I'm Trump Jr. in that scenario since I've seen Dave Matthews Band 29 times.

Speaking of, I saw Ryley Walker (1) is/was a huge DMB fan and (2) did a full remake of the Lillywhites. Have you listened and is it worth it knowing I really, really liked the Lillywhites and how good they were is why I stopped listening to the subsequent albums?
Re: Trump Admin Meltdown Thread Part IV - Welcome to Stupid Watergate
I didn't listen to the whole thing, but IIRC, they were completely different interpretations. Good chance I'm not recalling correctly, though.

All this shows me is that the rules literally don't matter and the Constitution is a suggestion. Kinda like when commanders in the military just say "no" in abiding by rules and guidance because they don't like it and no one checks them.

Re: Trump Admin Meltdown Thread Part IV - Welcome to Stupid Watergate
There's a court case going on right now over emoluments.
What I think people don't fully grasp is that we've never actually had such an outright crime syndicate set up shop in the WH. There's no precedent for trying to enforce the emoluments clause.
The man is, literally, a crook. His "genius" has always been "yeah... so sue/arrest me" and either no one has really ever tried, or he just waits for people to move on to the next scandal.
Because there's really no way he's not brazenly violating constitutional law here. It's not subtle.

Re: Trump Admin Meltdown Thread Part IV - Welcome to Stupid Watergate
Isn't that the point? "The cover-up is worse than the crime" is true both legally and in the terms of perception. What this does is shape the narrative to the dumbfuck undecideds; can it really be that bad if they're all admitting it? Do the crime, make no effort to cover it up and if anything celebrate it and you dilute the perceived severity of the crime.

Only the best people...Later, after Trump’s lawyer and Republicans distanced themselves from Mulvaney, the White House scrambled to walk back his comments, issuing an official statement blaming the media for misconstruing his words “to advance a biased and political witch hunt against President Trump.”
“Let me be clear,” Mulvaney’s written statement said, “there was absolutely no quid pro quo between Ukrainian military aid and any investigation into the 2016 election. There was never any connection between the funds and the Ukrainians doing anything with the server … there was never any condition on the flow of the aid related to the matter of the DNC server.”

On the plus side, this is about the first time he has ever course corrected and done the right thing. Even if he was pressured by Republicans, but maybe that is even better, because he sure as fuck won't change, it'll take external threats to make him take the ethical route. I've been hoping the timing of his Syria pullout and impeachment inquiry might be enough to tip a couple GOP Senators. Many are vocally attacking his move, and do infuriate the GOP right as the indefensible impeachable events are put to hearings, maybe one Senator will grow a pair and stop defending him. I do think if one or two start to take a stand, more will follow. Once they lose the majority, I think most of the rest will crumble to avoid being on the wrong side of history. Nobody wants to be the asshole who defended Trump when it's clear he will be impeached. [all wishful thinking, I know, but laying out the best case scenario].

I'll believe that when I see it. The next time the GOP under this leadership does anything other than bowing to cowardice would be their first.
My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Number 45 is Paul Konerko with 439.
Re: Trump Admin Meltdown Thread Part IV - Welcome to Stupid Watergate
I was gonna say literally the exact same thing. That said, I think it's fair to say this is by the far the closest the GOP has come from breaking away from Trump even if I doubt it's ever going to get to the point where they consider removing him since doing so basically ensures losing the election next year.
The calculus changes if a) removing Trump IMPROVES the chances of the GOP winning the presidential election next year or b) if it becomes clear they're going to lose either way and removing him improves the chances of retaining the Senate and avoiding a washout in the House.
Scenario B is more likely than A, in case it's not clear, but neither is likely. Soul searching is not something the modern GOP is at all capable of.

Yeah, this only has him out of office if the polling gets so bad that they are in complete disaster recovery mode. And the reason it won't get to the point is mainly because of what happened in 2016. Everyone was convinced it was going to be a debacle, and the Fucking Moron pulled a doodoo rabbit out of his ass (to his own surprise.)

For those who won't read, the article makes my point by comparing Trump to Joe Pesci's character in Casino. The mob bosses all tolerated his erratic behavior and extreme violence, because he made them money. Once the risk was too high, they whacked him. My fear is that after backing thousands of crimes, missteps, catastrophic ethics violations, pissing on all norms and rules, how can they now say they were wrong and Trump went too far? I think Dems need to give Republicans a soft out, a way they can impeach and not admit to being wrong about Trump.

That guy was apparently one of the few people who had figured it out early doors that McConnell was going to stonewall the Garland nomination, too, so he may be plugged in.

Re: Trump Admin Meltdown Thread Part IV - Welcome to Stupid Watergate
I have to find my source, but on a much nerdier/procedural front:
McConnell would have to go against impeachment precedent to seize control of the proceedings and hold a perfunctory hearing in the Senate. The established protocol is that IMMEDIATELY after the House votes for impeachment, Chief Justice Roberts is sworn to lead the hearing process.
I'll find the article, but it throws a huge wrinkle into things.

Re: Trump Admin Meltdown Thread Part IV - Welcome to Stupid Watergate
That's probably the reason for McConnell to walk back his comments. Say what you will about Roberts, but he won't let the process turn into an un-democratic farce, not his part of it at least. It will still be mostly a comical farce, but they'll have to have the trial and the Senate Republicans will turn it into an excuse to excoriate the House Dems for impeaching.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2019 12:08 pm I have to find my source, but on a much nerdier/procedural front:
