Oh god I hate this ...

I don't think he's wrong. Say 80% of people quick pick and 20% use their own numbers; those 20% of tickets are subject to human tendencies. Like, if we get 100 people each in 100 different rooms and ask each person to pick 5 numbers, the totals won't just be random distribution of the number range, there will be some more common and some less common numbers and those will be somewhat predictable at some point. Someone on twitter pointed out 5 of the 6 numbers are calendar numbers which is probably the best possible support for his overly-mocked comment.

(This assumes the lottery if truly randomly generating numbers and not normalizing based on what people are self-selecting.)

To play devil's advocate, I think what Johnnie is saying is that you don't get the whole 1.5 billion. Taxes and shit.

True, but you also don't win if you don't play. Food for thought? I say yes.

Anyone in? I put $10 in friday. Hit three numbers, good for $10 back, so I let it ride!

I'm thinking about it. I never play. What is it, 2$ a ticket so you can just pay 10$ and spin the wheel o randoms 5 times?

Had some family buy me $10 worth of tickets in Michigan. If I'm being honest and I really do mean this, best case scenario for me personally is my father-in-law winning since I know he'll take care of us to the point we won't have to work again, but I still don't have to deal with all of the bullshit that surrounds winning a billion and a half dollars.

I'm in with neighbors for $20 each household. Bought in NY on Friday and got my money back as did a few other neighbors here in CO so we all rolled that into tonight plus an additional $20 since we added a couple more houses on the block to the pool.

Yes, too. I usually start buying tickets if the jackpot exceeds $350 million or so.

Drove 30 min down to the California lotto store literally 50 steps from NV State line. Lotteries are illegal here in the gambling Mecca. Human line was ~1,000 people and wrapped twice around building then halfway behind outlet mall on NV side. A two-State line likely a 2.5-3hr wait. I declined. I have plenty of opportunities to lose $20 here and at least i can get a craft beer for my trouble.

All this lotto talk reminds me of a funny story about my grandfather. He used to play the Ohio lotto jackpot game somewhat religiously for as I long as I could have remembered. He died in 2004; one day not too many years before that what was then called the Super Lotto jackpot was up to some significant number that I have forgotten so I asked him if he had his ticket for the drawing. He told me he quit playing. When I asked why he said he didn't like that they changed the odds and made them worse. I responded by saying "you mean to tell me you were playing because the odds where in your favor* before this?!?!"

*what changed was in 2000 or so, I think, they upped the numbers from 6/47 to 6/49 with a bonus ball.

Just came back from the grocery store, and I asked the cashier if it's been busy today. She laughed and said it's the craziest day they've had in months.

Yeah, I still want to win.

But, I can imagine that people come out of the woodwork asking you to fund their real or imagined needs. Kind of like the "friends" and family of newly rich pro athletes, I suppose.

I'll try to conceal my identity as a new billionaire from everybody except you guys.

The essential thing is being able to maintain anonymity. Any day dreaming has to start with a plan to do that.

I think you’d really have to commit to moving somewhere else after winning. Whether that’s moving to Monaco or Malibu, you’d have enough money.

That's the stuff that makes you realize you'll never win. 1-36 with 5 balls is not the same stratosphere of odds as 1-70 with 6 balls. I remember occasionally hitting two on a card and thinking you weren't that far off. I'm pretty much a lightning strikes one play lotto gambler and I can't remember the last time I bought one that actually hit a number.

I hit three numbers on one line to win $10 friday. Was pretty amazed by that, even.
