Because I can't find a "Radio" thread

. . . this will have to do.

Poking around for archived complete broadcasts of baseball games and I found this:

" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There are 14 games there, appearing to be complete, and you can pick them out individually or download a 700 MB Zip file that has 'em all. Or just stream them off of that site. Currently listening to an MP3 of the 1959 World Series Game 1 (Dodgers at White Sox). That would be the "Go-Go Sox". And it sounds great! Better than most of the files I'm picking off of YouTube (thanks to the sweet link Bronto provided). The between-innings commercials are tremendous.

Those games are from between 1948 and 1967. Included is the inaugural Mets game, a classic All Star game and a number of World Series games.

Taking this a step further, I downloaded/installed a program called "Any Video Converter"; I'm typically skeptical of those programs since they tend to be buggy, are prone to installing unwanted junk (or worse), have pop-up ads, can hijack file-associations or even browsers, and so on. This one, fortunately, does none of that. Although you have to pay strict attention during install as it will ask you to continue while a box is checked on the install screen to "also install" some unusual thing you don't want. But sure to uncheck it.

Getting to the point. I wanted to download YouTubia vids and turn them into DVDs; specifically classic baseball games and maybe, later on, some other sporting classics from boxing and whatnot. That program does everything; it downloads the vids (take your pick WEBM, FLV, some smaller thing), converts the YouTubia files and then burns the DVD for you.

And, no, you various pervs, it doesn't work on the Pr0n vid sites, just YouTube. But it does a spiffy job; so far I made nice little box-sets of the 1978 and 1980 World Seriesiz.

There is an amazing amount of full-length stuff on YouTubia, ranging from movies to docs to events such as concerts and sporting goodies; typically things you would rather watch via your DVD player on a nice television as opposed to the postcard-or-smaller little box on your computer's monitor or device. And you don't get a stream that can be choppy or buffering when you've made a DVD of it. YouTube can be cranky depending on your ISP.

ETA: Oh, forgot to mention, you can convert the YouTube vids into dozens of different formats; files for iStuff, Android, xbox, you name it and it's likely one of the options.

Anyone have a recommendation for a good podcast player on Android?

I have a cracked version of Doggcatcher on my personal phone, but just got a phone through work and would like to have them on that phone as well, state owned phone so don't think an illegal app would be that smart.

I've been using BeyondPod, functionality is pretty good except for a bait-and-switch where the free version updates/downloads all feeds simultaneously and you need to buy the full version ($7) in order to download just one at a time.

I hear good things about Stitcher. But I use an i-device, so have no reason to learn first hand...

Oh it is, just the homos at AOL decided to stop supporting it so it's no longer available on the PlayStore.

If you are a fan of Frightened Rabbit (and if you aren't, what the hell is your problem?), Scott Hutchison, the lead singer/songwriter/guitarist from the group was on the "You Made It Weird" podcast with Pete Holmes last week, and its fantastic. Although after listening to his Scottish accent for almost 2 hours, I think I picked up a bit of a brogue.

I just saw this thread for the first time in quite a while, and have not skimmed all the way through it, but Dan Carlin has a solid set of history podcasts called "Hardcore History".... very in depth and entertaining. His current set of podcasts is on World War I.

Great for drives. It's really more like a long college lecture. I say that because he goes off on tangents about interesting things, but then tries to bring it back to the mainline narrative.

I know I've extolled their virtues on here before, but...

The last 2 episodes of The Crabfeast (with comedians Ryan Sickler and Jay Larson) are some of the funniest podcasts I've ever heard.

Check out the episode with Ms. Pat and the one with Larry Miller.

Seriously, funny funny stuff.

Have you guys heard the American Life spinoff podcast called Serial?

http://serialpodcast.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
In 1999, Hae Min Lee, a senior at Woodlawn High School in Maryland, went missing. When her body was found a month later, Adnan Syed, her ex-boyfriend, was arrested and convicted of strangling her.

