This is a pet peeve... but that’s a grown ass woman not a girl.
I know what you're getting at - I one told my students that once someone turned 18, you couldn't call them a girl.
but you see, I turn 56 in a few days, and anyone under 30 seems like a boy or a girl to me, so mea culpa, sorry if I offended you.
Not as bad as gal.

We’ve had this talk, right? Boy = girl, man = woman, but there’s no proper equivalent for guy because gal is stupid and faux cowboy.

It's DSafetyGuy and DSafetyGirl. Simmons used to (and may still) go with Sports Guy and Sports Gal.
I think I have appropriately illustrated how horrible "gal" is.

Its an external issue, not internal. I can call my wife a girl, I can't call a coworker 10 years younger than my wife a girl no matter how casual the conversation is.

I think that adult males need to phase it out of their vocabulary for non children. I wasn't trying to be an asshole, but I think there should be an active effort and "I'm 56" isn't a good excuse. I've called out co-workers and friends and even myself mid-talk to a group of assembled miners. So I don't have much issue calling out an internet friend.

wlu_lax6: "Contradict yourself much???"
?? I let it slip and corrected myself immediately. It was along the lines of "If you have questions, the girls in the office...excuse me, the ladies in the office...have all the information as well." And it was several years ago and I don't recall making the mistake a whole bunch but I'm sure I have as well. I just try to be aware of it is all.

(Or was that a miner/minor joke?)
I've learned to not even use ladies in the workplace. Always use names, you get a lot more respect. "If you have any questions, Annette and Lauren can help you get the information". Especially if Annette and Lauren can hear you.
The worse is "these guys". My lead will look at three women in a meeting and say "these guys are in charge of that".

I'd agree, but it was a location where I didn't know all of their names.

I say "guys" every now and then, and catch myself.
I once asked my soccer team if it bugged them and they just shrugged. "C'mon guys!" didn't really register.
I know it's different in the workplace and I don't remember the last time it happened in this setting. But I don't think it's perceived to be a truly offensive turn of phrase.

I agree with your point, just surprised at how strongly you feel about it. And I go to client's worksites and teach a course called Respect in the Workplace about being more aware of shit like this. Eh, as I typed this, I switched "girls" to a demeaning tone in my head, and I get it. I wasn't thinking of it in that tone at first.

It's probably irrational but pet peeves are sometimes. Pruitt certainly didn't mean it in any demeaning way (and I should have been more clear about that initially), which is the way that I think it comes across in a professional setting.

Not an excuse, a joke.
I did apologize for offending you.
You did, I was just trying to explain myself a bit, and I didn't do a very good job at all!
