There's been new info in Season 1 with more dives and found bone fragments.Nonlinear FC wrote:degenerasian wrote:Season finale next week.Nonlinear FC wrote:CBC's "Someone Knows Something" has me hooked. Documentary film-maker asked by CBC to start a series and the first case he tackles is a cold case of a missing boy from 1972. Maybe its the setting (Ontario Valley) and/or the accents... But I suspect it's the way he tells the story, but I plowed through 8 episodes yesterday while doing yard work.
My only gripe is that the episodes clock in around 35 minutes and seem short to me. Not really a criticism that the time seems to fly by while I'm listening.
Sounds like the divers ran into a dead end.
This is the danger of these "podcast in real time" vehicles. It was, ultimately, just a pretty depressing look at a family that lost a family member 40 years ago. I mean, I found the episodes around the cadaver dogs interesting. And there seems like a genuine lead in terms of that fancy car and the group camping nearby.
But, if all we get is.. "This is hard... Sorry."
Yuck.
Meanwhile Season 2 is maybe the most fucked up story I've ever heard. 29 year old girl with a shady past goes missing. All her ex husbands knew each other or were related. All her ex-husbands ex-wives knew each other. A crazy ride so far.

If you've seen "La La Land" (and if not...what the hell are you waiting for? Its great!), the composer of the music is on the "Song Exploder" podcast, breaking down the climatic song "Audition". Pretty cool stuff...

The Undisclosed folks (OG in the true crime podcasting realm) seem to have done it again. And in a weird twist, it looks like cell phone towers are the key. Only this time, it's proving where the cell phone could not have made a call, which happens to prove there was no way he was at the murder scene.
My issue is that we are at episode 21(!) when this is revealed and I have a strong suspicion they've been sitting on this bombshell for quite some time.

This episode of This American Life was great.

The last portion reminded me of one of my own: Since I grew up in Boston and the Celtics were a team that seemed to, in my young 4-5 year old mind, give respect to the Irish of Boston and be on tv all the time, I figured that the Notre Dame Fighting Irish college, which was in the same boat, was located in Boston -- plus my grandpa owned a jacket of theirs. It wasn't until I was about 14 when watching a game that they mentioned South Bend, Indiana and I happened to be paying attention when I realized that Notre Dame was nowhere near Boston. Tangentially, I always figured Northwestern was in Washington since Northeastern was in Boston. I found out as a senior in high school that it was in Chicago because my history teacher graduated from there.

The Keepin' It 1600 guys from The Ringer started a new media company called Crooked Media and have a new podcast called Pod Save America. The 5th podcast in on their new platform and Barack Obama is their guest. It's a cute walk down memory lane, but eh. It's on the eve of the inauguration, so it's just some simple fanboy stuff, but still. It's their 5th podcast, so pretty good for that.

I'll hype "Crimetown " again. Super podcast.
And "50 things that made the modern economy" from the BBC is good. Nice bite sized nuggets of history.

Re: Podcasts
I cued it up this morning, thinking I will probably not enjoy it as much because I know the topic so well. I've read a ton on the missile crisis and a fair amount on the early Cold War period. But in the first hour, (I was late to work cuz I was enthralled) he tossed out five or six facts I was completely unaware. (Bertrand Russell's consideration of the logic of a first strike; details of Truman's meeting with Oppenheimer; Bernard Baruch's speech before the brand-new UN.) As well, as usual, he offers angles very different from my way of looking at a particular event or situation.
Funny how today two members of congress offered a bill requiring the president get a declaration of war before launching a first strike; this presidential power is one of the points raised in Carlin's first hour. The past continues to haunt the present.

My favorite remains "Blueprint for Armageddon".
I've got "Ghosts of the Ostfront" downloaded if you want me to send it to you. Though if you like it, I'd humbly ask you donate a few bucks on his website, as I paid for that particular series and I feel pretty strongly about supporting Carlin's work. Just let me know.
Others that get high marks are "Death Throes of the Republic" which I haven't listened to and "Wrath of the Khans" which I have and is also fantastic. Between B4A, WotK, and Ghosts, you're looking at a solid 50 hours of listening to get you started.

Re: Podcasts
Remarkable interview. Peterson can get a little over-heated at times, but intellectually he just nails the identity politics/SJW mindset and its psychological underpinning. I particularly liked this exchange:
Rogan: "You're one of the first people that are sounding an alarm. That there's a real issue with controlling people. There's a real issue with controlling dialog, controlling the way people communicate. And that these ideologies, although seemingly innocuous, they can take you down very dangerous roads."
Peterson: "Yes well, seemingly innocuous ideology. Those words do not go together. There are no innocuous ideologies. They're all forms of pathological oversimplification... The advantage to me being in ideologue is I can explain everything. I can feel morally superior. And I know who my enemies are."

Yea, this went off the rails at points and I actually end up feeling bad for Crowder because Rogan is way too aggressive about pot. Especially in light of Crowder specifically saying he had his opinion on pot but was ultimately indifferent and didn't want to argue, but Rogan sucked him in and made him open up...then constantly condescended him. It got cringey.

"Missing Richard Simmons" has - so far - been very interesting.
The concept sounds stupid - TV producer and sort of friend of Richard Simmons tries to figure out exactly why SImmons hasn't been seen in 3 years - but after three episodes, it is getting very strange.

I've been a big Gimlet fan from Day 1 when they pushed out Start-Up. I'm still very much enjoying Crimetown and Reply All, but there have been some stumbles. They kind of messed up with how canceling Mystery Show, which had a pretty big following. Science VS is very hard for me to listen - I don't like the host and the topics can get pretty boring (IMO). They canceled another show called Undone after what I assume was poor d/l numbers. And they canceled another show (can't remember the name) that was essentially a pretty cool "best of the podcast world" show.
Homecoming is still out there, waiting for the next season to drop. But they are in a weird place right now. There was a window not too long ago when I could hit them up for 2 or 3 quality shows a week. Right now, Crimetown and Reply All are the only shows producing fresh content, and they seem to be going on breaks frequently.
