It's pretty good. Tells of the story in the '40's when members of Congress were Nazi sympathizers and tried to spread propaganda and use it for power.
Not yet, thanks for the reminder, heard it’s really good.

Is anyone listening to 22 Goals as a lead up to the World Cup?

The recent episode about Johan Cruyff was great.

Will need to listen. Cruyff was my dad's hero growing up. He bet and lost 2 months pay on the 74 final.

The rambling weird stories in 22 Goals makes the story telling unique.

The Weird Place
New Dana Carvey podcast where he went for a humor twilight zone concept that is really a chance for him to do his voice/character work. Wrote it with his kids (trying to be writers/comedians). Good idea, but needs some work. Will stick with it. Bar for podcasts is very low. But just because you can does not mean you are going to be good at it even with good guests(i.e Kenny Mayne, Justin Long). Bar for podcasts with your kids when you are famous...nearly unachievable (Odenkirk's was not that good either).

I might check it out, but I'm getting my fill of his schtick with the Fly on the Wall podcast with David Spade.

I listened to Justin Long's podcast for a pretty long time until I just kind of... didn't. Hard to really put my finger on where things went wrong (for me) with that podcast, I just kind of tired of his overall being. He seems like a really sweet guy, I just didn't find a lot of the interviews all that compelling.

This podcast has been a good find. The hosts are pretty funny and the stories are great.

I’ve never heard a podcast with such great guests have such horrible interviews. Carvey has no idea how to have a conversation. He tries to turn everything into a bit. He goes into stories and then stops because he doesn’t know if they are any good. Frustrating. I’d listen to Spade do the interviews, he has a good flow, but Carvey seems lost.

Completely agree. I love the idea of the show, and when it's Spade telling or eliciting stories out of guests, it's fantastic. Carvey's impersonations were tolerable and occasionally funny at first, but it's like he is incapable of a conversation. Makes me wonder if he acts like that in real life.

The Chevy Chase interview was fascinating... Because it was an hour-long car wreck. Just a weird vibe and the conversation was almost impossible to follow.

I'm a nerd about SNL. I want the show to be good and the guests are (mostly) pretty amazing, but... It's just not good.

I'm kind of bummed that two of my childhood comedy heroes are kind of turning into assholes in their waning years. Or, really more accurately with both of them, they've been assholes all along but have been increasingly called out for it.

Sorry, talking about Bill Murray and Chevy.

Especially Murray. I've now heard over a dozen different stories (Lucy Liu and Richard Dreyfus this week... not that the stories came out, but that I heard them.) He's perfectly lovely and generous to perfect strangers, but abusive and totally shitty (and erratic) on set.

Murray surprises me. I've heard lots of the random stories of how he is cool hanging out with random strangers, and my high school friend did crew work on Royal Tennenbaums and raved about how cool Murray was, made a point to know everyone's names and talk to everyone. He worked on several movies and said no other actors did that. Didn't have any incidents of stars being mean, but just kept a distance from the crew. Maybe Murray is just more comfortable with the public than celebrities?

I don't really claim to have inside/personal knowledge. The stories of him just popping into a wedding and being incredible with perfect strangers at bars/restaurants/airports are legendary. And they are legion, which... I've often wondered about his mental state, quite frankly. Like... Does he have a crew of friends? It's just a bit weird that he's just randomly showing up at things all the time.

I think he's a high functioning alcoholic who is prone to pretty egregious behavior when he's lit. The Dreyfus story is definitely a case of him being in the tank and "confronting" Dreyfus with some nonsense. It's also probably true that Dreyfus was rubbing Murray the wrong way... Dreyfus is a conceded butt head in his own right... But throwing a glass ashtray at someone from 6 paces is beyond.

And the Lucy Liu story that surfaced sure felt like she could say more and is holding back. She was talking about being an Asian actress in the business and while she didn't come straight out and point to that as part of the undercurrent, it was strongly suggested by context. In any event, she was the least powerful actress on that set and had nothing to do with what set him off (changes to the script.)... A very shitty thing to do (berate her in front of the cast and crew with very shitty language) regardless of who she was in the pecking order.

