So with east coast bias you just don't hear about some of the smaller universities out west...but know both of these. Chapman is a powerhouse in the virtual varsity club lacrosse league and I think Redlands has a pretty strong d3 athletics setup (tennis and soccer).

Always fun to see alumni of schools like this...Guessing Chapman has a very strong film/tv program.

Thanks everyone. Its pretty cool for her, and I won't complain at all about having an excuse to visit SoCal for a few years.

It’s a process for sure. Given some mid semester struggles I’ll take it.

AB - things still going well at BU? Geep's oldest is the same grade as Q and is also on her college search process. She was supposed to tour BU yesterday along with a few others in the Boston area but Spirit Airlines did what Spirit does best and canceled the flight up and she is having to re-schedule. I mentioned to him that things seemed to going well for your daughter and the early returns were positive.

My son has just officially finished University.

His school has a "GradEx" where all the grads display their thesis projects and industry types come through looking for new hires. Fingers crossed!

Yes. After an early boyfriend-related bump in the road, things are going very well. She managed her courseload well the first semester, and has done OK this semester but hopefully still getting out with As/Bs. She has been pretty involved, writing a column for paper and will be an editor next semester. Also does the one day a week at radio station and did join a Sorority, where she has found a group to be roommates with next year still on campus. I think that will help her stay connected.

That's a pretty damn successful first year, frankly. Especially that far from home.

I will say this about this semester...I think the classwork was more demanding, and right now she's scrambling to get late semester stuff turned in. I didn't want her to work this year at all, but she got a job at starbucks that eats into her time and bank account due to uber to get there. Her dorm next year is closer to the location so hopefully that gets better. But I can't say i told you so. At least not until she and I drive back next month.

Kenny Mayne just tweeted that his daughter has chosen. Boston University for her school - so AB can start working on all of Mayne’s catch phrases for when he bumps into him on campus next fall.

My dad's family is from Kentucky and my uncle went to school there. I'm going to text and see what they say, but I'm pretty sure they'll say south.

Kentucky is Appalachia. Different than The South. Kissing cousins, if you will.

"South" and "mostly South" are the two responses.

Kentuckians says it's a mixed bag.

Louisville and environs is the Midwest. The rest is the South.

Small towns in the southern half of Ohio are pretty much the South.

It can be a big adjustment. Is he completing work and doing poorly or working on developing the time-management to get shit done? The latter was what took me a big to adjust to. I could no longer just get by on listening in class and flash memorizing notes 30 minutes before exams like I did in HS.

I'm trying not to pry too much, but he failed his math test. Which is a complete shock, as he was always the whiz kid at math (as was I). I think it's mostly time management - severe ADHD, depression, and anxiety don't help though. He has been studying and doing the work, but he tells me he does not know how to study.

So I am hopeful that after being smacked in the face with the first round of tests, he will rally. It is nerve-wracking because he is on a partial scholarship / tuition waiver that requires a 2.5 GPA. But I think that is looked at on a yearly basis, not every semester.

Well, he rallied enough to finish the first semester with a 2.4 GPA, but it was so stressful, and he was suffering so much anxiety, that he took a medical withdrawal two weeks into the spring semester. He came home to SLC and immediately started taking classes at the local community college. He's done fine with those, and also was just accepted to transfer to the U of Utah for the fall. While he is eligible to return to the School of Mines, it looks like he will just transfer here.

He is doing so much better mentally, though. And he just started his part-time summer job - working at the Salt Lake Bees' ballpark in the concession stands. He basically learned to walk and read at the ballpark, so I find that part extra cool.

He'll probably find he likes it at a bigger school. It's easier to blend in for sure. I don't know if I would have wanted to go to a school much smaller than Central and we still had 18,000 students when I went there.

I had similar adjustment issues in college, but was able to maintain the grades. It wasn't until law school that I feel like I had the shock of not getting the grades I'd been used to.

However, I often wonder about what it would have been like to go to a smaller school for undergrad, as opposed to the 30k or so that was at UF at the time.
