Finally, I jump to a conclusion that someone/something died and I can feel happy without guilt. That guy has been unwatchable for 20 years, how has he stayed on the air? I wouldn't be surprised to find out i a few years that he has dementia. He has been saying some nutty stuff, even nuttier than normal for him.

I've interacted with him around a dozen times over the years, going back to the 90s.

He's a "nice guy" off air, and his schtik is absolutely how he talks to people in "real" life.* We hosted a roundtable of journalists from time to time and he always livened things up. Unlike Howard Fineman, who is absolutely of the same era, Matthews was someone that didn't take himself too seriously.

That said, I was talking to my wife about this last night: Dude was 74. You can keep up that energy and blowhard-take for only so long. Even if it's not dementia, his routine relies on being on top of your game and it was becoming obvious 5 years ago that he wasn't keeping it together.

Because one thing I found over the past couple of years - I just can't stand the sound of Matthews' voice or his whole "wise detached political guy" persona.

I haven't watched his show in years, but I used to back during the Clinton impeachment, and the post-911 years.

I remember he used to show up on the McLaughlin Group, many many years ago.

CRAZY loud, always. The first time I called and got him, I did the old timey sitcom thing of pulling the phone comically far from ear.

Less so in person, but he was always "on."
