Updated results next week, but just so you know, Justify can trace pedigree to Secretariat on both sire and dam sides.

(Granted, a shitload of worse horses can too!)

Meanwhile in the wonderful world of quarterhorses...

Greatest Horse Name Ever

I once bet on a horse at Woodbine named "Chicken On A Stick Baby" (It won.) The above name is far, far funnier.

I guess post time draw is today. I don't know that I will be around much between now and saturday, so if someone can post that when it shows up, great. Then everyone just bet like usual.

Watching with my wife live, I turned to her and said "why is that horse going so wide?" And for full disclosure, SHE thought that Restoring Hope was Justify, so she was all "Yeah WTF is Justify doing?!" And then got sorted out. I say all that to say it really was something I noticed in the moment and then kind of forgot about... Until, I'm seeing him all the way back in, looking like he was pinning another horse to the rail.

But then I totally stopped processing that, when the fucking guy in the white bib is making a go of it? I don't think enough was made of that horse's run, man. Gronkoski out of the gate... At like the first marker, he's easily like 12 lengths back. To the point that I was like "what the fuck is going on with that white horse? Jesus." And then promptly put it out of my mind and then HOLY SHIT was that horse making a late charge.

That was a strange ride by that horse. Telling is the fact that its owner seems really pissed off at the jockey.

Can't imagine that something like this hasn;t happened before - would love to know what the owner said to Baffert after the race.

And there's nothing technically illegal or against any written rules, apparently.

Reading around on this a bit, there was "allegedly" a concerted effort to keep a particular horse/owner from attaining the Triple Crown not that long ago.

I can see why the owner of the blocking horse wouldn't like it. It worked to the benefit of his trainer, but not to him!

Report: Triple Crown Winner Justify Failed Drug Test Ahead Of Kentucky Derby

Bottom line: Justify shouldn't even have been allowed to run in the Derby.

What a farce.
The board reportedly took weeks to even tell Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert about the failed drug test, and then another four months to close its inquiry, which it did in hushed, suspect fashion:

It decided, with little evidence, that the positive test could have been a result of Justify’s eating contaminated food. The board voted unanimously to dismiss the case. In October, it changed the penalty for a scopolamine violation to the lesser penalty of a fine and possible suspension.

Shocking that the powers that be decided that the good press of a triple crown winner was better than enforcing the rules!

(Also, a little interested to see how this affects Stud rates and yearling sales prices. Keeneland's sales are going now, but there may be none of his offspring in this year's sales.)