Episode one of “Serial,” begins with a prepaid call from an inmate at a Maryland correctional facility. It’s Adnan, 15 years after Hae went missing. He is set to spend the rest of his life in prison for a crime he claims he did not commit.
CBC Interview with the creators

http://www.cbc.ca/q/popupaudio.html?clipIds=2549845659" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

What do you guys think? I got some thoughts after listening to the first three episodes.

I have subscribed to it after hearing the first episode on "This American Life" a couple weeks ago.

Seems like a way to put out stories that would simply be a longer version of "This American Life" episodes. I did appreciate how, after the first episode was nearly an hour, the following two were shorter (I think 36 minutes was the longer of the two) and that includes a brief recap to remind you where the story left off.

So far, I am in.

Not sure how I feel about "guilty/not guilty" and waiting to hear what else comes out (there was a mention of the possibility of blackmail during the "coming up on Serial" tease at the end of the first podcast). The fact that Adnan seems like a very bright individual is not helping me decide, as he often says in phone calls that "I can see how that would be beneficial to me" or similar statements.

I think he did it.

He was possessive, annoying, always paging her. There's the whole rebelling against his family too. And the fact that he keeps saying that that day (Jan 13, 1999) was just any other day, but he asked her for a ride home which makes it abnormal. He'd never do that normally, he has his own car.

There is that blackmail angle coming up and Episode 4 is titled "Inconsistancies". But I think Adnan is more inconsistent than anyone else.

I don't know what to think in terms of guilt or innocence, I'm trying to stay impartial for as long as possible. The streaker guy certainly injected a lot of interesting information... most notably how much the detectives DIDN'T do during the investigation, particularly with evidence found at the scene where the body was found.

I'll tell you this, I need to go find out when they are scheduled to come out, because I'm annoyed every time I check my podcasts and this one isn't updated.

Along a very similar genre line...

http://hearstartup.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Former This American Life and Planet Money reporter Alex Bloomberg is trying to launch a start up, and this podcast chronicles his journey. It's very very good. Comes in under 30 minutes and it just flies by.

Done.

Spoilers below
Jay is odd but I believe him. Even though the story is inconsistent in places but I think as the investigation unfolds, the pieces will fall into place. He's a young guy caught up in something unexpected and didn't know how to react.

I find Adnan's denial worse. Again he says the following:

a) Jan 13 was just a normal day, I don't even remember it being different
b) Jay? Who? I barely know the guy. He works, not into sports, listens to heavy metal.. I think.

Really? Jan 13 was a normal day yet, you give your car and new cellphone to a guy you don't really know and then ask Hae for a ride home. Two events that would never happen on any normal day.

Yeah, nothing seems clearer about Adnan from this episode. But what does seem pretty clear is that Jay knows a lot more about this whole thing than he told police at the time. Look at your point b): To take Jay's story at face value, he basically just let a guy he doesn't all that well give him his car and cell phone. He knew they guy was planning a murder and he didn't go to the police because... drug dealer? He then changes his story at least 3 different times (1st taped interview-->2nd taped interview-->on the stand.) Why change the location of where he saw the body?

There's just something very off about this Jay guy. I'm not saying, at all, that it proves anything about Adnan one way or the other. But it's very strange to me that the detectives let him off the hook for these pretty consequential diversions from the truth.

I agree with NonLinear.

That said, the way the podcast is structured is to have all these twists and turns, stopping at certain points when you lean one way, then the next episode taking you down a different path. You don't know who to believe, who to trust, why the police act the way they do, etc.

Mentioned it on The Ebola thread, but "On The Media" is almost always a really strong, intelligent podcast. A nice antidote not just to the sensationalism and irresponsible media that it reports on, but to the shows that are forced to use humour in order to make fun of the media.

And via the BBC, there's a great archive of their Radio 4 shows about music. The show about the mellotron was really cool.
