So the official song has been released. I like that it has to have a world angle...also like that we will get this version of Will Smith and not a summer Will Smith movie.

A very forgettable 43 seconds. No need for seconds 44 through 208.
Shall we do a pool?

Gah...what the hell was that Will Smith thing?
Here's the best football anthem:
'World In Motion' by New Order...done for England 1990.

Could be interesting. Lots of nature pr0n shots of the Golden Circle, which probably makes it worthwhile in and of itself.

Not sure where to put this, so I’ll drop it here, given the locale of the upcoming World Cup. Fascinating read.

Love the Japan shirt!
It's gorgeous. Really like Belgium, Spain and France as well, and the entirety of Group D.

Christ, what news to wake up to! Spain sack Lopetegui two days prior to the tournament, because he took the Madrid job, scheduled to begin after the tournament! The joint Canada, US, Mexico bid won the right to host WC2026!

Unreal - why would Real Madrid announce this before the World Cup? And why on earth do you fire the manager right now? I don;t get it. Surely Sid Lowe in the Guardian will have more soon...

The Madrid thing did not turn my head. I have seen coaches take jobs that start after the World Cup before. I think Spain was silly here. Unless this was a Catalan thing. Then everything is just different.

I could be wrong, but I can't imagine the Catalan contingent having enough clout to pull this off.

And yes, Sid and the TSFP guys will be all over this.

They should hire Guardiola for a month.
Have him roaming the sidelines with that Catalonian Independence lapel.

This is actually shocking to me. Even as of yesterday Grant Wahl was saying that lots of people had publicly talked about going away from the Concacaf bid. He even highlighted that the fact that the votes would be made public could hurt the bid. I guess the $11 Billion number that the U.S. guy put into the presentation won the day. The fact that US won't have to build stadiums is going to be HUGE on the profit and risk mitigation for FIFA.
Other things
1.) Trump will take credit for this
2.) Canada will make a world cup final for the first time since 1986 (I will take the will not qualify for 2022 cup right now)
3.) Is this enough to resolve the kerfuffle that our president caused with our friends up north (yeah I did not think so either)

George Quaraishi (formerly of Howler, now at the Athletic) was downplaying our chances big time yesterday on Twitter. His main point being that not having to build stadia would mean less chances to grift, thus not being a selling point for us. Canada is not a confirmed qualifier yet (although I'd suspect with the move to 48 teams in 2026, that they're in).

Right that was one of the reasons folks thought France was going against the U.S.

As soon as Trump realizes we can't win, he'll change it to a football World Cup and refuse to host any soccer teams.

What a world, what a world.
Toronto's Mayor says that it will cost $300 million to stage the games (excluding security costs!) And knowing the way things work here, the cost will be higher - just so the city can host 3 games?
As always up here, the announcement of costs comes with the assurances that all 3 levels of government will split the cost. Since I pay taxes to all 3 of those governments, I am not thrilled. Not on board with this as a taxpayer. BMO field seats 30,000, Rogers centre will need serious retrofitting... they start talking about a new stadium, I will take to the streets to protest.

Pique just referenced Steve Fisher taking over for Bill Frieder before the 1989 NCAA title as an example of why Spain fans should not despair their chances.
