Trivia: who won the World Footballer of the Year (now Ballon D'Or) in 2007?
you get 10 guesses.

The World Footballer of the Year goes back before 2007....The award was won by Best, Charlton, Yashin, Eusébio, Mueller, Cruff, Beckenbauer, Kevin Keegan (one of my favorite old highlight tapes has great commentary on him)...but the first one...well that is a special one for the swamp.

This would be good. Ryan asks a question and then a dozen guys trip over each other to answer it.

I've been a fan of Modric's play if not his weaselly move to get out of London) since his days with Spurs.

he is a truly great player.

But he clearly was not the best player on Real Madrid last season.

DeBruyne a better choice if you are looking beyond the traditional Messi/Ronaldo battle.

Nobody really stands out so far this year. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is a calendar year award, right?) Ronaldo "led" Madrid to a 3rd consecutive CL title, but did fuck all for the first half of the La Liga season (coincidentally, the end of 2017) so maybe it'll be him again. Messi was the driving force behind Barcelona's La Liga title with oodles of goals, but they crapped out in what the QF of the CL? Modric is very good, but I'd be very surprised if he won, even if Hrvatska pull off the upset on Sunday. Those might be your finalists though. Maybe DeBruyne, Salah,

I can't think of anyone with a better resume from France, Croatia, Madrid, or Liverpool, or anyone who lit it up for a non-finalist team.

I completely ignored Modric's play in the World Cup.

Yeah, they win, he could get the trophy.

So England finish out 3-1-3 with two losses to Roberto Martinez.

Looks like the "team that suffers a soul-crushing loss in the semifinals loses the third-place game" rule holds.

The better team won the game. Croatia was done after the 3rd goal.

Classic moment in the deluge after the game when some massive henchman was holding an umbrella over Putin while Macron and the Croatian Prime Minister were getting soaked.

That was a fun World Cup. In my opinion, the three best teams were France, Belgium and Brazil and it was interesting how Roberto Martinez came up with a really good game plan to beat Brazil but then got outmaneuvered by Deschamps in the semis. I also really enjoyed Croatia's style of play. They always seemed willing to press the action and their presence in the Final made it a much more enjoyable game than if someone like Spain, Russia or England came through that side of the bracket.
