God that face. That look is the only thing that keeps me from booting my black lab out of this house more often than not. She's such a little shit but then she "smiles" at you and she's the best dog ever.

I am now able to post in this thread. Ben is a heeler mix who is almost 11 weeks old. He doesn't sit still much, but these should get the point across.

We had decided some time ago that we would get a dog (10-year-old daughter has wanted one for some time and we waited for our five-year-old son to get a little bigger - he is still a little scared, but we're working on both parties and figure they'll grow together), so my wife had applied with a rescue and been approved a while ago. Demand has been so high, she called as soon as they posted their new arrivals. Had I not heard her on the phone with the rescue Thursday, she probably would have reserved him without even talking to me. I looked up what a heeler was and texted Brian to ask. By the time he was able to get back to me, we had already reserved him.

He's way better looking than Mike and Snoopy (the other two dogs that were available).

After I come into the house after being out in the sun for awhile, my dog will invariable come up to me and lick my calves, shins and knees. I'm a human salt lick. Sometimes, she'll go on and on. Today, I just let her keep at it to see how long she would continue, but we'll never know how long it could have been, because my wife got disgusted and made her stop.

That's fantastic, DSafe.

While we're talking about heelers, are "red heeler," "blue heeler," and Australian shepherd entirely different breeds?

Ever since we got our dog (years ago, see Page Three for our adventure with him), various people have told us that our dog is one of those three. But everyone says something different.

I'm sure he's a mutt anyway, but what the hell breed is he?

ETA: I can no longer figure out how to post photos - but here's a link to my post from back then.

Mine walks when she shits so you have to pick up a nice little 1.5 foot line’o’poos

I was so proud when T lifted his leg to pee on a post and then turned it into a poop with a smooth transition. and now she's done that multiple times too. the pee squat into the arched back for the poop manuever. the doggie version of the cat camel pose

ETA: We do not have a dog. WTH.

Ah, to be so young as last week. We now have a dog. Jennie's grandmother has basically been placed into in-home hospice and can no longer take care of her dog due to pain associated with Stage IV cancer. So we are the new owners of a Yorkie (Right at 3-years old). Wife is picking her up now.

I'm skeptical that the dog isn't trained well, but we will see.

Goodness. I haven't had a dog since I was in high school. Oh god what have we done.

Congrats, AB! I’m sure you’ll love your new roommate and walking partner.

My parents have a one year-old Yorkie. Cute as hell, but hell on wheels. Destroys everything in its path and resists all efforts at training.

So, good luck with that!

You said her so am guessing you can't change the dog's name to Dwight. Wonder how many of the breed were named Dwight in the late 90s/early 2000s

Next door neighbors have a Yorkie. Super affectionate dog, but when she stole a chicken wing and I ripped it out of her mouth, I've never in my life seen a dog viciously attack anyone like that. Killer pitbulls have nothing on that 6 pounds of fury. Fortunately, of the 20 or so bites she delivered, none broke skin. I wish I had a video, because it was damn impressive and hilarious, snarling and shrieking the whole time. The owner was horrified, but within 2 minutes, the dog was peacefully sleeping on my lap. They leave her out in their front yard all the time, which is great, because my daughter will run outside to play with her. She loves my daughter, but she has attacked her numerous times, but she is too small to hurt a kid, so it's just funny. I don't know if it's the breed, or if their dog is just crazy, but if you approach her from the wrong angle, she turns into the Tasmanian Devil.

And Yorkies only need short walks.

Kind of an entry-level dog.

Enjoy!

I'm not sure this dog has ever been on a walk. I've leashed up a few times since Monday, and we never get out of sight of our house. I've made her go a few different directions to get some kind of activity in, but once we get to a certain point she just seizes up. I picked her up and walked her a bit further then put her back down, but she just wanted to go back home. So that's weird, but I think it's entirely possible the grandmother never took her on actual walks.

ETA: Gonna drive to a park tonight and walk with the house not in sight.

It's amazing how much benefit young dogs get from exercise. My parents never should have gotten a puppy (but, that's another story), since they are both in their 80s. So, their Yorkie gets very limited walks. When I was there in July for my mother's surgery, I was bored stiff most of the time, so I took the dog out for walks three times a day. The dog loved it, and my parents were very happy with how much his nervous energy got burned off.

Now, whenever I speak to my folks on the phone, my mother tells me Jake (the pup) needs me to come visit again.

From what you've mentioned previously, sounds like visiting the pup is the better end of the trip.

Not about dogs, but this ties to AB's post. The son of my good friend owns a pot-belly pig. He's had it about 7 years and it is remarkably tame and friendly. If you are having a beer, it will come up to you and basically demand some beer. So my friend or his son pour him one in his bowl. The pig weighs more than I do, so I'm pretty sure having one beer isn't going to harm him - he's been drinking beer his whole life.

They give Kobe cows sake. Can't hurt, only a more delicious product in the end.
