Yup.

I'm not much of a country music fan, but Jones was incredible. Him, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash to me ARE country music.

George Jones was the man. I particularly enjoy his old rockabilly stuff, like White Lightning and Revenooer Man.

Even if you're not a George Jones fan, everyone should read his autobiography. (I Lived To Tell It All.) There are some crazy stories in there like him being wasted out of his mind and trying to rip Porter Wagoner's dick off. To do as much booze and drugs as he did and to live to 81 is incredible.

Pour one out while mowing the lawn this weekend. (that was George Jones, right?)

You throw in Merle (and of course Hank), and that is my definition.

No one better than George.

Well, he never appeared on Glee, and he never did a duet with Barry Manilow...

And Buck Owens. And Patsy Cline.

That was the best era. What passes for "Country Music" today is neither country nor music.

You have to listen to Hank Williams on vinyl. It just doesn't work digitally. You need some scratches and some graaahhhhkkkkkkkkkk.

Blows my mind that Willie Nelson (who should also be thrown in there) wrote Patsy Cline's "Crazy".

Didn't know that. Wow. And that was 50-years ago? Yikes.

Camera-work (and fashion) has come a long way since then.

ETA: Probably best that dress is not seen in color.

ETAA: Although it did seem to be her favorite garment:

When I list both Buck and Merle, I feel like I am being greedy, west-coast bias and all.

Of course Patsy.

Certainly Willie Nelson belongs. Because he is such a cross-over figure (non-country fans, movies), and gained that general popularity relatively early, I tend to hold that broad appeal against him. Not exactly fair I suppose.

It is so easy to lengthen the list. Several more greats.

And I had know that he was throwing his 80th birthday party in Austin today, I wouldn't have left.

Willis is headlining a music festival about 60 miles south of lexington this summer. Planning to attend.

And his version of Crazy is pretty damn good, too.

You shoulda come watch The Black Crowes with me in the torrential downpour Saturday night!

Peter Gammons retweeted someone who called George Jones one of the smoothest (or something like that) ever and he said "Emmylou, LL and (can't remember the third name) are better". He is either a huge dick or he just didn't realize George Jones had passed away. If it's the former, I hope when he dies someone points out any combination of sportswriters that were better at their craft than Gammons was.

Just for s&g I looked that up, and I think you misinterpreted his tweet:
@pgammo wrote:"Voice as elastic as a steel guitar string..." Jon Pareles on George Jones. Not even today's best--Emmy Lou, Lyle L, Teddy Thompson--better
I read that as "not even today's best are better".

See I interpreted it the same way as Giff. Though it doesn't sound like he realize he died. "Today's best" would imply he's comparing him to people still alive. It's a confusing fucking tweet all the way around.

Yeah, I think you're probably right rass, it was just a poorly-written tweet.

Lyle? Are you fucking kidding me? He is nice, but please. And I don't even want to get into women singers, other than of course emmylou is way up there. Emmylou--George is apples (Honeycrisp, sure)---oranges (clementines).
