Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
It seems dumb to me. Too much time has passed to do playoffs, now. Before you know it, it’ll be time for camp to open for next season.

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
San Jose has been eliminated since that dude in Wuhan decided to buy some bat, so not surprised to hear you say that, but the rest of us would like to see the playoffs. (The NHL has already said delaying the start of next season isn't a deal breaker. If they can finish the playoffs by the middle of September, take a six week break, then the regular season can start around the middle of November and the 2021 playoffs can start around the beginning of May. They could (and maybe should) knock the regular season next year down to about 70-72 games as well.)

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
Well, it might actually help the non-playoff teams next season to do this, now. I imagine the players on some playoff teams will have some pretty dead legs come next April.
And, fwiw, being a hockey fan, I generally enjoy the playoffs even when my team isn’t playing.

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
Everyone is going to get a 3.5 month break before the playoffs. Most teams will get at least another 2 months off and that’s even if they “rush” to start 20/21. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to try and do the playoffs over the summer especially if MLB implodes as it’s looking like. NHL/NBA might be the only game in town for awhile.

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
I think season length and/or starting and ending months of seasons are the things we're going to see change among sports that do try to start back up. We can't think of the NHL as starting in mid-September if they try this.

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
NBA has already discussed moving to December-June (regular season) permanently starting with 20/21.
My understanding of NHL finances is that they might not even want to start 20/21 until fans can attend even if that’s January 2021.

Las Vegas seems like an obvious choice for one of the hub cities given the number of hotels there, right? Maybe Toronto or Chicago for the other one to space things out geographically. (It’s been many years since I’ve been to Toronto but Chicago certainly has plenty of hotels.)
Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
NHL will face a lot of pressure from the fans and players to have one of the hubs in Canada, so I'd bet on Las Vegas and Edmonton, both of which are new arenas. Two buildings on the west coast will help a lot for spacing games out for TV purposes as well since they can start a Western Conference game at 7:30 p.m. local time.Joe K wrote: ↑Wed May 27, 2020 9:23 am Las Vegas seems like an obvious choice for one of the hub cities given the number of hotels there, right? That'll be interesting. People complain about ice conditions in STL and Dallas during the playoffs. Be fun to try and keep that rink up when it's 110 outside. Probably helps that you don't have fans going in and out but still. Multiple games and trying to get that ice right is going to be difficult.brian wrote: ↑Wed May 27, 2020 9:27 amNHL will face a lot of pressure from the fans and players to have one of the hubs in Canada, so I'd bet on Las Vegas and Edmonton, both of which are new arenas. Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
My money is on Vegas and one other in the East, most likely in the US. I think the when and where hasn't been answered yet because the NHL desperately wants at least one Canadian city, likely Toronto. But, if the border is closed as it is currently, it'll have to be Chicago, Minneapolis or Columbus.

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
The ice was pristine during the SCF two years ago in June and that was with 18,000 people in the building. In an empty building, it won't be an issue at all. (The arena and ice-making equipment being completely new and using best possible technology helps.)BSF21 wrote: ↑Wed May 27, 2020 9:56 amThat'll be interesting. Certainly not saying it can't be, but one game every other day on the surface helps. If they're trying to play multiple games on back to back to back days, it could pose issues.brian wrote: ↑Wed May 27, 2020 10:05 amThe ice was pristine during the SCF two years ago in June and that was with 18,000 people in the building. But yes, it being brand new doesn't hurt.

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
That's fair. But the NHL will likely have their best ice techs on site at the two arenas as well (as they would for the Cup Finals).

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
With no fans in attendance to complain about conditions, they can keep the temperature in the arena really cold to keep the ice conditions great.BSF21 wrote: ↑Wed May 27, 2020 9:56 amThat'll be interesting. For whatever it's worth, Yzerman announces Wings will keep Jeff Blashill for the final season of his contract.

Penny Vinik filed for divorce from Jeff yesterday. Could be catastrophic for the Lightning, Water Street (the $2B renovation ongoing near the arena), and Tampa in general.

Quite the firing spree in Buffalo. Looks like the GoT red wedding episode up there.
The Athletic wrote:While (fired GM Jason) Botterill was the marquee name in the bloodletting, he was just the start. Hardly a soul was saved as the Pegulas fired both of the assistant GMs, all of the minor-league coaching staff, all the scouting directors, all the scouts and player development coaches.
(New GM Kevyn) Adams made the phone calls announcing the firings, sources said. What a first day.
The Pegulas, who have overseen a nine-year playoff drought, have burned their hockey operations almost to the ground. Among the few people left are Adams, coach Ralph Krueger and the Pegulas themselves...
...The Pegulas are on their fourth GM and sixth coach since February 2013.

That organization is a tire fire. The one redeeming quality is Krueger, who has management experience (in soccer). I suppose having Eichel and Dahlin is good too.

I wonder how much the Bolts (and all other Atlantic teams) benefit by being in a division with Detroit, Ottawa, and Buffalo.

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
Interesting point in today's daily espn podcast. A number of hockey players time their family plans for the offseason. A few players may have kids right as the training camp and tournament kicks up. Harder for hockey as some of these folks are intentional/cross borders and will either miss the birth or get quarantined for part of the return to play.

It's almost like shitty ownership is often a reason why pro sports franchises stink. Guess Pegula should be added to the list of Dolan, Sarver, Haslem, Snyder, etc.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Wed Jun 17, 2020 5:38 am That organization is a tire fire. I had no idea Jeremy Roenick wasn't in the HoF. I just assumed he was. Like if you'd given me 40 players who were active while I've been a fan and said check off the HoFers on this list, I wouldn't have even debated him.
Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
I'm not sure if his stats merit inclusion, but in any case, I think he loses votes because of the Curt Schilling Clause, also known as the "I'm not voting or that asshole" clause.

This was yesterday.
A loser of the qualifying round will receive a 1st overall pick. There will be a re-draw, each loser of the qualifying round has a 12.5% chance at it
8) Buffalo
7) NJ
6) Anaheim
5) Ottawa - Own pick
4) Detroit
3) Ottawa - via SJ
2) Los Angeles
1) placeholder team
Ottawa is just cursed, they had 2nd and 3rd chances, now picks are 3 and 5. Detroit had best chance and could get neither of the first 3 picks.

I understand that if they can't complete the play in round, then the next lowest 8 team (reg season points %) all have a 12.5% chance.
