I think there’s some truth to what you’re saying. Reagan is mythologized to an absurd degree and there are a lot more similarities between Reagan and Trump than people would like to acknowledge. There are the economic policies for sure, and while Reagan was more subtle about it than Trump he could be quite nasty in his treatment of vulnerable minority groups. Whenever I hear people say “whatever happened to the party of Reagan” I roll my eyes because I’m pretty sure that despite all the idealistic nonsense in his speeches and campaign ads, Reagan would be a big-time Trump supporter.

Trump wants to be bigger than everyone - Obama more so than Reagan. That much is true.

But the specifics? The trickle down nonsense is Republican dogma, the Gorbachev comment is out of context (Reagan was urging more freedom for Eastern Europe, not closer ties between the USSR and the USA.) The star wars/space force thing is coincidence and the women point seems like the punch line from a joke.

The better Reagan parallel to the Trump/Russia stuff is that Reagan was investigated for secretly colluding with Iran, a country that was a hell of a lot more hostile to the USA in 1980 than Russia is now, to delay the release of the hostages until after the election.

Trump wants to fuck minorities and the poor as hard as Reagan did. So, yes.

And as far as the "party of Reagan" indignance amongst people that Joe K mentioned, this is the party of Reagan. When I joined the military in '01 and got to my first base in Louisiana the following summer, I said something about liking Bill Maher and his show (unaware of his firing because of what he said) my linebacker sized shop chief with the voice of the neighbor in Office Space just straight said in front of everyone "What the fuck did you just say? You like that fucking traitor? It's the liberal shit that he says that tears this country apart."

I was shocked. Despite growing up in the liberal hellscape of Massachusetts where I had a great education, having a local politician mother, and deciding to leave the place to enlist, i couldn't believe my boss would say some shit like that. As I learned the ropes of who was around me, it was evident who exactly joins the military and despite rules to not talk politics in the shop, it happened frequently.

I say that to say: Donald Trump gives permission to these people to be themselves openly. Their prototypical Republican face was always a white man in a suit with an articulate way of stating things. Now it's one of them. Bush voters listened to the crazies on am radio on the way to work with their disgusting viewpoints. Rush, Savage, Hannity..etc, but voted for the statesman with a nice presence in the voting both. There was always a disconnect amongst Republican voters. If only their representative couple do what the am radio personality said! That's a perspective no one seems to be looking at. Republican voters were a reluctant bunch who had to choose people like....Mitt Romney? They want a charicature of a mix of John Wayne, Jesus, and Larry the Cable Guy. A tough talking, straight shooting alpha type with the same intelligence level they have. They don't want a college educated autocrat.

With every election and every new generation of voter the Republicans had to keep scraping the bottom of the barrel. When Democrats went high, they went lower and lower. And that's why they keep winning. Appeal to the lowest common denominator low information voter with someone they can identify with, decency be damned.

And even worse, sold weapons to them while he was president to fund an illegal war in Central America. If Watergate had never happened, I'm convinced Reagan may have been impeached, though I'm not sure he would have been convicted in the Senate and removed from office. That certainly would have tarnished his presidency. Given the way the GOP has acted in continually bad faith for three+ decades, House Democrats back them should have impeached Reagan.

I'd say that the US government is immoral, but adherence to the rule of money is technically a type of morality.

So, the Great Negotiator gave in to concessions with North Korea, including a major gift to China in eliminating our South Pacific military training (that was a major bargaining chip with the Chinese), on the "hopes" a ruthless bloodthirsty third-generation authoritarian dictator who is considered a deity by his people will honor a handshake? Fuck, even in the written agreement, North Korea gave no concessions other than reiterating a promise they have never kept. But, Trump talks tough about jailing political rivals and media who cover him negatively, so he must be strong, and since he is strong, this must be the greatest deal ever negotiated.

Law is an extremely elitist profession and Kavanaugh is an elitist’s elitist. He’ll get confirmed easily, probably even with some Democratic votes. He went to the right schools and has the right manners and social connections which will get him “bipartisan” support from the legal profession, regardless of the consequences of his appointment. Had Barrett been the pick, there would’ve have at least been some token resistance as she got her law degree at Notre Dame (god forbid) and not Yale or Harvard.

But what if...it ends up being true.

(To be clear, I don't mean to say I support this because I am out on pretty much all decisions...i just mean...the bar is SOOOOO low, that nominating someone who seems to at least be qualified may actually end up being the best thing to come out of all this.)

Why is it always suggested that the Democrats act in good will? Why should the Democrats compromise?
Is he afraid that Trump would find a more radical judge if this one was rejected?

I wish they could somehow block the appointment until after the midterms, win the Senate and have Schumer look at McConnell and tell him that Trump doesn't get a justice until after the 202 election unless he nominates Merrick garland

Don't hold your breath on winning the Senate. Even with a "Blue Wave" election, the Senate is a very steep hill, as there are more Dem seats at risk than Republican seats this year. The House should be winnable, though.

I wouldn't even say that. Because of gerrymandering, Dems would have to win nationwide by about 10 points.

Because to my cynical eye, that story stinks last last week's fish...
