In case you are wondering, here's an excerpt from the fictional Aaron Ross Sorkin article reference in the Charlie Rose interview.
It may be charitable to describe Elliott and Gretchen Schwartz as philanthropists.

Last week, the founders of Gray Matter Technologies gave a $28 million grant to create a drug abuse treatment center throughout the Southwest. The family, which is said to be worth more than $1 billion — Gray Matter’s market value is $2.16 billion — was heralded by advocates of drug control and treatment throughout the country. In Washington, the White House’s Office of National Drug Control Policy said in a statement that the Schwartzes are among “the next generation of great American philanthropists tackling one of the biggest epidemics confronting our country: illicit drugs.”

Maybe it is cynical to suggest, but the timing and backstory of the grant is raising red flags among some investors on Wall Street and prompting some to ask: Is the donation a publicity stunt meant to mask troubling news about the company?
There's more at the link....

AMC is airing the entire series every night this week and we had it on in the bedroom last night...needless to say I got about 3 hours of sleep.

It was announced yesterday that Vince Gilligan's next series will air on CBS next fall and be titled "Battle Creek", about two detectives in my hometown of Battle Creek. Crazy.

“Battle Creek” is a drama about two detectives in Battle Creek, Mich. One is a trusting naïf, the other a cynic who relies on guile and deception. They find themselves in competition with an F.B.I. agent whom they see as the epitome of a crime-fighter, though he is far from that.
Sounds dangerously cliched, but with Vince Gilligan and David Shore involved, the banal SHOULD become something amazing.

And isn't Battle Creek the cereal capital of the world?

Yeah, setting a show in Battle Creek could be either genius or disaster. For those of you who know nothing about it, it is the cereal capital of the world. Kellogg is still headquartered there and it's where corn flakes were invented by John Harvey Kellogg and W.K. Kellogg. The story of the creation of the breakfast cereal is actually pretty crazy and full of intrigue and betrayal. A patient of the Kellogg's at the Battle Creek Sanitarium invented his own cereal later -- his name was C.W. Post and that company obviously became Post.

These days, it's a relatively small town in mostly rural western Michigan, with a population of about 80,000 if you include the outlying townships and whatnot. By area, it is actually the third-largest city in Michigan behind Detroit and Grand Rapids.

Not sure if this was covered, but I'll do so now.

Bill Simmons had Peter Berg on his podcast a couple weeks ago and mentioned that Vince Gilligan and Berg had a disagreement over the movie Hancock. (That Will Smith/Charlize Theron movie.)

Basically, Gilligan wrote the script with this as the plot:
Hancock was originally a script called Tonight He Comes, about a superhero alcoholic who could not make love because if he climaxed, he would kill a woman with the power of his climax. And it was really this kind of dark, twisted script.

And the rest of the story is amusing too.

Honest to God, I have anxiety butterflies right now - similar to what I felt the last time the Bills or Browns were in the playoffs.

A thought - will Jesse get the catharsis of being the one to kill Walt?

I'll tell you what..I think most of us thought the ricin was for Lydia and the machine gun for the Nazis. Of course getting the Schwartz's to give Flynn the money was brilliant as well as giving Skyler the coordinates for Hank and Gomez's grave. That scene with him and Skyler was amazing when she looked at him after he admitted that he was doing it for himself, as if it's the first time she heard something honest from him in a long time. I love, love, love that he shot Jack in the head while he was still trying to talk himself out of it. Did anyone else think Walt was either gonna cook one more batch or even smoke some blue before he bled out?

Marty Robbins. El Paso. Felina. Finale. Anagram. Holy shit.

I saddled up and away I did go,
Riding alone in the dark.
Maybe tomorrow
A bullet may find me.
Tonight nothing’s worse than this
Pain in my heart.

...

Something is dreadfully wrong for I feel
A deep burning pain in my side.
Though I am trying
To stay in the saddle,
I’m getting weary,
Unable to ride.

But my love for

Felina is strong and I rise where I’ve fallen,
Though I am weary I can’t stop to rest.
I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle.
I feel the bullet go deep in my chest.

From out of nowhere Felina has found me,
Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side.
Cradled by two loving arms that I’ll die for,
One little kiss and Felina, good-bye.

I was referring to the Marty Robbins cassette in the car Walt stole at the start of the episode. The multiple interpretations (anagram of finale, blood/meth/tears) are also cool.

I was a bit disappointed he didn't dose Gretchen and Elliot with ricin on the handshakes. But, of course, that was unnecessary and would've been gratuitous.

As a happy coincidence, Baby Blue was my favorite song, by far, spring of sophomore year of high school when it was released. (One of producer Todd Rungren's greatest contributions to pop culture.) Perfect choice for the closing scene of the show.

Man, I love great pop music. Blame all the great tunes I grew up with. I don't care how simple, silly, syrupy or lightweight. Love it.

Guess I got what I deserved
Kept you waiting there too long, my love
All that time without a word
Didn't know you'd think that I'd forget
Or I'd regret
That special love I have for you
My Baby Blue

All the days became so long
Did you really think I'd do you wrong
Dixie, when I let you go
Thought you'd realize I would know
I would show
The special love I have for you
My Baby Blue
Who knows? Maybe, you were kidnapped, tied up, taken away and held for ransom.

A fantastic ending - all loose ends tied up and we got the violent release of seeing Uncle Jack's crew dead on the ground (loved that Jesse got to kill Todd).

And Walt died "in the arms" of his true love - in a chemistry lab after finally ensuring that his family would be taken care of.

Fantastic.

What a fucking finale. 8 straight amazing episodes to close out a series.

Everything was just so goddamned perfect. The music. The final scene. The intertwined stories.

This cracks my Top 3 series of all time. The Wire and The Sopranos are my other 2.

But yea...poor Huell. :-(

Ahhhh, that's the stuff. They couldn't have done any better with that last episode. It's hard to end anything that epic and I'm glad they didn't try for any cute twists or reversals. Some may criticize it for being a bit too cheery in the end (if that's possible for a series that ends with a nazi bloodbath and the protagonist dead on a dirty floor), but thank god Jesse caught a break. My only wish was that he would have gotten a pile of cash on the way out.

I need to think about it some more before it really sinks in.
