Just can't throw a bunch of guys together. Canada, who really cares, tried this and lost the last-chance qualifier to the Czechs. Canada, despite all their talent, hasn't been to the Olympics since 2000.

I watched a lot of that game last night. The Aussies were just on fire, Patty Mills in particular, but not just him. I doubt they can play any better, but clearly the US isn't all there yet. Like said above, it takes time to turn guys like Beal, Lillard, and Durant into teammates who are comfortable with the offense not flowing through them. Particularly Beal and Lillard.

Oh course, were not talking about contending. Can't even get to a 12 team tournament. Losing to like Venezuela or Czechs.

Is it because he's walking through that door for South Africa?

To correct myself, Booker is the Phoenix guard going to Tokyo, not Chris Paul. Management regrets the error. They still don't need a "true" point guard.

I sort of like that we can't just roll the ball out there anymore.

Kind of like how the US WNT can't just lace up their cleats and walk through every team in a given tournament until the semis anymore.

TCM is showing a series of films based on footage from Summer Olympics. They’re currently showing something from 1976 (and are skipping 1980 and going right to 1984). I watched a bit of the 1972 film, which was very stylized and was apparently made by combining work from 8 different filmmakers. Here is the “strongest” portion. The director said she had no interest in sports but was interested In obsessions.

I love the ending.

I stopped watching before the massacre but based on the description of the film and the opening narration it was covered.

The film Tokyo Olympiad about the previous Tokyo Olympics (1964) is considered a masterpiece of documentary filmmaking. There’s even a Criterion Collection version.

That was really cool. Told a whole story without any words, and without really showing it as a competition.

I couldn't help thinking that all the competitors just look like they must have the worst BO ever. And it was hilarious watching 5 soldiers carry the weights off the stage. Primarily because it took 5 soldiers, but why didn't they just take the plates off the bar? And I couldn't help thinking that Germany clearly wasn't unionized yet, think of all the jobs they lost out on by having the military provide free labor to take apart the Olympic venues after the event.

Curious to see what the ratings will be in the US. Between the worst time difference for US tv, the shift to watching streaming content, the lack of fans, and I would say the lack of hype (at least from my perspective, if it weren't for Women's soccer, I would have forgotten about the Olympics). I'm planning on recording the US Women's soccer games, but other than that, I don't think I'm going to watch anything else. My son is pretty sports obsessed and my daughter loves playing sports, but I don't think they have any interest, other than my daughter watching the USWNT. When I was a kid, I was obsessed with the Olympics and watched as much as possible, and I feel like most people watched a fair amount, but do kids today care about the Olympics?

My hot take is that the Winter Olympics are much more interesting than the Summer Olympics for the most part. Not sure what the lamest Winter Olympic sport is, but whatever it is, it's 10x more interesting than yachting, kayaking, equestrian and a whole bunch other dead weight Summer Olympic "sports".

I actually think you're both onto something. It's like an amusement park that has too many rides... You have to be selective for the summer Olympics.

Another issue is the US hasn't hosted the summer games since Atlanta. When you pull a huge chunk of the collective conscious into hosting the games, it's the type of thing that can stick with an entire generation of prospective fans. (Last time we hosted the winter games was in 2002 in SLC.)

I dunno... I'm a mark for the Olympics... My wife is pretty much a wall-to-wall beginning with the opening ceremonies all the way to close. I grew up that way too, so... We'll be dialed in to as much as possible.

Haters. People like swimming way too much. Same with gymnastics. Us centric teams sports in summer and good ol fashioned patriotism. I'm all in. Especially when you get to some some different stuff you don't think about but every four years. And Track. Don't get no more athletic than track.

How about hot take... extreme winter sports better than winter Olympics anyway.

Since I've had DVR I watched at least 80% of the prime time coverage since Beijing. And I know it's a horrendously evil enterprise; Molly Lambert has a fantastic takedown in Defector today, none of which I disagree with. Is that going to change my viewing habits? No, sorry. I'm just as big a mark for sports as the next guy.

I'm frankly sickened by the 17th game this year, and I've said on multiple occasions that the NFL is going to lose some of my attention. Yet I'll be there some early November Thursday night watching two rando teams, because I'm a complete schnook.

I've always preferred the Winter Olympics, I'd still watch a decent amount, definitely hockey, skiing, a bit of luge/bobsled, and every second of curling (not joking, I fucking love curling). Going with your amusement park analogy, half the events in the Summer games are It's a Small World. Swimming and track and field are just the most boring events to watch. My son runs track and cross country, and he won't even watch track events. The 100 is exciting, but anything longer than that... I used to enjoy the human drama element, but I think I either got jaded, or it's the same damned thing every time. Maybe having an Olympics every 2 years took something away from the specialness of the event, too. I used to love the opening and closing ceremonies, but they bore me now, too. And yes, I hear how much I've become a crotchety old man.
