(I honestly didn't know until now that this came out the same day as Nevermind. What a great era for music. Also, you guys remember when albums were only released on Tuesdays and you'd always be in the know about what was coming out that week?)

BadMotorFinger is infinitely better than Nevermind.

As much as I liked all their contemporaries, Nirvana never really clicked for me. Cobain worship is baffling. (I do like the unplugged album though.)

I think Kobain falls more in the "Transformative talent who had a lot more available but died too young group" with Jimi, Ledger, Len Bias group than "Overrated because he died young" side of the... er... ledger like Pac, Morrison, James Dean, and Reggie Lewis. I go back and forth on JFK.


ETA: Thinking about it, calling Ledger "transformative" is a stretch. Really fucking talented yes, but that might be a little much. Maybe Philip Seymour Hoffman in that first group instead.

Nonlinear FC would like to request a point of order from the Commissioner and/or his appointed counsel. (Not sure why we're suddenly under Robert's Rules, but whatever.)

Let's say an artist is a renowned song-writer. Let's say he's put out over a dozen albums with the vast majority consisting of songs he's penned. But, let's say your favorite original track lands on an album that consists almost entirely of duets of songs that are not that artists original music?

This pick wouldn't come up for quite some time, just in terms of urgency. (My next pick is up today, most likely, but this question doesn't need to be dealt with for probably a month, given the fucking glacial pace.)

I'll hang up and listen to the answer on air.

You see I don't necessarily buy he was a transformative talent at that point in time. He was a really good songwriter. He wasn't Bob Dylan. Probably a tick or two below Neil Young. What set him into the 'transformative' stratosphere is how FM radio reacted to Nirvana's music by nuking hair bands off the radio. It was more a middle finger to Guns n Roses and Motley Crue than it was artistic mettle, IMHO..

Here's where I have a problem with Nirvana: I wasn't listening to hair bands anyway. I was a DJ at my college radio station. So I kinda viewed this from the outside looking in the entire time. They were a fun band to have in the rotation, but there was nothing earth shattering to them. They wound up spawning a genre of bands that really sucked though. So they had that going for them. You know..the angst for no reason crap.

I don't mean to undercut Cobain. The unfortunate thing about his suicide is how the demons that surrounded him took away his next chapter where he'd have earned his place among the greats. I like to think he'd have distanced himself from Nirvana (hiatus, etc) to write some solo stuff because we all know Dave Grohl is A-OK with milking a dead cow.

I was a college DJ as well right when Nirvana and Dolittle were dropping (at least in Vermont.) Enjoyed Nirvana's first album. Hated (and hate) the Pixies.

As far as In An Aeroplane Over The Sea goes, I remember listening to it for the first time and remarking how fucking great it was. That's a very rare occurrence.

Ha ha, you kids slay me. They are in the R&R Hall of Fame. And, their members all continued on to further big things after the band folded. I trust you know of Rod Stewart. He was a great blues rock singer, before he became a professional celebrity. Their guitar player, Ronnie Wood later joined the Rolling Stones. Their drummer, Kenny Jones replaced Keith Moon in The Who. Their bassist Ronnie Lane later did an album with Pete Townshend. Their keyboardist Ian MacLagen later toured with many different big names.
