True there are many ways to win and people shouldn't copycat. A once in a generation trade is no way more replicable than tanking for a once in a generation star.

You needed to have an injured star who missed a year who didn’t trust his team. The injury needed to be bad enough that his value was depressed so you didn’t have to gut your team to get him. You needed to have him come back at 100%. You needed to have a top 4 team to start with with Cap space / matching Salary to make the trade.

This is not a replicable way to win a championship. And Toronto doing it just increases the trade cost for everyone trying to replicate it. The price for Davis just went up so now you will deplete your team trying to acquire the top 5 player.

the Raptors winning the title has nothing to do with Anthony Davis' trade value

If we're comparing unlikely titles, I still have to think the 2004 Pistons were even more unlikelier than Toronto. The Raptors have a Hall of Famer. The '04 Pistons are probably going to end up the only team for around a half-century to win a title without a Hall of Famer or NBA MVP.

I'll admit I didn't watch a ton of NBA this year but I'm not sure this team turns on Leonard. You could substitute Durant or maybe 4 other guys. Wouldn't do it the same way and perhaps the uniqueness is the varied skill set of the alpha dog but you can replicate the parts and that's what got it done.

NBA HOF standards are pretty lax compared to baseball and football. So I’d expect that Pistons team to end up with some HOF’ers. Billups is probably getting in and Ben Wallace should also get in for being a revolutionary defender. Teams now crave big men who can both bang down low and also chase guards on the perimeter and Big Ben was one of the first guys to fit that prototype.

Chauncey Billups is somehow both way underrated and the least HOF-worthy star ever to me.

Like, his top win share comps are Dwyane Wade, George Gervin, and Steve Nash which makes no sense because those players are great and he is not. But he is?

It's funny when it's a spoiled bitch like that. Assuming he broke it because of his love of the Warriors and not because he lost a bet or something. Which would still be funny.

He said he had money on the Warriors, though usually in those cases it's both. That's why you never bet money (well, not real money at least) on a team you love.

I don't know what the spread was, but it's possible it wasn't staged. But I do agree that the more likely time to break shit in a rage would have been after the Curry miss/scramble for the ball/technical foul, so it definitely doesn't pass the smell test.

If it wasn't for Vince Carter you might not have a team.

Look at Vancouver and Steve Francis.

Ease up and have a Bill Buckner moment. All is forgiven with a title. Seems like you ought to be mad at Tracy McGrady.

No offence, but that is a bad take. The Raptors have never been in danger of being moved.

And Carter quit on the team. Check the stats. Not like Buckner's one mistake, this was a guy who simply stopped trying. He shit on the team and its fans.

You dont know this. They got Carter in Year 4.
If they had sucked into year 7 like Vancouver did with executive problems, the NBA might have pulled the plug on Canada.

Remember the ownership shitshow the first 3 years plus Isaiah Thomas? That was poison.

The Maple Leafs buying the team in 98, plus the new GM Grunwald making bold moves with new money saved the franchise. Vancouver never benefitted from this.

Which is why when MLSE bought them from Slaight things immediately stabilized. That was in '98 in the middle of their 3rd season.

We didn't talk much about this when the incident happened after the Raptors won, but this is not surprising. The Thin Blue Line knows no shame.

Sheriffs admit Raptors exec Masai Ujiri showed ID before Oracle Arena incident

But yet....
KPIX-TV reported Monday that Alameda County Sheriff Greg Ahern "personally reviewed" the deputy's bodycam footage, as well as that of Oracle's security cameras. He told the outlet that he will recommend the district attorney charge Ujiri with misdemeanor battery of an officer.

He's been on medical leave since the incident. Motherfucker pled no contest to medical insurance fraud in 2005, as well. The charge was discovered when he was applying to be a San Mateo police officer. He didn't get that job, but apparently that was not an issue for the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.

Jail time. Fuck him.

The 7th and 8th "best" teams in a conference have Luka Doncic and Damian Lillard. Zion Williamson didn't make it. Curry and Thompson aren't there. The Grizzlies could beat anyone starting next year. The Suns are dangerous? I don't know how you can be a fan of, like, Minnesota or Sacramento and not just say "fuck it" for the next 5 years.

The same reason they haven't said fuck it for the past decade?

It'd be interesting to see if the NBA would entertain changes to conference/playoffs if they have to do the bubble again next season. Why not shake it up when geography is out of the equation?
