The most logical theory I've heard is that Trump desperately wants Kavanaugh, as he is the only potential nominee who openly stated his belief that the President should be above the law. There were over 20 potential nominees on Trump's list, and Kavanaugh wasn't one of them. The Federalist Society and Heritage Foundation, who supposedly wielded the power in selecting SCt nominees, have a lot of names that would make Evangelicals and Conservatives equally happy, but none of them declared the President above the law. Makes a lot of sense that Trump wants to hold out for Kavanuagh, since he is ultimately selecting his own jury.testuser2 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 27, 2018 9:19 am I'm a bit cynical in that they knew all of this about him from the beginning and have always planned to run him out there before ultimately pulling him back before confirmation. This is to demonstrate that they aren'y morally bankrupt and are sharing in the #metoo movement right before the elections in November. Gaining back those white female voters will be much easier if they can use this as an example of how they care about women.
Trump did act strangely when the accusations initially came out. Like someone had coached him into saying that there was another game being played and to be open to initial character questions about his nominee. Is there another case where Trump did something and then accepted criticism? It does look like he has come off the rails a bit and has now gone back to his typical ranting. That also matches with his inability to remember what the hell he's trying to do.

Re: Bart O’Kavanaugh hearings and inevitable confirmation
This is possible but I’ve also read that the initial list was heavy on judges from “middle America” for political reasons. The GOP and Federalist Society has been grooming Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court for a long time and he could’ve easily been tabbed by another GOP President. It’s easy to say that Trump should withdraw his nomination now and pick Amy Barrett. But Trump is pathologically unable to admit to mistakes and I think he also views the Kavanaugh vote as a referendum on himself given his own history of sexual assault. The Sybian wrote: ↑Thu Sep 27, 2018 9:36 amThe most logical theory I've heard is that Trump desperately wants Kavanaugh, as he is the only potential nominee who openly stated his belief that the President should be above the law. It seems inconceivable to me that this matters unless the swing votes are so spineless they're just waiting to gauge the postgame climate to see if a Y is ok.

Not that this is more important than what Ms. Ford is suffering and doing for her country, but I cannot imagine how any of this helps the GOP on any level in the coming mid-terms.

This is such an INCREDIBLY bad look for the GOP. Just the format alone... I can't really say it enough and more emphatically for those that aren't watching this.
Credible, incredibly poignant and believable, heart felt.
Then you get this Prosecutor questioning her, trying to build some bullshit case that she is mis-remembering bullshit details that have nothing to do with the assault.
TERRIBLE look for the GOP.

The hearing is on a brief break. Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley walked by stakeout cameras during the break and said this:
“I don’t think I can make any comments at all today, maybe it’s something I ought to sleep on. This is pretty important. We ought to be thinking about it a lot and not making hasty comments.”

maybe and that would coincide with my theory that the GOP just wants to jam up the political process and supreme court and not really overturn anything including Roe v Wade.testuser2 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 27, 2018 9:19 am I'm a bit cynical in that they knew all of this about him from the beginning and have always planned to run him out there before ultimately pulling him back before confirmation. However, this is a chance of a lifetime for the GOP to get someone in and control the Supreme Court for decade after blocking Garland for 9 months.

Re: Bart O’Kavanaugh hearings and inevitable confirmation
This is a tough read but illustrates my point. Show this to 100 people and the majority will believe her. Stage it differently where you present the man first, give some humanizing details about him and then have her tweets naming him and a different 100 are going to start leaving doors open and hearing both sides.

It's really not all that plausible that this is some kind of long term strategy of gaining back the female vote.

They don't want to be on camera "doubting" this woman, because they're fucking cowards and don't want another Anita Hill blowback.
But it's just fucking horrible given the current climate. Horrible.

Yeah, was just breaking this down with someone here in the office and this is just a classic lose-lose situation.
This is probably a better way to go, but we're talking about a situation where this comes down to Dr. Ford and her credibility. I think they were hoping for her to come in and shit the bed. The gambled and they lost.
Her testimony is SCREAMING for further investigation. The fact that there was no FBI investigation AND that Mark Judge wasn't called is now being highlighted in a way that is the definition of backfiring.

He was. At one point. He's been one of Trump's most vocal boosters for months. (Ever since he went golfing with Trump and, many suspect, Trump disclosed that he had some blackmail information on Graham, most likely about Graham being gay.)degenerasian wrote: ↑Thu Sep 27, 2018 1:01 pmI know!