But he's immediately the most famous person in nearly every room he's in. So he is just doing his thing, the other people are random.

I've had the same thought, that it seems like bizarre behavior and what drives a celebrity to walk into a random house party for an hour or show up at events strangers invite him to. In one way it seems cool, and he intentionally gives people a great story to tell then slips away, but in another sense it makes him seem like a disturbed or depressed person desperate for human interaction. Maybe he just hates celebrity events and socializing and wants to get outside that world. I've also heard he can only be contacted by a voice message box and industry types can't speak with him. Leave a message and never know if he even got it. Hadn't heard the Dreyfus or Liu stories, or any negatives, so I have no comment on them.

Skip to the 6 minute mark (there abouts) for Dreyfuss.

This is the best I could find on a short search for Liu: https://deadline.com/2021/07/lucy-liu-a ... 234801186/

It's also important to note that the incident with Liu was reported at the time as her being difficult, not Murray being an asshole. The reason that's important is that I think a LOT of stuff prior to the Me Too movement was handled this way, and it's why Hollywood is such a shitty place. They've been doing that to women as long as the industry has been around.

I mean, it reflects society, but it seems particularly toxic when it comes to not just covering up for men, but vilifying women who speak out.

Okay not what I would could "good" but definitely entertaining. They ended up on my instagram feed through the magic of algorithm with the backoff challenge. Perfect little bit of enjoyment. Then I went down the youtube rabbit hole. Funny press conference questions, a podcast on why Tin Cup is a Bad Movie, they just hit me in the right way at the right time. Similar stupid to AFE (maybe a JV when compared).

SNAFU with Ed Helms is VERY entertaining.

Talking about a military exercise that almost caused a nuclear holocaust in 1983. It came out 9 months after War Games...

I'm only on Ep1, but it's well produced and written.

I listened to the whole series, I was planning on recommending it,
[+] spoiler
but in the end, it was inconclusive and kind of pointless.
I still enjoyed it, and there were a lot of interesting tidbits and forays into stories about specific spies that were interesting. In a bit of a coincidence, the podcast discussed KGB double agent Oleg Gordievsky quite a bit, and right when I finished the podcast, a book came in on my library waitlist about Gordievsky. I hadn't realized I was waiting for a book about the same spy. [Ben McIntyre's The Spy and the Traitor. While I absolutely loved all of the other McIntyre books I've read, this one was really boring me and it returned before I finished it.]

In an epilogue episode, Ed Helms interviewed Jack Barsky, a KGB spy who defected to the US. I found him really interesting, so I am now listening to his memoir "Deep Undercover, My Secret Life and Tangled Allegiances as a KGB Spy in America." Barsky (his fake US identity) was an East German college student recruited by the KGB and sent to live as an American in the US, in the same program portrayed in the TV series The Americans. I'm surprised how much from the show was actually real, but the assignments were far less frequent and less interesting.

Anyways, the podcast is interesting as it described a lot about the Soviet system and how it encouraged spies and military intelligence to make insignificant things seem vital and their belief that Reagan was a super-powerful evil person hell bent on destroying the Soviet Union. In part because Reagan's tough guy rhetoric and labelling them the Evil Empire. Sort of ironic that Reagan desperately wanted peace and denuclearization with the Soviets, and took a tough talking stance to intimidate them, and almost ended up causing a nuclear war because of his rhetoric.

That's what got me into it.

It's kind of funny (to me) that I was never really into Conan's talk show*, but I haven't missed one of his podcasts since he first started it up. I love the supporting folks (Chill Chums) and he does a pretty good job with the longer form interviews. I actually think he could go longer, but appreciate that he's keeping it tight.

* - I fell off of watching late night talk shows in my 20s. I started "watching" him again via YouTube clips more recently. I also really like when he visits foreign countries.

Even more impressive is his ability to drag other people into his stupid improv bits. I find it funny, but I believe him when he says he does that constantly in real life, and it must drive his family crazy. I watched him when he first came on, not regularly, but probably Friday nights when I came home drunk in high school and occasionally in college. Late night shows are so much better watching clips on Youtube, because the majority of the time is just filler. Gotta be damned hard filling an hour 5 nights a week. I've also been listening to almost every episode, including the listener call in shows. I love hearing random fans from all over the globe call in and instantly have a great rapport with Conan and crew, usually in the form of making fun of Conan.

