Sorry for leaving last year's thread on a cliff-hanger when I kind of ran into a creative wall and put it aside. Fortunately, I've enlisted George Lucas to tell us how the last colony's story played out:

RimWorld is a computer game in which you manage a group of stranded castaways on a remote planet, working to establish a sustainable settlement in the face of threats from starvation, natural disasters, wildlife, hostile natives, pirates, etc.

What makes RimWorld different is that unlike most other games, in which you have direct control over your characters, your settlers in RimWorld have minds of their own, and your planning must take into account their strengths, weaknesses, and personality quirks. RimWorld characters can develop rivalries, fight, fall in love, become drug addicts, have nervous breakdowns, and all manner of other things. All these details make it as much of an emergent storytelling generator as of a game.

So, what I'll be doing is playing through some sessions of the game, using characters based on Swampers to make it interesting, and post updates and screenshots here as things play out.

As mentioned in the other thread, the game just had a big update along with a new expansion called Royalty. I haven't read much on it myself and don't really know what to expect, but maybe that will just make it more interesting.

First poll is up to select the biome for our next colony. After that we'll do the colony pet, etc. and proceed with the next steps.

tennbengal was a child genius who graduated from college at an early age, but then ran afoul of the authorities after attempting to genetically modify himself to be immortal. He was granted a conditional release and joined the military, where he became a combat engineer on space ships. This gave him a good range of skills with construction, firearms, and medicine. He has no social skills, but is eager to learn. One particular mission left him with an intense fear of plants for unspecified reasons, so he refuses to participate in farming activities. He is mentally tough and has no need to experience the outdoors or sunlight.


govmentchedda was raised by pirates and then grew up to become captain of his own ship. Though deprived of a formal education, his life experience has given him a good set of practical skills including crafting, negotiatiing, and killing people. He is a nice guy but is lazy.


Pruitt grew up in a cave on a tundra planet before being adopted by a group of traveling entertainers who later abandoned him. He went on to become a successful producer of sitcoms while hoping to one day reunite with his former adoptive family. His success went to his head, however, and he refuses to haul items, clean, or interact with sick people. He is described as "beautiful, with an exotic-yet-familiar facial structure and an arresting gaze."


bfj was born as the product of an illicit love affair and raised by nuns in a convent. Growing up he developed a love of sculpture and consequently has high skills in both artistry and mining. Exceptionally stubborn, he refuses to engage in violence, manual labor, or cooking. Additionally, he will fly into a jealous rage if he finds that his living quarters are less lavish than someone else's.


P.D.X. was born to a tribe of ascetics who wandered the desert in search of a psychedelic substance that would unlock the secrets of the universe, which sounds like an elaborate way to say "meth heads." As an adult he traveled the universe looking for archaeological sites and attempting to decipher ancient coding languages. He is a fast learner with a particular interest in cooking, but has a tendency to rub people the wrong way with his abrasive demeanor.

Yes, I got it. Haven't actually played it yet, so I'll be going in blind, but maybe that will only make it more fun.

When I fired up the game to test, a bunch of stuff was broken or wonky due to the update and the various mods I have installed, so hopefully can work things out over the weekend.

Also it's funny that so far no one thinks the prima donna artist who refuses to do menial labor will be the first to die in a crisis situation.
