Yeah but that line between "shot I should try to block and shot I should let go" is incredibly thin in that microsecond where the decision (er, instinct) is presented.

As far as a rooting interest of "countries I've been to" is, it's down to Colombia and England for me.

I get it. But it used to drive me crazy, particularly when they would jump in front of me and try to do my job. More than once I've pushed my own guy out of the way to make a save. You just don't have the tools or skill set to make that a high percentage play.

But I know it's very nitpicky in that moment. Just a long-held pet peeve of mine.

England looking very dangerous down the left. I'm not used to them having so much team speed.

Sucks that Hamez isn't out there.

Colombia trying to bring the level of play down. Very clearly a tactic, not just temper.

This game is going to end with some kind of shambolic defending by England leading to a late Colombian goal. Book it.

He is an MLS Ref but pretty accomplished on the world stage
Geiger has refereed the 2012 Olympics; at the 2013 and 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cups; and at the 2014 (3 matches) and 2018 (currently 3rd match plus VAR work) FIFA World Cups. At the 2014 World Cup, he became the first referee from the United States to officiate a knockout match at a World Cup tournament. Before becoming a full-time referee, Geiger was a high school mathematics teacher (After studying teaching at Trenton State College, he became a mathematics teacher at Lacey Township High School in Lanoka Harbor, New Jersey, a role that he gave up to become a full-time referee. While at Lacey Township High School, Geiger was among 103 recipients of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching in 2010.).

I was hoping there wouldn't be any controversy for the 'Murican ref. Too much to hope for, I guess.

I have friends on vacation in Colombia right now (he is Colombian-American, she is a blonde, blue-eyed American. Three kids.) I wonder if this might affect their safety. Seriously.

I very much doubt it. Colombia is probably safer than America these days. The gangs and cartels have been routed.

That was 1000 percent a penalty kick.

All this crap about Geiger losing control of the game is ridiculous. Anyone ever watch CONMEBOL qualifying? When a South American team wants to turn a game nasty, there's very little a ref can do other just resort to doling out yellows and reds. And then they will claim he lost control and that's why all the cards came out.

It's a no-win situation. And a COL coach barging into an English player just cements the fact that they are just trying to bring the game into the gutter. They are without their best player, so you know going in they were going to do this if it looked like England were taking it to them.

This happens a LOT with S.A. teams. Very cynical at times.

Yes, and I don't mean to profile. But, I do recall that a Colombian player who caused an own-goal at a previous World Cup was murdered when he got home. People all over the world take this stuff seriously.

As much as we can make fun of Colombia's shitshow antics, England have one shot on target outside the penalty. They've simply not been anywhere near good enough.
