Erik Karlsson (amongst others including Mark Stone and William Karlsson) is eligible to sign a long-term contract now (post-Jan1).

I can only assume if he's going to sign one it's probably gonna happen in the next couple weeks or so? At a certain point, it behooves him to go to free agency if it drags on until the season is almost over.

I'd be shocked if EK doesn't test the market.

Maybe, though it was presented as an article of faith that a long-term extension where EK could get 8 years instead of 7 was a done deal as part of his trade to San Jose.

I don't remember the specifics of his departure from Ottawa, other than the Sens are/were a complete mess. Did he have any say in where he was going, via waiving no trade, or no move clauses?

I don't think he had any no-trade or no movement clauses. Far as I know, he's didn't necessarily agitate for SJ specifically but presumably he wanted to go to a Cup contender -- which they were and are -- and SJ offered the deal Ottawa liked the best. At the time of the trade, it was reported that the only reason an extension wasn't part of it was because of the difference in years he could get after Jan1 as opposed to before.

So I guess soon enough we'll see if that was true.

I refuse to believe SJS gave up that much without an under the table deal that he resigns with them. That deal is either already done or SJS got fucked in the ass.

NHL had a chance to do something really cool by slotting Vegas into the Heritage Classic in Regina next season and didn't do it. We might have gotten a chance to see how much legs the Saskatchewan Golden Knights really has.
I think if you tried to put Vegas in anything called Heritage in a Canadian game, there would be an armed revolt. Besides I assume we're a lock for the 2021 WC since it's unlikely the Raiders will need that stadium in the first week of January.

I was thinking the same thing, but have they played the WC in an indoor stadium yet? If the 2020 WC is at AT&T Stadium then that would set that precedent but I didn't see they had settled on a venue.

For some reason, I thought the glass part of the roof was going to be retractable which is apparently not the case. Kinda defeats the purpose for "Winter" game but wouldn't be surprised if they did it for Stadium series.

$1.9 billion and not even a retractable roof, right? What a fucking boondoggle. Meanwhile, I'm not certain most public school students in Las Vegas are literate.

Alls I’m gonna say about the All-Star Game rosters is that it’s dumb they don’t just take 14 per division instead of 11 if there has to be someone from every team.

I mean you can roll four “lines” of 3 and it’s a more fair number anyway.

There was a Stadium Series game at BC Place in 2014. Not the same thing, obviously.

I'm a bit late to this discussion, but I read everything I can Sharks-related, and I know Doug Wilson wined and dined Karlsson to get him to buy-in to coming to San Jose. I understand Karlsson also spoke at length with Thornton and Burns. Not sure if he had a formal or limited no-movement clause, or if the Sharks just wanted to ensure they would be getting a happy player.

I've posted before that Doug Wilson has implied that he would not have made the trade if he didn't believe Karlsson was likely to sign a long-term deal with the Sharks.

It wouldn't "shock" me if Karlsson tests the free agency waters, but I don't think that's the way to bet. I think the probability is that he signs long-term with the Sharks, soon.

Fun article on the terms Spanish hockey announcers use for hockey terms that have no literal translation into Spanish.

Example:
"When someone smashes someone else into the wall, I'd yell, 'There's a ham sandwich! Torta de jamon!'" Lopez said.

Awesome!

The Expos french broadcast team in 69 also had to invent terms. Lanceurs and Voltigeurs

As an aside, my father once penned an article in the local Vietnamese paper on the rules of baseball since he often got questions about how to watch the sport. He made up a bunch of slang I don't think is official but in Calgary, that's what people use. I heard these terms on the street over the years so I get a kick out of it.

Standings likely won't stay the same in any division, but that potential Sharks/Knights first round series would likely be a barnburner (along with Toronto/Boston).

* - Caps desperately needed to right the ship at the tail end of a fairly brutal 4 game road swing. 3-2 over Detroit yesterday. Next up is a clash with the Pens on Tuesday.

* - The Metro is getting pretty tight. I hadn't checked the standings for a minute... 4 teams are within 4 points at the top. (WAS, PIT, COL, NYI).

* - Meanwhile, over in the Atlantic, Tampa is absolutely running away it. And their +52 goal difference is pretty impressive. I know this is really rough math, but that's on pace for a little over +100 by the end of the season. (The closest to that GD in the league is Calgary at +30.)

* - Don't look now, but the Isles are sneaking up on folks... 6 game winning streak, 9-1 in the last 10, currently in Wild Card slot.

=-=-=-=

Wilson hating folks, ignore:

I've watched most of these road games on Condensed Game mode, with 8 minute highlight packages. Wilson must've been stoned at least 6 different times on breakway/close-in opportunities in the 3 games leading up to yesterday. He finally broke through yesterday, which is pretty important to get the team back on track.

One of those is a loss so not two 8-game streaks, but yes that's an impressive point streak to be sure and unlikely to be matched by anyone else this season.

Still, I think it's crazy that Winnipeg has never had a 7-game winning streak and the Stars' longest winning streak ever is 7.

The Winnipeg/Atlanta franchise hasn't had that many good seasons in their history. In fact they usually sucked until a couple years ago. The Atlanta Thrashers only made the playoffs once, and never recorded a playoff win (they were swept).

Eric Karlsson has now scored at least a point in the last 14 games he's played.

I thought that was a big deal until i learned that Wayne Gretzky once scored points in 51 straight games. It was a different era, but still amazing.
