Not that it wasn’t already clear but is there any doubt that racism is the defining principle of Trump’s politics?

They only made up a defense for that because segments of his base cared. Who in his base (or the Republican base) won't shrug this off?

If anyone is counting on his core support base of 30 percent or so giving up on him, don't bother, but this DOES further drive away potential GOP voters in the midterms and 2020. As will the next time he says something stupid and the next time, etc. Right up until election day.

Yeah - at some level, in a country where tens of millions of people are 2nd and 3rd generation Americans, the term "shithole countries" has to resonate.

This Reddit comment really sums it up:
The President of the United States is an angry old retiree who lives in Florida and does nothing but watch Fox News and bitch about black and brown people all day.
And it's so true of so many aggrieved white people I've met while living stateside. They say and do the same exact thing. He is his base.

What I find hilarious is that swear words on tv seem to have a more resonant effect than actual actions time and time again.

Yet his base won't see how this is racist. It's gotten to the point where this is the conversation:

Trump Supporter: "I hate black people."
Liberal: "That's racist."
Trump Supporter: "Stupid Libtards, anyone who disagrees with them must be a racist."

Certainly agree with you on the latter two responses. Realistically though, very few of those folks would be so crass (and honest) as to say, "I hate black people". It's more commonly just casual racism in their everyday observations and opinions that they don't even recognize as being racist.

The difficult thing for the media is finding something good to say about him, because there isn't a hell of a lot good there.

The media really needs to not give a fuck at all about finding positive things about a president. It needs to consider the context and report on what is happening. It's important to remember the basis for cognition is what, 30-50 years? Let's have some First Amendment love up in this bitch!

And one of my favorites, Former Congressman Jack Kingston makes the argument I expected from internet trolls. "If Donald Trump were racist, we would know it by now! Where are the lawsuits?" Umm, didn't he lose major lawsuits for discriminatory practices in the past? If you aren't aware of the history of the Central Park Five, that is a fascinating and disgusting look into Trump's soul.

I clearly picked the wrong day to decide to watch TV! I'm watching YouTube clips and it appears like CNN said "Fuck it, we're doing it live."

Trump really needs to be referred to as "Failing, racist piece of shit president" professionally in all settings from here on out, honestly.

Apologies, I'm fully with you guys now. The media should absolutely bash him. Trump's performance this week was a disgrace. From the tweets to the daca meeting to shit hole to everything. I have often said the media shouldn't pick on him to galvanize the other side. But for me finally the line has been crossed.

I’m sorry I missed this last night. My father (lives in Palm Beach Gardens, FL) mentioned to me before the election he basically plays a round with a Donald Trump every time he golfs at his country club. Sprinkle in financially well off and that’s basically the majority of every foursome my dad’s golfed in since Obama took office.

Actually, it overlooks the remarkably kleptocratic portion of his presidency. There's probably other stuff, too, but "pissing away America's place in the world" is kind of in the same line as that comment, as it deals with foreigners, as well.

To me, the problem with Trump's quote wasn't really "shithole," it was "Norway."

As in, he's comparing black immigrants and white immigrants and saying "Why can't we get more white people?"

Right, but I think most people got that either way. He's not exactly Ted Cruz or Rand Paul when is comes to using coded racist language.
