Not sure if I posted in here before or if anyone already recommended these ones (too lazy to look) but when I work alone, all I listen to are podcasts, my three favourite are Nerdist, Dinner Party Download, and Sklarbro Country.

Re: Podcasts
I have and found it interesting, as well, mostly because I didn't have to listen to all the testimony that was cited. It seems that lawyers should but a little more energy in discrediting things jurors are likely to accept as absolutes.degenerasian wrote:Have you guys heard Episode 5? That said, the way the podcast is structured is to have all these twists and turns, stopping at certain points when you lean one way, then the next episode taking you down a different path. You don't know who to believe, who to trust, why the police act the way they do, etc.
The whole thing is fascinating because it is understandable if you change your opinion on Adnan's guilt during/after each episode.

Just noting that we were on the front edge of what has turned into a bit of a phenomenon... There are now multiple podcasts about this podcast. Interestingly, the notoriety of the show seems to have brought out a bit of a backlash, particularly around dehumanizing/sensationalizing the victim, her family and others caught up in the story.degenerasian wrote:Have you guys heard Episode 5? Oh, also interesting is that this episode was singled out by many as being an example of just how hard it is to tell an audio story with regards to this kind of detail... The cell towers and where they were trying to debunk the state's timeline were both screaming out for an infographic/map in motion type treatment.

Tomorrow's episode should be interesting. It's about how the defense lawyer fucked up the case.
The last episode Adnan expressed how frustrating it was for him to not testify in his own defense. We'll hear why that decision was made.

Just the one question I have: is this a case that was definitively solved, with the episodes leading to a clear ending, or is it something that is going to wind up open-ended?

Sorry, I missed this question. No, and that's a big part of the anxiety/angst a lot of listeners have about the show and the format. What This American Life produces, typically, are stories (acts) that have some type of resolution. This show has a lot of the same formulation, but... They have no idea, really, where it's all headed.
Without throwing around a lot of spoilers, you can see signs of where it is *probably* going... But they are 10 episodes in, with 2, maybe 3 left and we really aren't all that close to any kind of "wrap up" episode.
And this has a ton of people ready to explode. I love the show, but I understand why a lot of people are frustrated with certain aspects of it. I think people are being overly critical of a show that is breaking some new ground, but that's coming from a guy that is as interested in HOW they are telling the story as much as I am interested in how it all turns out.

I think Sarah (the narrator/investigator) has been thrown off track. She's gone from thinking this was an interesting case, to thinking he's innocent to thinking he's a psychopath. I believe that at the beginning she thought she would find facts that would exonerate him but in fact it's even more complicated. Everything from muddled facts, to people calling her out of the blue to reddit. Perhaps there will an update in the last episode about if there will be a new appeal or not.

I think you may have misinterpreted that last episode. The fact that she trotted out that expert and he basically said, "eh, beats me" is somewhat of a response to all those folks pointing to him being a psychopath.degenerasian wrote:yeah it will have no resolution.Nonlinear FC wrote:Johnny Carwash wrote:Thinking of starting up Serial based on the buzz, but want to keep myself as unspoiled as possible so I haven't read the comments above too closely.

And that letter being how she ends the episode is pretty much a direct response / rebuttal / explanation as to why he isn't calling anyone out (Jay, his lawyer, Jenn, etc.) and why he's purposely trying to be be measured and to not come off as manipulating.
Let me back up a minute. She dove into this because a person close to Adnan explicitly told her that he was innocent. Obviously, she had to come at it with a healthy amount of skepticism, but you can clearly tell from the jump that this was why she took it on. Regardless of how things have played out, don't forget that the relatively objective Innocence Project folks very quickly surmised that on straight legal issues, the state's case was riddled with holes and they were very surprised it went to trial, let alone was enough to convict him.
I could write a ton on this, but I'll just say this: I've seen a number of explanations that point to Jay, very viable and credible explanations as to where Adnan was and what was going on with that cell phone. While we won't have a resolution next week, I'm pretty sure some plausible explanations and alternative scenarios are going to be lined up. And, again, we haven't heard a peep out of the Innocence Project folks... I'd be shocked if their future plans for this case don't play a primary role in the finale.

Re: Podcasts
Thanks for the Proops, tried it and liked it. I've always thought he was funny.
But I am loving the Dan Carlin. I plowed through WW I, and now I am checking daily for part V. I not trying to deconstruct the reasons why I enjoy him so much, but I stumbled on something in listening to #49, on the Spanish-American War. I disagree pretty strongly with one of his main themes of that period, that Americans suffered (or continues to suffer) a weird schizophrenic conflict between high ethical values and a longing for empire and/or glory in war. But, despite my actively listening to challenge his premise, I did not detect any shading or cherrypicking of material to make his point, much less presenting any inaccurate or grossly twisted information. (This is in contrast to seeing Doris Kerns Goodwin on TV this weekend, grossly mangling the history of Teddy Roosevelt to fit her point of view.)
Not only presenting the material straight, he included other schools of thought on the same point and on similar issues, comparing the New Left/Howard Zinn pov contrasted with Max Boot/Neocon approaches to imperialism. Honestly fair and balanced, plus he caused me to think about it from his side of the discussion.
Anyway, I'm plowing though a dense history of Russia, and was reminded how little I have learned about Genghis Khan and the Mongols. So, that's next, Wrath of the Khans, parts I to V.
This might get me into regular podcast listening. I tried Maron for a while, but found him too long-winded, then his TV show came along and I just watch that. But this could get me to change my habits.

Howard, I should have expanded on my recommendation as to why I wanted to recommend it to you. Between Proops spending his formative years in San Carlos (other Swamper alert, but you're a transplant, so...), his Giants fandom, and his political talk, I felt this was definitely in your wheelhouse.
