As a Caps fan that watched teams lead the league in points 3 times in 7 seasons... That bolded part can't be bolded enough.

RD 1
TB vs. MON
BOS vs. TOR
NYI vs. CAR
WAS vs. PIT

CAL vs. MIN
SJ vs. VEG
NSH vs. DAL
PEG vs. STL

Obviously, there's a shit load of hockey left (14-15 games), but some of those first rounders are gonna be awesome.

If Columbus is gonna make a run, they've gotta get through a BRUTAL road schedule the next 2 weeks or so. Montreal is in a slump, but they've got a much more friendly March schedule. Carolina has a somewhat easier schedule than Columbus, but they finish the month with two games against PIT and WAS, the former of which is still fighting to stay out of the Wild Card/Don't Make It zone (81 pts vs. 79 for CAR and MON.)

I'd like to note that the most important thing right now is that MIN stays in the 7 or 8 slot so I can win 20$ from a guy I drunkenly bet that they'd make the playoffs the night before Koivu tore his knee apart. Go Wild.

San Jose's gonna overtake Calgary to win the Pacific so it'll probably be Calgary vs. Vegas in first round (in my opinion). But your point stands. Seeing better first-round matchups because of the way the playoff is structured, but also simply because there are more teams, so you don't have as many undeserving teams making the playoffs. When Seattle comes in, the NHL will finally be at "only" 50 percent of the teams making the playoffs.

But I'll take the randomness of the NHL playoffs over the NBA any day, especially the current NBA where at most there's only two or three teams every year that even have a chance to win the title.

Stone's 8 year, $9.5M AAV extension is official. Still waiting on an Erik Karlsson extension. If it doesn't get done before the playoffs start, have to assume he's going to test free agency.

Interesting part of Stone’s deal is that it is $48M in signing bonuses and $28M in salary. Signing bonuses not subject to income tax in Nevada of course but also not for income taxes in other cities Vegas plays in. Tax savings for Stone equivalent to making $12M a year in California.

So you think 12 million a year in California is the same as $9.5 million in Nevada? You think his California state tax rate would be 20.8%? (2.5/12). Jeebus, I don't know who your tax advisor is, but you need somebody else, because that is not even close.

ETA: I looked up the tax tables. If you have taxable income of 12m, a married guy would have an effective rate of about 12% California state tax. (Of course, he probably has a good tax guy who'd get him into some tax shelters and lower the tax burden.)

No, you're right. Would be closer to about $11M depending on local taxes. $76M at about 13 percent state tax and X percent city taxes (not sure which -- if any -- cities in CA have municipal income taxes) would be about $10 to $12M total paid in California taxes. Spread out over 8 years, about $1.25M to $1.5M extra per year. Would be about the same as $12M in Canada though because of higher provincial and national taxes there.

CapFriendly's tax calculator has a $12M salary in San Jose resulting in about $6M per year post-tax. In Las Vegas, that's $7.6M.

Golden Knights become first NHL team to have dedicated Instagram and Twitter accounts in Spanish. (VGK currently only team in NHL to broadcast all 82 games in Spanish on radio.)

VGK's Spanish language announcer has had some national stories done about him and his Andres Cantor-inspired goal calls. I had thought it was the OT winner against LA here, but maybe an OT winner in a regular season game last season where Lopez had an awesome goal call, yelling "goal de oro, goal de oro" (golden goal) about five or six times after the extended goal calls. I tried to find it on Twiiter but no dice.

Against Jersey? And Vegas was on the back half of a back-to-back, with MAF unavailable. Don’t get too excited just yet.

True but it's still nice, they were in a scoring funk for weeks. You guys are on a roll, will be tough to catch you now.

Both of the Rangers majors + games tonight are (1) nothing remotely near NHL game misconducts and (2) absolutely game misconducts in a safe league.

Radek Simek blew out his knee on Wednesday, and Erik Karlsson is still out, so the Sharks are now down two d-men. Really glad they didn’t give any defensemen up at the trade deadline!

I don't think so, but Marchand was called for the same thing a minute later when he hit a stick out of someone's one hand while the guy's other hand was holding the puck. Jack Edwards was astonished.

Flames are in San Jose on the 31st, hope it's more than a 1 point lead by then.

Before that, it's 5 out of 6 at home, and it should be easy.

Ooof. I know you don't want to hear this, but I legit feel sorry for Edmonton fans. First, they're mostly good people. Always have fun with the Edmonton fans when they come to Las Vegas.

Second of all, all those fucking draft picks and how mis-managed the team has been. As a Lions fan, I can very much empathize. And then having McDavid and Draisaitl and literally almost nothing else on the roster is almost too cruel.

I have no problems with Oilers fans. They're actually way more loyal through thick and thin than the bandwagoner Flames fans here.
I have many good friends from Edmonton who now work in Calgary and it's a fun rivalry when we rib each other.

It's the Canucks fans who are assholes.
