Jeeves Still Watches VHS (Bluray purchasing)

I'm looking to buy a bluray player, mostly for streaming Netflix, WiFi access for my TV (can't imagine why I'd need that other than Netflix), and to replace my DVD player which doesn't have an HDMI jack, and my TV doesn't have the old school 3-prong DVD hookup, whatever those are called. I'm not one to buy movies, so I don't really care about the bluray capabilities itself. Is there anything I need to look for or avoid, or just basically get anything with WiFi capabilities and HDMI jacks, which they all seem to have both anyways. Several advertise "Netflix ready" or "Pandora ready," but wouldn't every WiFi player be Netflix and Pandora ready? Is that just marketing, or is there really something needed to be "Netflix ready?" Because if not, there is no reason for me to spend more than $70, because I don't need a high quality bluray player, because I'll probably play 1 bluray disk a year, and I have no speakers beyond the pitiful ones built into the TV, so fuck it, right?

Netflix ready means it has an app preinstalled and all you have to do is authorize the player. I assume it's same for pandora.

I have a wired one and wish it was wifi. So long as it has that you're golden. Cheap works.

I can't speak for the newest models, but the blu ray players I've seen have the additional apps hard coded into the system. It's not like you have an open droid platform where you can add apps at will.

That said, I'm sure there's models getting closer to just that.

I'd make sure that it plays standard DVDs (most BR players do but not all), CDs, burned/copied DVDs (as with DVDShrink), MP3s, etc, particularly if you are hooking this thing up to a stereo of some sort.

The one I got (it was around $75) had netflix pre-installed, and you could get a small range of other ones via download at the time I hooked it up initially. Haven't checked to see if they expanded, but it was an off-brand streaming service and a couple of other things I didn't pay much attention to.

It's not as functional as the PS3, but it plays movies and Netflix, so was great for the second TV.

Damn, that was a fantastic deal, too.
