The super sweaty guy (Rick Zumwalt) was a Las Vegas corrections officer in real life until his untimely death (and a real arm-wrestling champion). He was also supposedly a really, really nice guy IRL.

For some reason the mother's medical condition or prognosis is undisclosed throughout the movie, but she's awaiting some kind of a procedure at this hospital by the way. That's not a spoiler -- you would just have to guess otherwise.
