating around, but I've seen a lot of speculation on Espada (3B coach) and Dave Martinez already.

Unless he's a total dick who Harper will hate, the Nationals should hire Girardi, right? The main reason to fire Dusty was his suspect in-game tactics and Girardi would be a clear upgrade there.

Hire Raul Ibanez and call it a day.

I have a feeling Harper's going to go to the Cubs after next season. I have a feeling about him wanting to play with Bryant, wanting to play in a big market, but not wanting to play in New York. Presumably the Cubs won't win the World Series next year (though they might!) and Cubs ownership might finally decide to hell with the luxury tax.

(I think the Dodgers might be a close second.)

He'd definitely be the right type, but I wonder if he's not going to wait a year and just take a break.

The Nats should trade Harper if they're under 50/50 thinking they can sign him. The return would be amazing and whatever value loss they have this year would be gained multiple times over in the future.

If they're going to do it, they have to do it during the offseason (which I think is what you're saying). Return would be bigger and would blunt the optics of a team that is presumably going to be in the playoff race trading its best player in late July. Of course, the other issue there is if Harper is behind Baker being fired then that ship might have already sailed. He's a somewhat inscrutable guy so it's hard to know just how happy he is playing in Washington.

Agreed. Figure out which GM on an 85 win team is most worried about getting fired and go nuts.

As is often the case, this post obliquely references something I was not aware of. Consider this my public service post for those of you in the same boat. LINK

I think Kapler is a breath of fresh air.

I don't understand that at all. If I'm the Lerners, I sue on the basis that MLB has allowed the Orioles to exercise its territorial rights on federal land.

The article under the Silver Sluggers mentioned Boston being interested in TMGS. I feel like that's one of the parks where his homers would go down significantly and turn into a lot of off-the-monster doubles.

If he went to Boston they'd have to put protective netting up from pole to pole and over top the Mass Pike.
