Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
What surprises me is that these are six or seven years old. Given the stakes surrounding a professional athlete's image, I'm shocked that seemingly no one (agent, family, friend, etc.) strongly urged him to delete these at any point...
Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
The only thing he could’ve done is to get out in front of it. The fact he’s a professional athlete means he was a dox vic waiting to happen.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
Probably true. I assume that there is some sort of archive of these things out there. But he apparently didn't even try to delete them, thus making it incredibly easy on anyone with a mind to dredge it up.EnochRoot wrote: ↑Wed Jul 18, 2018 8:27 amThe only thing he could’ve done is to get out in front of it. I love that his first response was to blame it on rap music. I'm sure he's a completely different guy now!

Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
I will say that the majority of them certainly looked like lyrics. No excuse, of course. But I am also glad I didn't have a public outlet for all the stupid shit I said when I was 17 (none of which was a racial slur, mind you!).
You know what you need? A lyrical sucker punch to the face.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
I had this discussion with a buddy over the weekend about current guys going to Cooperstown. CC's a HoFer, right? Maybe not on the first try, but he held the Heavyweight Championship Belt for best pitcher on earth from in 2007 (or maybe through 2009 depending on where you see Timmay), and anyone over the last 40 years who held the belt and didn't have his career go up his nose like Gooden is either in or should be like Clemens.
Here's the article from BIll Barnwell that I was citing.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
I'd throw Doc Halladay in the conversation as well, but I'm sure I'm less than objective on that. Absolutely, though, CC is a HoF for me. Almost a no-brainer.L-Jam3 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 18, 2018 9:12 am I had this discussion with a buddy over the weekend about current guys going to Cooperstown. CC's a HoFer, right? ETA: And I do have faith that at some point, enough voters will pull their heads from their asses to put Clemens in.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
Oh, we were in agreement that partly because of his tragic circumstances, Halladay is going in first ballot. Again, objectivity on me and my buddy's part.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
I think Sabathia is going to have more trouble than he should and I think somehow Buehrle is going to factor in as a false comp or something.
Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
That would be a travesty. I liked Buehrle, obviously, but he's no HoF. He's basically a modern-day Jack Morris (who is also in no way a legitimate HoF).

You guys do know what a majority means, right? I will admit I didn't do a deep dive and run the numbers, but of the ones I saw...

Morris got in on that 1991 Game 7 World Series game alone.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
Yep, basically. And there is certainly a place for great *moments* like that in the Hall. But that doesn't mean that you can excuse actually inducting a pitcher with a career 105 ERA+. :)degenerasian wrote: ↑Wed Jul 18, 2018 9:42 amMorris got in on that 1991 Game 7 World Series game alone.
Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
I feel like Sabathia is having exactly the couple of late-career years that a lot of non-locks need to gain HOF momentum, BUT I was just thinking the other day of how crazy it is that there's a pretty famous pitcher having a damn good season for the freaking New York Yankees after going through what he went (and continues to go) through and I haven't heard one peep about it.

The O's needed to back up the truck and extend him to his 29th birthday after he finally broke through in 2015. They didn't. Shit themselves. Worst owner in baseball.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
Cleveland fans seems to like the deal though, having to give up just one prospect who has struggled whenever coming up to the majors instead of giving up 5.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
I don't blame them. It's a pretty good deal for both teams, given their situations.degenerasian wrote: ↑Thu Jul 19, 2018 11:50 am Cleveland fans seems to like the deal though, having to give up just one prospect who has struggled whenever coming up to the majors instead of giving up 5.
Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
This is a great move for Cleveland. The bullpen has been their biggest weakness this year, and they get two relief arms who are under team control for the next several years (Hand is a FA after 2021; Cimber is a FA after 2023). Mejia is a very promising bat, but he isn't close to Gomes or Perez with regards to defense and handling the pitching staff. It also sounds like the Tribe had soured on Mejia a bit, as he didn't impress in either his September call up or spring training, and he had a rough start in AAA this year.degenerasian wrote: ↑Thu Jul 19, 2018 11:50 am Cleveland fans seems to like the deal though, having to give up just one prospect who has struggled whenever coming up to the majors instead of giving up 5.
This move also effectively means Andrew Miller is gone after this season, and it's unlike Cody Allen will be back, either. If the Indians re-sign either one, it will be Allen.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
Cubs was a lucky draw for you all. Truly. They were desperate. No one, NO ONE, was that desperate this time around. The market is clearly one where dealing guys with more controllable years brings a better return. You can't seriously be disputing that.mister d wrote: ↑Thu Jul 19, 2018 12:52 pmtennbengal wrote: ↑Thu Jul 19, 2018 11:47 amBaltimore’s window to make that deal was two years ago. Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
We're still two weeks before the deadline which means its really hard to assign a final price on one year rentals, no? And while I'm sure its possible Diaz was the best top-side option Baltimore had and LA decided to tack on four more, I'd probably guess atleast one other team was offering a better singular prospect and less behind him. Overall, I love that SD was willing to tack on another pitcher to Hand to get the prospect they really wanted and Baltimore just serves as a convenient counter.
Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
(Also, while I obv agree on controllable versus rental, we're also talking a 0.7 fWAR reliever versus Manny F'ing Machado.)

((And a third approach ... filling their biggest need doesn't justify the cost. My house could be great except for the deck, that wouldn't mean paying $50K for a new deck is smart because now my house overall looks great.))

but you can resell your house with a complete deck if that is the one missing piece.

From last night's game on ESPN...
Matt Vasgersian: Is there anything more obnoxious than the bachelorette party at the ballpark, by the way?
Jessica Mendoza: Why is it obnoxious?
Vasgersian: Congratulations, by the way, yeah, we're all very happy for you, la la la la.
Mendoza: Why is that obnoxious?
Vasgersian: It's such a "look at me thing." You're sitting behind like the bridal party–"Like, oh my god! We're getting married! Ehhhhh."
Mendoza: Woooow. Kind of harsh.
“All I'm sayin' is, he comes near me, I'll put him in the wall.”

Didn't think it needed to be stated, but apparently it does. She's not wrong. Vasgersian was being a misogynist dick.
And, nothing will ever make me pine for Joe Morgan in a booth.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
That was a whole lot of stupidity coming out of both of their mouths. Yes, bringing your bachelorette party to the ballgame is sort of silly, but that's the point of the bachelorette party. Matt Vasgersian taking issue with it on the air is just dumb for many reasons, namely, Jessica Mendoza going to bat for the bachelorettes, baiting him into saying something even dumber. Her #hottake was more annoying than his ignorance.DSafetyGuy wrote: ↑Fri Jul 20, 2018 11:28 am From last night's game on ESPN...
