That's awesome! I was at Game 7 in 2001. Incredible experience, one of my top 3 in-person sports experiences.
Yeah, let me follow up that for your sake, I hope the Stros win tonight. Both J-Hip and I were at the WS clincher in '08, and the best way I can describe it is 47,000 people simultaneously climaxing.

Not saying there isn't Trump fans in Houston, just saying Houston is a pretty "blue" city, even by relative Texas standards. As far as the number of progressives among big cities in Texas, it's 1) Austin, 2) Houston and whatever #3 is isn't especially close.
But even the wealthier suburbs here are probably split 60-40 in favor of Trump, and that's being generous.

DC is probably 80 percent Dems, the suburbs have their pockets of red, but it's still MD, one of the bluest states in the Union. Shows you how delusional he is that he didn't expect that kind of response.

Fucking moron.

I'm not going to pop off like I'm some huge Nats fans. I've been a casual follower for years, and when they started shitting the bed in the playoffs, I started tuning them out. I had enough sports grief to deal with the Caps and MI, wasn't going to truly take another into my heart like that.

But I'll say this: When the Nats went up 2-0, a lot of folks here started losing their shit. And I said to my wife, "these people are playing into a collective conscious that is NOT healthy for the team. They haven't won jack shit yet."

That same day, we were watching the news and someone said something like: Don't want to jinx things, but I'm told there are initial plans for a parade underway.

I mean, FFS.

I still think they are capable. They are throwing Stras tonight and they are clearly more comfortable in their bubble on the road. But the Nats were the WC team, playing by most accounts the best team in baseball.

Getting cocky for a franchise that hasn't done shit isn't all that wise.

I hope Strasburg isn't pitching tonight because that would be bad for his start tomorrow

(I joke because the multiple uses of tonight in this thread made me check my DTV guide to make sure that I wasn't losing my shit)

though if there was a game tonight it'd have a real chance of kicking MNF's ass on the TV ratings front

I'd put money on that against you. Bad football games have a long tradition of outdrawing viewers over important baseball games.

1) A lot of people tune into MNF because it's what they've done their entire adult lives. Hell, I stopped caring about the NFL 15-20 years ago and I'd still meet friends out on Monday's for a spell.

2) This series has two teams without a national fan base, which automatically suppresses the ratings.

Are there even national fanbases anymore? Seems everything is regional now. Even last year Red Sox Dodgers rating were terrible.

The World Series is no longer an event, like the Super Bowl is. Regional tv deals are making a killing with 162 game content while national tv deals ESPN and Fox are hurting.

Yankees, Cubs, Red Sox and Dodgers definitely have national fan bases. Could make a case for the SF Giants and the Braves, too. Giants because they are a franchise that started in NY (like the Dodgers), Braves because they benefited from a national cable channel, just like the Cubs (Turner for the Braves, WGN for the Cubs.)

Also, no other sport has a finals that is an "event" other than the Super Bowl. There's nothing in American sports that comes in a tiny bit close. When you combine "Football is King" with the ability to focus everyone's attention on one 4.5 hour block, it dwarfs everything... not just MLB.

The Super Bowl has long-since been a never-ending experiment in bloatware.

The most bang for your buck is the Final Four, IMO.

But it's still not as bad as the Super Bowl, where there's a 90% chance the game is going to be garbage, and nearly 100% chance a team in the game had already beaten their toughest opponent.

Chiefs-Packers drew 16M to 10M for Game 5. The last time the Steelers were on MNF (against the Bengals) the game drew 10.5M.

Throw is on purpose.

Strasburg at 97 pitches has to be back out there, right? Maybe Davey didn’t want to have to deal with the pen?

I can't imagine the takes on Verlander's 0-6 (7 GS) with a 5.68 ERA career line in the World Series if this were a decade or so ago.

On a similar vein.

I posted an NFL SwampCrash question a few years back noting that 8 teams won the treble, i.e. win the World Series, and have a dude win MVP and Cy Young all in the same year. If the Astros win tonight, they have a chance at the quadruple, with Bregman a possible MVP, Cole the likely Cy, and Alvarez as the likely ROY.
My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Number 45 is Paul Konerko with 439.

Dueling worst case scenarios with Scherzer pulling a 2003 David Wells or Greinke having an implosion. I care more about neither of those happening than the outcome itself.
