I mostly listen to post-rock/metal and heavier prog stuff, which all kind draw a straight line back to pre-Dark Side Pink Floyd. The Wall, WYWH, and DSOTM, while all brilliant albums (and probably 'better' than Meddle by many metrics), were kind of dead-ends. No new branches of the musical family tree grew out of them.

I wasn't criticizing. Just surprised. But, that explanation certainly makes sense.

Oh no worries. That was the explanation that I didn't have time to type up at initial posting.

That movie is about college guys in 1980. I was a college guy in 1980. And one of my college roommates had that same exact bong.

Both fine choices. I was listening to Animals today.

I’ll third Animals being awesome. I don’t like Meddle quite as much but “One of These Days” is a really great song.

Animals and Meddle are top tier for me.

When I was a stoned teenager, I had everything Floyd put out - and even enjoyed Ummagumma. But now my collection is reduced to a couple of songs from Animals and Meddle.

I'm doing this more strategically, because I'm not sure this artist is making it back to me. So while I'm leaving a number of phenomenal albums on the board, I have to go with Mr. Francis Albert, and his best (or second best, considering In the Wee Small Hours) of the Capitol years:

Revisiting, I think the comp is Joe Thornton? Its not defensible overall by any means, but maybe more defensible than other contemporaries would "should" go sooner? And he has a beard.

The twice in between is what did it for me. Also, curious what album you would have chosen. I gave serious consideration to High Violet and Trouble Will Find Me, and was surprised that I didn't rate Boxer higher for this exercise.

Boxer, no doubt. Its my personal #1 album of all time. If I'm listing out their albums (starting with Alligator), the gap between 1 and 2 is probably greater than any other, unless I'm particularly down on Trouble Will Find Me that day.

I've always said Boxer was my favorite as well, but in looking at the track listing, I felt like Alligator offered a wider range of song styles.

I love how the first album was Led Zeppelin's like 5th or 6th best album (4th if you really love it and are down on III). And then Meddle, by Pink Floyd.

It's like you're trying to be mainstream hipsters.

(BTW, I think Animals is probably my most-listened to Floyd album. I guess that makes it my favorite. I played the hell out of that one while studying in high school.)

Its ups are the best of any album, but there are a handful of downs that qualify as mediocre enough to feel pre-Alligator that it offsets the ones I really like.

So you would have passed on your personal #1 album, knowing there was no chance the band would get back to you, because it wasn't "valuable" enough at #4?