Just finished a Crooked Media production called Mother Country Radicals, which was REALLY interesting. Focused on the Weathermen Underground, along with the Black Panthers and the Black Liberation Army.

The reporter/podcaster is Zayd Dhorn, who is the son of one of the founders/leaders Bernadine Dhorn. She is married to another WU luminary, Bill Ayers. You might remember his association with Obama was used by Hillary and then in the general to try and paint Obama as a radical leftie. (They knew each other from living and socializing in some of the same circle in Chicago.)

Anyways, it's a 10 Ep deep dive into the origins and eventual dismantling of radical underground -- 1960s all the way to present.

I didn't know a lot of the details, and the interviews are pretty interesting. It gets REALLY personal, especially at the end when the folks involved grapple with having kids in that context.

Good call out. I've always been fascinated with the politics of the late 60s and the WU is always discussed, but I never knew all that much. Such a fascinating way to learn about them by airing interviews with members and Blank Panthers who worked with the WU. Gave a great history of the organization, including the ugly aspects of the internal politics (it turned into a cult with deep shaming sessions). In addition to the history, some fascinating stories about how living on the FBI most wanted list effected the lives of the members.

I listened to 2 Bears, 1 Cave with Tom Segura and Bert Kreisher because they had porn superduperstar Adriana Chechik on.

And I gotta say...I fucking hate the podcast because Bert just does not shut the fuck up. The constant interruptions which lead to meaningless tangents is insufferable. Several times Chechik was like "let me finish the story..." after he kept bringing the story back to him.

My guess as to why he's like this? Only child. My cousin, also an only child, does this shit too. You're mid-sentence, trying to complete your thought, and he just adds his 2 cents, brings the story back to him, and then says "and continue your story" when he's done. To this day I am convinced the reason my brother (50 yo) never married is because he just will not shut the fuck up. It's like he cannot listen and when he gets called out on it, instead of talking out loud he begins to talk to himself. It's as if he lost his ability to listen. He wasn't like this as a kid, either. He grew into that inability.

Several times I just went, "I don't remember what I was talking about. It clearly wasn't important." I had a semi freak out when I went on a road trip with him recently.

Only child here. And I get why you'd say this. But not all of us spend the night dominating the conversation. I love a good story.

I work with someone who is like that and she is not an only child. We had one of my remote employees from Florida in the office one time and we've all worked with him for years, most of it in the Houston office. He started telling this amazing story about how he searched for and found his biological father and she interrupted him to bring up some story from her life she thought was similar and interesting, and it just wasn't.

I used to listen to Bert's solo podcast as he had a lot of interesting guests, and I listened to 2 Bears when they started it. I'll periodically go back when I am out of episodes on my subscribe list, but one or two episodes and I'm sick of Bert. I do love Tom and the way they play off each other, but Bert is exhausting. 99% sure Bert has a sister, I think he talks about her a bunch. I remember some sort of story about Bert ruining her birthday party. He is just incredibly insecure and needy.

I was actually chatting with a friend last night about my cousin and his consistent need to do this. She said it probably wasn't an only child thing, but more of a narcissistic thing. I can certainly understand that since one cannot say with 100% certain that "all [X] are [Y] because of [Z]."

So yea. Glad you understood what I mean and didn't take offense.

See, I googled before I made that post and it came back with no siblings on a couple websites. So if he has a sister, then I'm just dead wrong.

He's probably just a narcissist.

This Tweet screams narcissist... I don't think he is a narcissist either, just incredibly insecure and maybe a little ADHD and can't keep his mouth shut for 5 seconds. Definitely has issues with anxiety, too.

Bill Burr voice.

D'oh jeeeeezussssss.

Anyhoo, yup. Wrong about that. I guess I formulated that thought of "only children" based on Bill Simmons. He does that thing where he cuts you off too. It's a little too anecdotal and certainly not representative of everyone.
