The only sliver lining in today's Tigers/Twins debacle was the Tigers broke the AL record for most consecutive games throwing 10+ strikeouts. With four games against the Astros coming up, they could really put some distance away on that one.

There are some balls that Pedro Alvarez hits that look like they should be fouled off, but instead they go 400+ feet into the upper deck. If he would only stop striking out 30 times in-between them.

Also, John Axford is the gift that keeps on giving. Why they keep trotting him out there in high-leverage situations baffles me.

I believe I saw that two more such games would tie the MLB mark.

He absolutely crushed a foul ball to the upper deck in one of the games in Philly last week.

Read that on the Buccos board. He's going to light up a home run derby someday*.

Today's HR was a weird swing at a 2-2 breaking ball on the outer corner, sent to the upper deck in the right field power alley.

Totally jealous. Now that the Tigers play in Houston every season though, I'll have to work out a trip down there in the next season or two. Hit up Austin for a couple of days also.

Funny the lengths some people will go to in trying to explain why their team can't hit a friggin' beach ball. The Jays are dead last in the AL with a team average of .228 (the pitching staff is 13th in the AL with an ERA of 4.72).

As an aside, that hiring of John Gibbons isn't exactly looking brilliant.

Both the Tigers and Astros had 18 Ks last night, only the third time in MLB history that two teams each had 18 or more. The second time in MLB history was the Tigers and Mariners a couple of weeks ago.

From Elias:
Each team struck out 18 times on Thursday night, marking only the third time in major-league history that each team struck out that many times in one game. That had happened only once over the first 137 seasons of Major League Baseball: the Giants and the Padres each fanned 20 times in a 15-inning game in 2001. But it has now happened twice within the first five weeks of this season; Detroit's hitters struck out 21 times and Seattle's 19 times in a 14-inning game back on April 17.

The Indians are 4-1 when facing former Cy Young winners this season. They beat R.A. Dickey, David Price, Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee, but lost to Jake Peavy.

He frustrates the shit out of me, but I can't help but like Leyland when he's not actually doing managing type stuff.
"We're a team built for a marathon," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said after the game. "Well, metaphorically. I smoke two packs a day, so I'm not running anywhere. Prince, well, I don't want to be mean, but he's no marathoner. Neither is Miggy. Also, our biggest weakness has been our bullpen. We're not actually built for a marathon at all. I can't believe we won."

It's Metallica night at AT&T Park tonight. Here, the Giants PR guys dressed up Barry Zito for a promo pic:

Any interest in getting a 13 run pool going?

I can collect money ($5/team) and keep score via google spreadsheet.

The first team to score 0-13 (0, 1, 2, 3..........13) runs in a game wins.

We'll randomize the teams and allow multiple teams per person.

T'would be nice if one had the option of going with either Runs For or Runs Against. So if, for example, one had the Toronto Blue Jays, they'd be able to go with Runs Against.

I like that idea...lets roll with it. It would also help with teams that lack firepower like the Astros and Miami.

Alex Avila hit a two-run homer in the top of the 9th to give the Tigers the win. In one of those amusing baseball quirks, he now has four homers and five RBI.

Sounds like Mark Ellis, Carl Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez and Hanley Ramirez are all out for the rest of the Giants series. My avatar bet is doomed.

That'll give Hanley time to reflect on the fact that he is too damn old to be going first-to-third (on Crazylegs Pence's sidearm).

Most of these Dodger players I kinda like (Kemp, Either, Kershaw), and I feel guilty for that. And these newcomers, I liked them with their prior teams. But I've already worked up some good hatred on Crawford, Gonzalez and Hanley in Dodger unis. Fuck those guys.

Kershaw pitched his ass off. Two mistakes; happened to be in the same inning. Zito played Houdini all six innings (five and one batter I guess). That was grand theft by the orange.

Hey Giff -- this is going to sound sarcastic, but I promise you it isn't, but I really like this Astros team. I'm going to be rooting my ass off for them when they're not playing the Tigers. They remind me a lot of the 2003 Tigers team in all of the good and bad ways, but that's one of my favorite Tigers teams of all time. Despite all the losing, they played with a lot of heart all season and I see the same thing in the Astros this year. Half the team on the 2003 Tigers were also on the 2006 World Series team.

As I hear chants of GO LEAFS GO . . . GO LEAFS GO . . . echoing through Rogers Center as the Blue Jays sleepwalk through another abysmal performance, it strikes me that, yes, it is exactly the Leafs that this Blue Jays team brings to mind.

Unwatchable. When an entire roster exhibits only the same indifference, game after game, it's the manager that has to go. No player on the Jays stands out as actually being interested in playing the games.

Not exactly breaking news, but Miguel Cabrera is good at baseball. He had 5 PAs tonight and had an RBI in all of them. (4-for-4, 1 walk, 2 HRs, 6 RBI.)

He's batting over .500 with RISP this season.
