Changed his story compared to the other 4 versions of his story? I find the interview genuine though because he's just remembering (or mis-remembering) stuff from 15 years ago. It doesn't seem like he went back over the facts and studied up for this interview. I think this is closer to the truth than during the trial when he was protecting people, was in cahoots with the police where his story had to match evidence and the defense was so shitty that the 2nd jury found Adnan guilty.

Amazing how police worked at all before DNA testing. If this happened today, they could lift prints off of Hae's car (Steering Wheel, Rear View Mirror, Trunk etc...) . GPS would track that car anywhere I think.

I don't, at all, buy into the idea that Jay is being genuine in this interview. It is riddled with inconsistencies that seem pretty clear are attempts to rebut things brought up in Serial. He stated on his since-deleted Facebook account that the thought the show was crap.

Finished Serial today. Need to go back through and read y'all's comments. In the end, there are just way too many unlucky coincidences for me to believe Adnan is innocent. OTOH, There are a million things unresolved showing a reasonable doubt. I come to the same conclusion as Koenig, I don't think he is innocent, but there is no way he should have been convicted based on the evidence. It is always depressing hearing what swayed a jury, and probably worse for civil cases. I'd wager that very few jurors make their decisions based on the actual law, but rather on emotional grounds, getting hung up on something irrelevant, or just because they don't like one of the attorneys or parties to the trial.

It did. We in Canada learn mostly about Vimy and Passchendaele due to the Canadian contributions so the podcast got to the point that we're most familiar with. Horrors in the mud is the common name for the two Passchendaele battles.

I had no idea that the Czar fell due to public revolting. I always thought Lenin did it.

So far he's finished the English Revolution and American Revolution. Currently on the French Revolution.

I've started Serial based on the discussion here, and I've ignored the comments to keep an open mind. I'm halfway through, and I have three thoughts:

1. There's nothing here so far that convinces me that a jury making a reasoned verdict of guilty is a wildly inaccurate result.

2. The piano and especially the host are irritating as fuck. For someone who is an investigative reporter, she seems gullible.

3. That second point is making me consider dumping it and looking at the prior 6 episodes as a sunk cost.

I'll take your recommendations. Is it worth finishing? Because I really have my doubts.

I thought it was worthy, but if you aren't into it halfway through, I don't see why that would change. I found it compelling. While I would not say Adnan is innocent, how can you not see reasonable doubt? You've heard enough to see the State's case doesn't add up.

Anyone catch the Men in Blazers give a shout out to the Pentz? They were discussing the best (or was it worst?) team names and threw out South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers. Rog claimed to be their QB. I hope ol' Five Sides listens. Man, he hasn't stopped by in years! And what about Prof Bill? I miss his economic philosophy battles with Howard that I couldn't understand. I just liked reading Hayek and thinking about boobs.

If you don't like Koenig, I would've bailed long ago. A lot of folks agree with you, in terms of she handles Sayed.

And to show you what an incredible dork I am, I went back and read her Balt Sun articles that she wrote about the disbarment of Adnan's first lawyer (Gutierez)... To say she was charitable in how she covered that story is a bit of an understatement.

I think she has a tough time putting the screws to people. Someone else covering this story would've gone a lot further in how they painted Jay Wilds, for example... I'll leave it there, in case you want to keep listening.

I'll say this. I find it entertaining. It's certainly intersting to me seeing how evidence is pulled together to make a case.

I'm solely, though, looking at this as entertainment. I'm not moved by Adnan's story as if it's some gross miscarraige of justice. Like I said, I heard nothing yet that would convince me the jury's verdict is patently wrong. At the end of the 6th episode is where I turned on the host. She's talking with Adnan and at one point, he comes off almost exasperated why she's so convinced by him. To which I verbally replied "white guilt"... on SEPTA train full of commters.

Fuck it. I'll gut it out.

have you heard the Slate Serial Spoiler Podcast? Starting after Episode 5 there was a podcast to analyze the Serial podcast.

I had not listened to Carlin's other podcast, which handles current events. I am sick of my own political opinions, so I am hesitant to listen to someone elses for an hour at a time. But I clicked on his most recent - "Reigniting the Cold War". Pretty, pretty good. Not surprisingly, he brings history to analysis of current bullshit. Likened Putin to some aspects of Reagan, which is brilliant (and had not occurred to me.) Quoted Hitchens and Pat Buchannan. Smart dude, good insights.

Since we let Serial fade away into the ether, I stumbled onto "Undisclosed: The State vs, Adnan Syed" through the A/V Club. It is put out in part by the Adnan Syed Legal Trust, so you can easily see the bias of the podcast. I will make these statements, though:

The audio quality of the podcast makes me wonder why the hosts thank their sound mixer after each episode.

There are a lot of lazy or, worse, bad police officers and lawyers.

I could not have been more wrong. They are killing me releasing special pods every other day between the U-20s, FIFA indictments and Seth Bladder resignation. I am trying to finish a 35 disk book here! I am hoping to hear a happy, optimistic Roger, but I don't know if that is possible.

If you get past the first 2 episodes, things get a lot better. Well, until they put out an Addendum with an interview over Skype and it sounds like ass.

But mostly they've sorted things out at this point.

Simon Winchester's River at the Center of the World gives a good back of the napkin Chinese history. It's a book though, not a podcast. And obviously won't be as in depth as these are I am sure.
