A half dozen times I’ve gotten self-conscious this should just be in the other thread we made.

Who did BSF take?

I would have enjoyed more songs like Abel. That made me stop working and actively listen to it, if that makes any sense. That song is like the 12th song on that record and it was the first song that made me pay attention. Otherwise, it was just playing in the background as I worked. I enjoyed it, but it didn’t make me need to listen to any other The National albums.mister d wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2018 10:41 pm Yeah, I think that’s the album where The National became a definable and constant sound. Berninger can and does still rip it up in concert but I don’t think they’ve put out anything close to Abel or Mr. November in studio. And when they try, like Turtleneck, ick ...

The Eagles wrote great songs that I can play on guitar, so they've got that going for them.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2018 3:13 pm I mean, I keep banging on this beat, but the Eagles are like the epitome of a group that has put out amazing music, but it's been ground to dust via overplay and to some extent doesn't hold up that well.

For my next pick, I wanted to grab someone who has a big body of work, but is still putting out great music today. So I went with:

That's a great band. Bold choice (and one I would've likely made). It's kinda like Ga Ga Ga Ga in that there really isn't a weak track on the disc. It basically just lifts the disco ball up to the ceiling, turns on the strobe lights and just invites you to boogie down.DaveInSeattle wrote: ↑Sat Feb 17, 2018 1:19 pm For my next pick, I wanted to grab someone who has a big body of work, but is still putting out great music today. Yeah, that might’ve been my favorite LP of 2017. That, or a band’s effort that I’m going to withhold for a while for fear of losing it in the draft.

I've probably posted this before, but the daughter of my wife's best friend from high school and before was the live-in girlfriend of Spoon leader Britt Daniel for about ten years. When they finally broke up a couple years ago, my wife's friend was more bummed out than her daughter was.

Is it weird I borderline can't stand almost all of Eminem's music and Eminem himself but I love 8 Mile?

It's not what I was thinking, but when the best athlete available drops way down the draft board to you, you have to pick him. With that thinking in mind, I'm going with CCR. A bit before my time, but this was the band that first got me interested in the country side of rock and roll. I could listen to John Fogarty sing the telephone book. They had so many hit singles that this is a case where I wish we allowed Greatest Hits packages.

I’ve got one band I’d rather take here on merit but I’ve already lost my top two bands and don’t want to make it all three in case Chedda is a dick.
On some level this is like getting two albums in one without it being a double? I’m Team Dan and I think his best overall album is Expo 86 but this is Spencer’s best and therefore the best overall effort.

CHEDDA is NOT a dick*, and doesn't give AF about Wolf Parade. However, that's because he hasn't given them much of a listen. Looking forward to listening to this.mister d wrote: ↑Sat Feb 17, 2018 7:12 pm I’ve got one band I’d rather take here on merit but I’ve already lost my top two bands and don’t want to make it all three in case Chedda is a dick.

Still smarting after losing out on Marvin Gaye.
So the 4th round is when we take our favorite album right? In that case, this reminds me of playing Super Street Fighter II on SNES, hazing pledges, and wondering when the MLB strike will end.

Re: Swamp Album Draft: Current Pick ***4-17 PDX***
I just listened to The National's Alligator again. And ... I still don't get why this band inspires some of you folks to get so excited. I found the vast majority of the music to be very bland. It mean, it's fine. Good, even. But not memorable or inspiring. I'm glad you guys get so much joy out of it though.
Totally Kafkaesque
Re: Swamp Album Draft: Current Pick ***4-17 PDX***
Great pick. I was torn between Marvin, that album and another choice that is still on the board.

Re: Swamp Album Draft: Current Pick ***4-17 PDX***
I have to admit, I never even considered the Velvets, but yeah, nice pick. I assume this takes Lou Reed off the board, too.

I was split between that and Loaded. Both excellent albums but the tour-de-force of Venus in Furs and the nut-kicking of Heroin were too much to overlook.

Re: Swamp Album Draft: Current Pick ***4-18 J-LO***
Tough point in the draft. Lotsa big popular names left, enough so that I think a few of my essentials will still be available next time around. I'll take:
The quintessential "before their time" band. I'd also argue that this should not take War off the board. (They were already formed before Eric Burdon joined and have a distinctly different sound. Also, black guys from SoCal vs white guys from England.)

There are three hip-hop classics that I'm bouncing between. I decided on this as this poster showed up on a wall in Black Panther. That, and it was the first hip-hop album (cassette to be exact) that I owned, that I got for myself for my 14th birthday in 1988.
